We'll probably see a lot of that sort of thing in the coming months as the government desperately tries to justify the NSA surveillance kerfluffle.

Malaysia declares emergency as Indonesia smoke pollution thickens

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia declared a state of emergency in two parts of the southern state of Johor on Sunday, as smoke from land-clearing fires in Indonesia pushed air pollution above the level considered hazardous.

The illegal burning of forests and other land on Indonesia's Sumatra island, to the west of peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, to clear space for palm oil plantations is a chronic problem during the June-September dry season.

The "haze" caused by fires in Riau province on Sumatra has also shrouded neighboring Singapore but air quality in the city state improved over the weekend after reaching hazardous levels.

"Prime Minister Najib Razak has agreed to declare emergency status in Muar and Ledang with immediate effect," Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Minister G. Palanivel said in a Facebook post.

Palanivel said the air pollution index in the two districts had exceeded 750. A reading above 300 indicates that air pollution is hazardous.

Domestic media quoted the minister as saying cloud seeding would be carried out in the affected areas.

All 211 schools in the area are to be closed until further notice, residents have been advised to stay indoors and face masks have been distributed, Khaled Nordin, chief minister of the state, said, also via posts on Facebook.

Schools have been ordered shut in the neighboring state of Malacca, where pollution has also reached hazardous levels. Schools were also ordered to close in one district in Pahang state.

All domestic airports managed by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) are operating as usual despite the haze, the national news agency quoted the airport operator as saying.

The current visibility level of 1 km was still safe, but runways would have to close if visibility fell under 300 m, it quoted Malaysian airports official Azmi Murad as saying.

Indonesian officials have deflected blame by suggesting companies based in Malaysia and Singapore may be partly responsible. Malaysia-listed Sime Darby and Singapore's Wilmar Group both deny the charge.

Mr. Snowden has left the building.

This saga has taken on the trappings of a Cold War spy story. Will he end up in Cuba? Iceland? Hanging out with Julian Assange?

Wasn't it just a day or so ago that the Hong Kong police announced Snowden was being held by them in protective custody at an unspecfied location? Yet he somehow manages to board a commercial Aeroflot flight for Russia? As Spock would say, "fascinating."

AP chose the correct word for this article. Bomb disposal is an ART, there is no technicality behind it other than indoctrinating every EOD Engineer that every mission grants a 33% chance to meet your maker (the other 66% being either you make it out in one piece or many).

However, with the rise of terrorists being able to construct complex devices making the Boston bombs look like children's art, bomb disposal teams are running out of super-patient people in this age of instant/fast services.

And here is to all the wirecutter-wielding saints who risk their lives to keep the rest of the force safe.

I just wish Obama isn't agreeing with Fox News on this one.

I don't know what is sadder, the fact that a few months ago I thought the American Government was divided and entirely dysfunctional, or now when I realised that they really can be united if it comes to having power over the population. The power to know everything about the people and to have the legal right to hide the fact that you are spying on them.

You know, at least the KGB were honest.

You don't have hardware stores where you live? I would think respirators would be available in the same shelf space as hammers and paintbrushes.

Just so you know, I'm a clerk turn rifleman (no basic military training, I haven't even fired the new gun SAR21 issued to my unit yet) so I have no idea what you mean.
Also, since my unit is pretty much the lowest tiers of the army, I'm not even sure if chemical gear is in our inventory...

One last thing... I forgot to check the hardware store but I don't recall seeing that there. We are facing a face mask shortage here at the moment

Yeah, I went and looked it up. So it seems you have no choice but to import it yourself. Guess that's the issue with being an island, people can't just send in masks by the truckload and you don't get to make your own either.

I remember as a child back in Taiwan that cotton face masks are items you just keep in your motorbike/moped storage with your helmet, but I guess if the smog gets really serious that wouldn't be enough.

Next stop Ecuador?

Quote:
On Twitter, Ricardo Patiño Aroca, the foreign minister for Ecuador, posted that Mr. Snowden had submitted a request for asylum.

Earlier on Sunday, the Ecuadorian ambassador arrived at the airport in Moscow and told reporters that he would be meeting with Mr. Snowden.

They're completely united in the worst possible ways. That's why the two party system has become a sham. They're inoperable on the 'public' issues and they are unified in the behind the scenes corrupt, villainous dealings.

hmm dunno, the point of a politician is doing the best he can for the country, and it doesn't necessarly goes with doing the best for people. As much as I hate prism, it is indeed the best system to protect the interest of America -the country-.

Actually Cosmic, I'm the CBRD guy with the Mopp suits

In any case the PSI levels are down to under 50 already so life goes on and those poor primary and secondary school students would curse the fact that this happened DURING their school holidays

Except it's not. It's "surveillance theatre" in the same way porno-scanners in airports were "security theatre." It's just another way to funnel government money into private subcontractors' coffers.

I recommend reading this guy (http://www.schneier.com/blog/archive..._security.html) and more of his articles.

What syn says is dead on -- almost NONE of this BS actually makes us safer. It's largely ineffective smoke and mirrors used to fatten the wallets of product vendors. Much of it makes us LESS safe.

In the US at least, the modern paradigm is he's doing the best he can for his sponsors, i.e. the corporations who bought him.
