There are other words that are vastly more important that this change, trust me.
And we did keep the same kind of "difficulty" as the japanese fanshad: As they did need English knowledge to solve the epitaph, western fans need Japanese knowledge to solve the riddle.

The change to the epitaph itself isn't major. The big change will be in the sections of the game that discuss the epitaph. Like the Japanese version, the odds are very good that only a very few people will get the full answer, even after the EP5 hints, but it should be solvable.

Some have already answered it, the leading theory appears to be correct so far. You can find the details around this forums if you look hard enough. By the looks of it, It would have been impossible for people that didn't have a good understanding of Japanese and actually read the EPs in japanese as the epitaph and the hints during the first 4 episodes where lost in translation.
