I'll second Book Girl/Bungaku Shoujo, Clannad, Toradora, and Spice & Wolf. All are great series.

For now I'm going to have to say Kimi ni Todoke. However, I have yet to see Clannad, so my opinion may change.

Hmm... Maybe not the best romantic series I ever saw, but a very good one. Saikano is about a romance between two individuals. It has a lot of action as well, but it is mostly about the struggles these 2 face.

Another very famous anime is Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (aka Rumbling Hearts). It has a lot to do with tragedy, and tough life decisions.

Kimagure Orange Road is an oldie, but a goodie. It has some comedy, magic, and romance.

Tenshi na Konamaiki is very much overlooked, but nonetheless an excellent series. It has a lot of comedy, some action, and some romance. The story gets better and better as the series goes on, and it has some magic elements to it.

Additional Comments:
For animes similar to Kanon, they would be Air, Clannad, Ef~A Tale of Memories, Shuffle!, Da Capo, and the sequels to a lot of these anime.

Off the top of my head
I think toradora was a good one, but then you also have Tsubasa chronicles and Akkikan! Then there is also MM! Which was also pretty good if your into that kinda stuff.
Hope this helps!

How could I have forgotten Chobits in my other post. I really enjoyed that one. Does that even qualify as a romance?

bokura ga ita is probably my FAVOURITE romance anime. the art is very minimalistic, but it's a solid story and has a lot of heart.

lovely complex is romantic comedy done right. very fulfilling anime.

i also think fruits basket, while initially reverse harem, is a solid romance anime.

honey & clover is an excellent josei romance and i also loved the romantic subplots of cross game.

i also think the girl who leapt through time had lovely depictions of romance but the charm is really the characters and story.

I loved Fruits Basket, even tho the romance didn't really happen in the anime. And Kimi ni Todoke is great and so is Clannad and I like Uraboku and even Vandread

It's tough to pick just one romance anime, it all depends on the mood your in I guess. You can go from fun and playful like Amagami SS and Toradora to down right depressing but powerful stories like Clannad After Story and Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien...which will leave you depressed for a couple days after.
