And it's an ATI graphics card user.
(I would assume he would be running Windows XP, since this seems like a gaming rig)

The PC I built last December will do just fine. ^_^

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Cooler: Zalman CPNS9500
Mobo: ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
RAM: 4 GB 5300-DDR2 Kingston
HD: 1x 300GB WD Caviar + 3x 400GB Seagate Barracuda
Video: nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX
Audio: Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer
Case: Antec 900 + extra 80mm fan.
PSU: SeaSonic M600 (600 Watt, modular)
Optical drives: 1x DVD + 1x DVD-RW
Primary Screen: Samsung 971P (SPVA panel)
Secondary Screen: Samsung 931C (TN panel)
Speakers: Creative Inspire T7900 (7.1)
Pointing Device: Logitech G7
Keyboard: Logitech G15

To be frank, I've spent far too much on this thing, heh. But oh well. It was fun buying and building it, and it should last for a few years. ^_^ I plan on buying a 24" wide-aspect Samsung screen when the 244T's successor the 245T comes out (SPVA panel). Should allow me to properly watch 1080p video material, and also to get rid of this annoying TN-panel I still use as my secondary screen.

So yea, my dream PC would be the same as this, except for, the 245T instead of the 931C, a Quad-Core Xtreme Intel CPU rather than an E6600 (though this overclocks quite nicely), an 'Ultra' edition of the 8800GTX, and to deal with the additional power-needs of a faster GPU and CPU, I suppose the 700W version of SeaSonic's Modular PSU for good measure. Oh, and I have space for 2 more high-capacity hard-discs, certainly wouldn't mind. 1.36TB may seem like a lot, but it fills up a lot faster than you'd think.

P.S. Oh yea, I'm running Windows XP at the moment, but with a DX10-capable video card and 4GB RAM, it stands to reason that I would at some point install a Vista-partition, much though I hate everything about that OS.

Already own it. Mac Pro Quad, 2.66GHz Xeon 5150s, 4GB of RAM, 250GB, 360GB, and 750GB SATA300 hard drives, a 512MB ATI X1900XT, and a Dell 2407 display. Oh and a set of Logitech Z-5500s and a 9x12 Wacom Intuos tablet. Just need another one of these screens and I'll be golden. And another 750GB hard drive.

You realize that since the 8800GTX uses so much power it uses two leads rather than one for power you'd need FOUR power leads for that right? Whereas most PSU's offer one or two.

But then again, with a 1200W (!) PSU... guess it might not be a problem.

Are people here to post what they'd buy if they had the money, what they currently have, or are they asking for advice?

I've been hovering around something similar to Crovax's

It really sucks that my previous build is still holding up perfectly fine. The upgrade is so intensely needless ... and it breaks my heart because I love fresh hardware.

I already own my dream PC.
  • Pentium D 930 (Dual Core 3GHz)
  • ASUS P5WD2-E Premium (Intel i975X Chipset)
  • PowerColor ATI X300 256MB
  • 1GB Corsair PC6400 DDR2 800MHz
  • Sony 8x DVD+/-RW Optical Drive
Doesn't sound all that impressive, right? Until you add on the following:
  • HighPoint RocketRaid 2300 4-port SATA RAID controller
  • 2x SNT3141 4-drive SATA enclosures
  • 1x SNT2131 3-drive SATA enclosure (disconnected/not active)
  • 8x Samsung 400GB SATA300 Drives
  • Coolermaster CMStacker Enclosure & Antec 550W SmartPower 2.0 PSU

I don't call this thing "Heracles" for nothing. You can see the sucker in action right here.

Seriously, though.. I don't think I should think about more hardware right now.
