Obsessed/stalker-like characters in anime

How often do you guys see the crazily obsessed, stalker-like characters appear in anime? You know the type: the ones who seem to have nothing else on their minds aside from their fixation of another character.

A good example is Kaorin who, for those who have seen Azumanga Daioh, know that her fascination with Sakaki seems be resemble that of an obsessed fangirl. She worships and idolizes Sakaki, and is overly jealous of her whenever she thinks somebody is getting in her way.

For some reason, I see characters like her and more recently Reimi (from Bamboo Blade) appear in anime. They do seem to be there for comedic purposes, unlike some of the more 'serious' and creepy stalker characters (like that character in the second episode of Hell Girl - very creepy).

They're quite common in anime nowadays, but the one thing I've noticed is the double standards between men stalkers/obessed and women stalkers/obessed. Men no matter the circumstances are portrayal as sick bastards Gauron from FMP, Creed from Blackcat, or heck try any series with some j-pop idol being stalked by on of her over-obsessed fan, chances are it will be male and his actions will be irredeemable.

For women though it's very different. In most situations they're just seen as annoying or taking things a little too far soifon from Bleach, nakanotani mina from airmaster, Haruka Nishida from Kanamemo, or heck take any series with a character that "looks up" to another characters.

The weird thing though even when you have a who stalkerish/obessive character triats aren't played for laughs, they still get viewed in a more positive light. what weird is that there almost always justified. Shizuru Fujino from mai-hime(justified), Nina Einstein from code geass, Shiori Tsuzuki from witchblade(justified).

one of my favorite characters is a purely obessed character, madarame is probably one of the most geniune characters I've seen, chalk one up for genshiken, if done well these characters can be an interesting and intruiging tool to progress stories or just entertain.

Yuka from "11eyes" would be a recent example I suppose.

Well, it makes sense if you see that 99% of anime are made by men for boys. Males are presented as fixated on getting the best in a field while women are presented as fangirls going all tsundere over the males.

Well, if they ever make an adaptation of Mirai Nikki (and why wouldn't they) there's a classic one in there.

She's a decent comic relief to an already comedic anime.

If girls do it, then it is cute, but if guys do it, it is down right criminal

this is my observation for most situations in anime and manga, hm...

There's that hankerchief dude in Shuffle!. Turns out in the end he was stalking the main character as opposed to the girls around him, that was quite a laugh

Wasn't it because: things that male characters are so obsessed with, but are not dare enough to do for several months, tend to be creepy

Not many of them have something called "maiden heart" after all

Shirayuki Mizore comes to mind, though she's more of an 'open' one. She admits being a stalker to the person she follows... who is also a friend of hers already.

Oh man, he was creepy. But he didn't seem too bad as he only appeared rarely and did nothing more than observe for a short period.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN!? YUNO ISN'T CUTE!? You better stick "in my opinion" in there .

The trait, stalkers, is a established fetish!

For some strange reason, it seems that stalker girls appeal to me. Matoi (SZS), Mizore (Rosario+Vampire) and especially Yuno (Mirai Nikki).
