On a mission

Haven't had as much time lately to go into detail, but Episode 9 was a good episode. The last part almost felt sort of harrowing and not easy bait for me to poke fun of as usual. Just the mastermind Haruta thinking revealing everyone's soul to be the way to seek the truth, but reality disagrees with just finding the truth at times given the limitations of the society gave the series a serous tone all of a sudden.
Just finished 10; I'll post more about it later.

Ep11 was another good one. The parallel between the older Makoto and the younger Serizawa was interesting, as was the surprising development for Serizawa near the end of the ep. She's doing her type of character -- a sort of mild tsundere? -- extremely well (voiced by Seto Asami). This show gives me a warm feeling every week.
Did anyone else find this episode's colours richer? Or at least warmer? I loved the look of the episode, anyway. This whole series, and this ep in particular, also seem to like tight framing. Very effective. Haruta's jealousy was nice, as was thinking about where sensei's preferences might lie. I guess Makoto is like a sister to him, but you never know. No indication of anything, anyway.

Hmm, I'm not sure what to feel about the latest episode regarding the eye problem. I'm glad the show is focusing on music again especially with piano but there's a sense of discouragement I feel there. Makoto is a somewhat interesting character to me though for episode 11.
On a lighter note, cute outfits for the festival.

Welp, another couple to ship. Haruta and Chika first name basis, Nao and Kairuu first name basis, so mayhaps that Shinjirou and Makoto first name basis means they're also childhood friends? Hopefully Sensei has been under that family's tutelage since he was a kid...

Episode 11:
Gotta say that Makoto Yamanobe having similar circumstances to Naoko Serizawa is disheartening. On the other hand, she got ivory keys on her clavietta which diminishes the Imperial Bösendorfer piano a lot! Apart from that mystery, I'm disappointed that P.A.Works skip Shimizu South High School Brass Band Club's performance and move them closer towards the national competition. I'm hoping that next week's episode, they would perform! |

So yeah. this show is over...and overall I wasn't really impressed including the finale.
Speaking of which, the finale had everyone come together and I did think it was neat that they performed in front of the crowd after all their hard work with sensei. But all in all, I thought the show was rather boring. Wasn't a bad show but just wasn't really into it.

The main problem is that for what I have watched (not the entire show, I dropped it in episode 6 or so) the show doesn't know where it is going. I mean, it's about the music? about the mistery? it is a romance with a no so typical pairing while baiting the main characters together? I didn't know very well what I was watching and the "cases" where not that interesting to me, and as it wasn't slice of life either... in the end it was slowly pushed back in my view queue untill finally I just stopped.

Well this mess is over. Idk how I can say this but Glasslip was more enjoyable than this and it looked far better. I guess ill excuse this for not being an original work but an adaption.
6/10 for the entire series, I guess I was too spoiled with Hibike to expect another good music based anime. Even if it wanted to go the mystery route it was still very predictable and stale. |

Not the greatest, but somewhat decent. For me it was just a show to fill in my daily hour of anime, which happens to have no good shows on Wednesday at all. The characters were likable and nobody was annoying (no other the top tsundere or chuunibyou), even though most of them didn't have much depth. I guess I came in not expecting much and I am not as dissatisfied? Either ways my favorite episode would have to be the one with the delinquent turning teacher.

Obvious sequel hook is obvious, but I'm not holding my breath.
Yeah. It was fun, a bit inconsequential, but I found it enjoyable even though Haruta often seemed to be acting without the slightest fragment of tact or decency. On the whole, fluff, but entertaining fluff, and I'm OK with that. |

The twelfth episode came without the impact of a finale. The plot flowed exactly like all the past eleven episodes, and the resolution felt anti-climactic, except for that complete performance of the band at the end and the exchange between Haruta and Chika acknowledging each other. So what exactly was HaruChika? A story about budding romance between young kids and their teacher? A musical journey of a struggling brass band? Or the adventures of a mystery-solving duo? To me, the mystery aspect weighed more than the brass band or romance aspects, and the story overall is very imbalanced in some places. However, for some reason I was able to keep up with each episode. Maybe the story worked for me regardless of the issues it had. (And sometimes, "a story that works" is fine enough for me.) To those who know the original novel, how far have we come? Are there hopes for a sequel or at least a movie? We can't possibly let Haruta and Chika's story off at this early a stage. Oh, and I'm sure Kumiko's band would wreck Chika's band no problem. :P

This show, in my opinion, was far larger than its simple surface. The main characters resonated with feeling and depth, for me. The ending gets high marks from me for being so indefinite. I've never felt an ending like this before. But the announcer's voice definitely says this show "has been brought to you by" the sponsors, which is only said in the final episode of a season. Is sensei really coming back next year? I guess so, but it's not a hundred percent certain. He might just be around until the end of this school year? Overall -- in addition to just about everything -- I was most taken with the performance of Emi Sarah Bridcutt as Chika, and the character design by Nishida Asako -- especially the eyes, and Chika's multi-coloured eyes in particular. I have trouble giving great laurels to the story -- I mean, what was it? -- but the incredible flow and resonance of things, for me, means I have to praise both the director Hashimoto Masaku (Tari Tari, Soul Eater Not) and the lead writer Yoshida Reiko (dozens of shows, including Marimite, D. Gray-Man, and K-On). My favorite show of the season. My other favorites, Erased and Ajin, might be "better," in identifiable ways, but this show affected me most.

Not one of PA's best, but not one of their worst either. The show was a fun diversion that never took itself too seriously, and Chika stole every scene she was in.
It's a shame PA doesn't do crossovers, because I'd love to see Chika interact with Ohana or the Tari Tari crew. Maybe the twins can hang out with Minchi

Episode 12:
Well, looks like Shimizu South High School Brass Band Club didn't move closer to the national competition. On the other hand, Shinjirou Kusakabe decided to stay as their club advisor. Gotta say that while HaruChika wasn't a bad series, it felt lacking in terms of how P.A.Works handle mystery. I felt that it was easy for Haruta to solve most of it. Still, this series won't have a sequel where Naoko Serizawa joined the Brass Band Club! |
