The question if this'll be a full-fledged anime series covering the game's entire story (aka Tales of Zestiria, Yu-No), or just a promotional prequel or similar for the game.

To my knowledge the only full-fledged adaptation of a Sakura Wars game was the 2000 Sakura Wars anime, which was a loose remake of the 1st game (some plot elements were changed, the spooky/serious factor increased, less emphasis on dating sim elements etc. - hearsay is the fandom of the time hated it.)

The rest were promotional OVAs whose stories were after-game spinoffs...

Doesn't look like it will cover the game to me, the scenes shown are clearly not from the beginning of the story (Teigeki don't have that kind of budget at the start) and Sakura is using a regular Mugen unlike the game.
The anime will also feature an all new Reveu(which is supposedly teased with the snow in the key visual) with a new character designer behind them.

They thing I kind of wonder if it will be a parallel story, or if it perhaps happens after the game's story.
All that is really known is that Sakura will be the protagonist instead of Kamiyama.

On the other hand, as one who was introduced to Sakura Taisen through that anime, I really like it.

The CG on this particular anime doesn't look too bad at least, which is a start.

Same here. First exposure to Sakura Taisen was through the anime, and I loved the series.

I Loved the serious/spooky vibe of the anime; I was quite surprised to find out the source games was like a cheesy sentai.

Definitely look like they're going full speed ahead with promoting the Sakura Wars animation .

Not so sure about the CG animation...I'm not against all-CG anime as a whole, and of course the Mecha being CGI is fine, but compared to the animation and the game and traditional 2D animation of past Sakura Wars entries, it just feels lacking .

Some people on the ANN forums said they hated the 1st anime; too low-budget and slow-paced. They felt the tie-in OVAs had better production values.

Although, I always felt the 1st anime was trying to recreate the look of an old-fashioned movie from the 1920s-30s.

The Sakura Taisen anime though imho still has the best version of Geki Teikoku Kagekidan

Also, there's a new official trailer up for the anime over at the official twitter, and it looks far better than I thought it'd look, even with the previous trailer.

Sorry, but that's not an anime trailer, that's game's opening.

Yeah, just learned about it. Still, they do seem to be using the same models as the anime.

The first OVA series of Sakura Taisen is definitely better than the TV series despite it being short and function more as some kind of prequel to the main story. It's animated better and paced better.

I'm also not a fan of how much of a pushover Ohgami was in the TV series. He only had one or two moments to shine while he spent the rest of the TV series either being lame at his job, getting knocked out or not being involved in the main battles. It makes you wonder why they made him the leader of the squad if he's only so-so at his job. That's why I was surprised when watching the movie where Ohgami suddenly became a badass when making his big entrance. For all I know, the movie doesn't belong in the same continuity as the TV series.

I still like the dark & creepy nature of the said TV series though. More of that please.

My research says the movie belongs in the game continuity, taking place between Sakura Wars 3 and 4. Iirc the movie served to introduce Ratchet Altair, who became one of the supervising commanders in Sakura Wars 5.

The TV anime was its own independent series.

Granted the anime likely downplayed Ogami's fighting roles in favour of showcasing the girls, but they did play up his serious authority captain side more, as well as Yoneda, Ayame and Kayama's serious sides. Esp. the episode when Yoneda got all badass trying to take down Aoi Satan/Yamazaki all by himself.

(Was surprised to find out game Kayama was goofier compared to anime Kayama.)

Also loved the anime's dark creepiness. The demon biomecha robots made of inner organs were one of the highlights (slightly disappointed the game's evil robots were just normal metal ones.)

I recall there was a manga version by Masa Ikku (previously published by Tokyopop) that was more faithful to the 1st game's plot, but also used dark creepiness to cut the cheesiness.

Given the game's English version release is scheduled for Spring 2020, the best case scenario is the game is released to time as the anime in April 2020. Especially if the anime is an afterstory of the main game.

PS. That's a lot of DLC content from now until January; and it's mostly avatar cosmetics. I get buying the beachwear DLC, not so much for the glasses/fox tails/angel wings and halo ones.

The new series follows a new generation. There is a manga adaptation currently ongoing. The latest chapter revealed the identity of the enemy commander, you're not going to believe who it is.

Not surprising, considering one major plot point are the last generations going missing 10 years ago.

I'd guess Oogami Ichirou? It would be a recurring theme, considering Shinguuji Sakura's father was an enemy commander in the original game, after being a hero for the Empire.
