Couldn't have said it better myself. It's not about specific holidays themselves, it's about having a good time with those you care about, for that's what's truly important.

Be of good cheer, everyone!

We don't do xmas (seeing as we're not really religious anywho in the house lol), but the biofamily is Wiccan so for the last decade or so, we've gone over there for Yule brunch or dinner or whatever. They do a gift exchange etc in the morning for the children.

Since this is the first year I've gone No Contact w/ my biosis (aka cutting her out of my life entirely), I'll be dropping off the cubs to my parents' house for the aforementioned brunch thing, and spending those hours at home w/ my hubby (childless woot).

We've never had much money so we've never bought into the commercialism of the whole thing; the cubs get a few gifts every year, but they feel it's more important to be with family instead. We also (hubby and I) have a tradition of having some friends (this year my gf/her hubby/kids also) over on whatever Sunday is closest to Yule, to spend the holiday with people we actually get along with(as we generally don't get along with the biofam and drama ensues), and which also leaves xmas free for them to spend with THEIR families or whatever.

And then I refuse to leave the house on Xmas day LOL Black Friday & Xmas/New Year's Day I don't leave my house. CRAZY people driving around here and whatnot.

I get excited when the countdown starts and especially when the breeze gets colder. Yey Christmas!

I've come to appreciate it more now that I've lived apart from my family for a year and I'll be able to go back during these holidays.

What can you say, Christmas is pretty much a commercial holiday. Things sure feel different to when you were a kid and the innocence of that time and such. Though getting together for a Christmas dinner/buffet with my dads side of the family is always an enjoyable thing to do.

Heh... yeah we avoid Black Friday (and being out and about much of the weekend) as much for personal safety from the idiot frenzy as for any cultural value statement. We like the idea of *stores closing for the holidays* like they used to so people could be with their loved ones. And yes, they usually got paid holiday pay or a bonus, too.

I hate Christmas because I never get any gifts and I'm left all alone.

The first person who calls me horrible for not appreciating the "family and togetherness" aspect of the holiday needs to finish reading this post first.

My family disowned me eight years ago. I haven't spoken to my mother since. A significant portion of my family are hardcore Southern Baptist and thus see me on the same level as a demon who crawled out of Hell.

Christmas offers me nothing right now. At least before the economy fucking died, I could work extra holiday hours and make a little extra cash.

Now I'm pretty much doomed to spend a cold Christmas sleeping in a dirty alley, receiving nothing, not even the love and companionship of friends and family, all alone.

So yeah, I hate Christmas. I actually hate all holidays. To me, holidays are nothing but just another day, except I'm left even more alone than usual because all my friends are too busy with their families and loved ones. Just another day except everything is closed and people don't get back to me on job applications or interviews.

The holidays fucking suck if you have no family or significant other.

Maybe it's just me, but if they were REAL friends, you'd be included in that "loved ones".

We've always invited close friends to spend the holidays with me; it bugs the crap out of me for someone to spend them alone. Were you here in the Metro DC area, you'd be welcome to spend it with us too

I'm sorry things aren't looking up yet Also your family sucks pretty hard for disowning you. Their loss, IMO. You're a strong, intelligent person from what I read on here, and if they can't look beyond your sexuality (which I assume is likely one of the main causes for the disownment), then seriously, they're complete morons.

Those aren't very considerate friends, if they can be called friends. Just stay positive and try your best, hopely things will turn around for you.

It's not their fault they have family and loved ones to visit and I don't. I don't blame them for enjoying their holidays, but it does make me sad because I can't do the same. =/

cheyennew, PM'd in response since I don't want to threadjack. ^^;

i hate when people act like christmas is just a holiday for silly americans addicted to consumer culture. personally i don't see anything wrong with that, i mean who doesn't like receiving gifts whether they're 5 dollars or 500 dollars. getting stuff leaves you feeling good regardless of whether or not you've done anything deserving a gift. the act of giving is also rewarding if only to see the look on the other persons face when they open whatever it is. not saying being with family and friends isn't great during the holidays, but the consumer aspect of it is fun to a certain extent too.

I have to disagree with this.. my "mother" (biomom) is legendary with my hubby and I for giving absolutely horrific gifts, we suspect just so she can say "look I got you something". When I was younger, literally, she gave me a set of "sock organizers" that were cheap plastic bins. and by cheap I mean think of the plastic stuff wine glasses comes in.. THAT'S what they were rofl!

Truth be told, I'd've preferred she be genuine, rather than just giving a token.

I DON'T like receiving gifts for the most part. I like the ones with lots of thought behind them, like my husband walking a mile in the rain to get me a clearance sale ring he saw me looking at but we couldn't afford it. He arranged with our landlady @ the time to be short the 75$ for it, and got it. He proposed to me that night with it.

THAT is a gift

sucks your mom doesn't put for any genuine effort into her gift giving. you should try getting her something nice one year so she feels guilty the next time she pulls a stunt like that . genuine gifts are cool, but if the price is right or if its something i really needed i could care less if there is any thought behind it honestly. ps that last bit about your husband walking through the rain to get you get you a ring he couldn't afford and proposing to you the same night does make the perfect gift.
