Different Series, Same Name?
I've noticed something between subbed anime and dubbed anime (or maybe because it just horribly noticable in this case)...but if anyone has ever seen CCS dubbed and then watched the subbed version (in that order), in my own opinion they are two very different series that share the same name and all the characters look the same. The mass amount of changes made to the dub are horrible lol. I don't want to list the changes because I could go on forever with the changes made and I'm on eps 12/70 of the sub. I can literally imagine seeing a huge list that has almost 100+ spoiler buttons listing changes from eps 1-12.

Geneon USA, back when they were still called Pioneer took the time to release two version of Cardcaptor Sakura. One DVD series is the from butchered and mangled "Cardcaptors" aired on U.S. TV and I'm guessing, Canadian TV as well. That DVD series is dub-only, in addition to the shameful hack-job. The other version is uncut, presented in all its glory and get this, it's sub-only, no dubs. What justification anyone felt while downloading an old Cardcaptor Sakura fansub--because of the Nelvana hack-job--is out the window. You can get this show uncut, and the subtitles to go along with the original Japanese voices, on an R1 DVD series released by Geneon USA. And if you are (not aimed at anyone specific) an enthusiastic CCS fan who can find the time to complain about the ungodly butchering of the show you love, wouldn't you like the entire series uncut on DVD for your collection? |

Can only say welcome to the wonderful world of commercialised nerfing. The company that first did the dubbing [Nelvana=evil] was chasing the money and didn't do enough homework on the material. It's also widely regarded as the worst dubbing job in the history in the business. Thing is, I wouldn't have minded as much if they just toned down the male/idol love, lolita complex and some suggestive themes dealing with incest [for anyone who hasn't a clue what this show is about- none of the above actually happens though there is heavy innuendo at times], but the company in question basically destroyed the core of the show with their edits.
Sakura Card Captor is basically a retelling of Pandora in a modern setting, a young girl opening a bookfull of trouble and having to fix it before doomsday. It's centre is here and everything is is just ancillary to it. So I was more than a little miffed when the focus of the dub was not on the girl but on a male supporting character. Some dumb studio exec thought it was more profitable to go after the male demographic, the never figured that the ppl who watch and love this show aren't divided by gender: they just do since it's a beautifully crafted story. Avoid the dub at all cost and get this one uncut: too cute and sweet to miss |

I remember Nelvana's biggest issue with the show being the female protagonist. They didn't think that would sell, so they recut the show to give as much screen time to Shaoran Lee as they possibly could. They ended up recutting so badly that they messed up the plot of the show.
One can only hope they learned their lesson when a show they picked up as a guaranteed hit flopped miserably. If I recall correctly, Pioneer's sub-only DVDs outsold the dub version by a handy margin. |

The Nelvana product I remember best from childhood would have to be Care Bears. They also had a hand in Tintin, Babar, etc. Mostly kid oriented stuff.
They actually keep a list of their shows up at http://www.nelvana.com. |

ah, so they were responsible for Beyblade...i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that show was dumbed down as well (didn't one of them, y'know, DIE?)
most of the stuff on their list begs the question: "WTF were they thinking?!" a lot of their shows are aired on HBO, a poor marketing decision for children's shows from the get go, most of the others are "post saturday morning/sunday morning cartoon shows" i.e. they air after the normal saturday morning run is finished. the rest of the shows, the butchered anime shows, air(ed) on ABC Family, which still doesn't mean decent ratings the only show on their i see that's not aimed at kids is Clone High, which was basically about a high school full of clones of historical figures, and it lasted, what, 2 episodes on MTV? |

Thou shalt worship the Goddesses of CLAMP!!!
...or not, it's your choice really. As for me, I slavishly read whatever I can get my hands on. Most of their stuff is aimed at an 8-15 crowd, I think, but it always has a running theme and an interesting twist that keeps the story from being boring. Magic Knight Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, Clamp School Detectives, Angelic Layer, and Chobits are in this set, as well as a few manga-only stories that don't get their own series, like Help Me, 20 Masks, Wish, and Campus Police Duklyon. They also have a string of titles aimed for an older audience, including RG Veda, Tokyo Babylon, X/1999, and Clover. Even if you try to avoid the kiddie comics, you can read and enjoy these. Currently Del Ray is publishing two of the most recent titles here in the US, Tsubasa: Resevoir Chronicle and xxXHolic. Tsubasa is a series for the younger set, but it has crossover characters from every other title, which makes it a great read for CLAMP fans. xxXHolic doesn't have anything too mature in it yet, but the themes and tone may push it into darker territory before it's done. |
