Similar to Ghost in the Shell
I'm in the process of (re)watching every bit of the GitS series I can get my hands on at the moment, and have fallen in love with it all over again. I've always thought it was one of a kind, but maybe I'm wrong? I'd like something similar to GitS in the sense that there's an amazing main who inspires me to new levels of fandom like the Major, and a storyline that somewhat revolves around the police-type cases Section 9 works on. Argh. Too hard to explain exactly what I'm looking for...>_< Just...something as awesome as GitS, doesn't need to be futuristic or mecha. In fact, forget the policing bit too, just as long as it's really mindblowingly good. Thanks in advance. ^^

Well so true, its one of my favorite but also its one of a kind, really hard to get similar element package. "Warui Otoko" was amazing.
There are some anime which can you get the same Quote:
Darker than Black - this is just the one you need for now. Monster Full Metal Alchemist, FMA Brotherhood RahXephon Code Geas Deathnote, but u must have seen it. Infact there can be heaps of them, so perhaps you should mention the ones you seen already and liked so people don't end up suggesting those. Moreover "Mind blowing" & "Awesome" are not very useful descriptions.

Check out Real Drive (Senno Chosashitsu). Another show originally created by Shirow Masamune and animated by Production IG. A lot of people call it 'slice of life Ghost in the Shell', and it's personally one of my favourite shows of all time.

The Patlabor movies 1 & 2 (haven't seen #3), #1 actually seems like a test-bed for Ooshi for the GitS movie in certain parts.
The Patlabor series and OVAs are good too, but only a few episodes actually qualify as 'GitS-like', Patlabor is more light-hearted (with a good amount of hilarity) in general. |

I agreed that GitS is too one of kind and nothing so far seems to deliver as complete and engaging a package. They all seem to fizzle somewhere along the line.
My recommendations: Black Lagoon - Action, teamwork and perhaps animation aspects. Kara no Kyoukai - Lead character, investigation (using the term loosely) and a little bit of the philosophical aspect. Animation too. Higashi no Eden - From the same writing team and production company. Started out strong but it did not quite pay off for me in the end.

Hm...I haven't researched most of these yet, but just going by recommendations, Patlabor series, Real Drive, and Moribito are at the top of my list. XD I've tried Ryoko, and yes, the story wasn't much fun, but it was an amusing one-off thing. Death Note is a 'NO' and I've seen Kara no Kyoukai, so I'll just have to wiki all the other titles here. XD
