H.264 Mkv Data Analysis

I use the program MediaInfo to find out the statistics for my media files.

I was looking to convert some H.264 Mkv files into Xvid Avi files with mp3 audio, and I ran into a snag.

When looking for the bit rate for the audio (usually around 128-256 kbps), I found that there was no bit rate, only a resolution (16 bits). Is there any correlation between the resolution and a bit rate for the audio? If not, what is a suitable audio bitrate to convert to?

Snazzy thread title, by the way. I looked at this thread out of curiosity rather than to provide advice.

Yes. But to give you an idea of how insignificant the difference of bits per sample is, all (retail) CDs use 16-bit audio. Haven't heard a 24-bit sample in years. That's curious about MediaInfo, though. I have it installed and haven't noticed this little lack of a feature.

Well, if you have any version of ffdshow/ffdshow-tryouts (included in CCCP as well as on Sourceforge) installed, double clicking on the blue taskbar button brings up the audio panel. Make sure you're looking at the Info & CPU panel window thing, then look at the input description for the bitrate.

Um, have you tried using GSpot or CCCP's Insurgent? Both of them are useful if you also need a bit of a "second opinion".

Yeah, I was trying to use SUPER Converter to turn them all into Xvid Avi files with mp3 audio, but the lack of data was keeping me from trying to convert. I finally found the bit rate to be a scant 96 kbps. Of course, when trying to convert, I run into a snag, and I haven't been able to get onto the SUPER forum since January (who the hell makes a flash-based forum!?!).

I see. Thanks for recommending another good one, as I know only two for the job.

Insurgent uses MediaInfo's library, though a very outdated one. Blame movax.

OK, but the output is much less verbose than if you just run MediaInfo in Text mode, or not? I haven't run CCCPI for about half a year now, but that's where I remember it being it...

I think it's because MediaInfo wasn't as verbose back then. I could be wrong though.

Insurgent's media info is still good for pretty much all troubleshooting purposes.
