Movies get released over there in theaters.

Something like the Simpsons...that could be interesting to see Japanese-dubbed.

(Fun fact: At least for my Season 4 set, you can watch the 1st ep dubbed.)

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible for people in America to record, digitize, and send over the weekly copy of Simpsons, Friends (when it was on), Sex and the City (when it was on)...

Disclaimer: raikage does NOT watch, nor has he ever watched, Sex and the City

but why is everyone talking about dubbing? I think that bschultz's question was refering if theres a similar thing in Japan as the fansub anime scene here in the west, for example for dramas or western cartoons, Ill assume it probably exist, but its not as big as the anime fansub scene.

they DO dub that, because i have seen it in a japanese commercial, they have very very funny voices.

They may just sub them because alot of games like silent hill is subbed and made in english, but then again in japan most peoples second langauge is english isnt it?

In the major cities (I'm talking Tokyo and Oosaka here) english can be of some help, that is if the japanese person you are trying to talk to doesn't run away because he's embarassed of his level of english. In tojyo train stations and other things are indicated in english and there are alot of foreigners along with stores which are meant for foreigners. Outside the major cities, forget about it... (unless you have kj1980 as a guide )

Not sure but I think a lot of fansubbers are Japanese that are influent in english.
Anyway the ones that provide the RAWS are probably Japanese so.. I think a lot are Japanese Otakus.

Dubbed Movies

If I recall correctly, my friends told me that they went to see Lord of the Rings and Star Wars in the theaters. They were both English with Japanese subs. I would assume that they would dub them as well, much like we did with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I doubt there is any fan based dubbing (as I have never heard of it for anime either), but there might be small groups that sub various american shows. Personally, I can't find anything american that would entice someone to want to go through the trouble.

*shrugs* Why not? There's enough good shows out there.

Look at some of the more popular TV shows that have been out there in the past few years:
Simpsons
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel
Sex and the City
Alias
24
Sopranos
um..someone else help me out here...

Unfortunately...they don't dub or sub the TV shows, or at least that I know of.

However, some of these shows are dubbed. For example, the Simposons are aired in some areas of Japan. Also, satellite TVs in Japan gives you worldwide coverage, allowing you to watch from stations ranging from CNN to Cartoon Network.

In the case of movies, they do release subs on P2P networks such as WinMX.

I guess you people never read about the Japanese dub of the Magic School Bus.

edit: or Friends, for that matter. I remember reading "Friends" in katakana and laughing.

Just because we do it doesn't mean someone else does it.

I don't think they do. Why would they? I mean anime isn't the most popular thing in japan...although it seems to be America's 'window' into japanese culture

Anyways I am no expert on Japanese culture, since I'm chinese (altough chinese/japanese culture does collide alot, and is very similar in alot of tersm) I've lived in canada all my life so my 'sense' of culture is skewed and blended.

However with the time I've spent in asia...with family and friends there I've never heard of 'fansubs' of american shows...although I HAVE seen dubs of VERY popular american shows (mostly simpsons...however it didn't seem to be all that popular...). Knowing english means nothing haha I mean I swear if I didn't have friends/family there that knew the language to where i've traveled, I'd wouldn't get nearly as much of an experience.

And anime there I guess by alot of people is like what our 'cartoons' are like. More of a passtime, or just something to watch. I mean I guess it's popular, but I don't think it's as popular as people think it to be (but I could be totally wrong about this) (cept for simpsons...I mean simpsons RULES )

Think about it this way, majority of 'american' cartoons is wayyyyy below that of anime. They also have alot of sitcoms which are REALLY good and I would have to say still above our 'american' sitcoms.

The East and the West I think are completely diffrent and seprate, like comparing apples to oranges...

I mean I'm sure there are japanese people who DO watch american shows, and maybe there are small groups out there...because I only have had a limited perspective on what I've seen. But it's kinda hard to see.

It's just something you gotta go see...the way they do things, think, and their daily lives just seem 'diffrent' I mean it is kinda normal to me, because I do some of that stuff, but other things are just 'diffrent' I guess? who knows.

If they DID fansub some of our american cartoons though that would be pretty neat.
