Doesn't feel right though.

I know it sounds weird, but it has a...upbeat 'good' feel to it, not one for the aftermath of a dramatic death scene.

Think 'Take a shot', it feel very very similar to it.

I still think it's very incongruent. I can't fit a shocking sacrifice and that song together...

Unless its after the "Gundam Admiral Charge", when everyone thinks Hayate is dead. They goes on a rampage against Spagetti, then he laughs and activates his "Trap Card", only to be intercepted by a badly-wounded, but still alive Hayate. Cue [Pray].

"I have come, at the turn of the tide..."

It still fits the "shock" part, and the beat is certainly upbeat enough for that. Just my $0.02.

Given that MSLN references a lot of "Super Robot" anime and its ilk, having an upbeat song as a "good guy" perishes under overwhelming odds while taking out a sizeable chunk of the enemy forces (or protecting loved ones) is not to be discounted in this series.

I'll take your word for it on the "Super Robot" part, but I still can't see/imagine/feel it

If Hayate does die, the shock would render the Knights crushed mentally and Nanoha/Fate too stunned to move.

I can however, see things working the way Kha described, though I hope that isn't the case...

that sounds like a pretty reasonable scenario for that to happen with the insert song "pray". I'll be kinda disappointed if nothing like that happens, but nonetheless, we did get a hint that its suppose to happen during a very shocking scene.
But judging from the tune of the song, it can also sound like a sacrificing kind of song...like the "get out of here while I distract the enemy before this whole place collapses" kind of scene.
