1.Madoka
I can relate to her very well.In episode 10 we also learn how strong she can be. Also for what she did in the last episode. 2.Homura Not quite as relateable for me,but close.Instead she has a far more tragic backstory. She lost a few points for rebellion.Hopefully the sequel will redeem her in some way. 3.Kyoko. For no particular reason.I just kind of like her. She seems like a nice person to hang out with. Plus, she always has candy.

Mami was my favorite. She just gave off this vibe that no one else gave off... And she had a lot of character development for just three episodes.
Also threw in a vote for Sayaka and Kyubey, just because of how twisted both of them are. Love them both!

I personally picked Sayaka as my favorite.
Why? Because to me, she is the most fascinating and thematically rich character in the show. Think about it. She pretty much meets all the requirements for the typical MG hero. Selfless? Check. Does stuff for the boy she loves? Check. A strong feeling of self righteousness and morality? Double check. Heck, even her appearance harkens to the image of a caped knight or crusader. She's essentially everything that makes a superhero. Her personality also plays a part in this. Like I said, she sacrifices her wish for the man she loves, while saying that she needs nothing in return. She refuses help from anyone else, including taking Grief Seeds from others, as she views that as "amoral", and only wants to rely on herself. Basically, she wants to shoulder other people's troubles. Overall, she believes that acting as heroic as you can, taking everything on your shoulders alone, and not relenting makes one a hero, and she desperately tries to live up to that ideal. However, the show (and Gen Urobuchi) slowly but surely reveal that this is not the case. Simply being well-intentioned and fighting as hard as you can will not turn you into a hero, nor will it necessarily lead to a good outcome. Selfishness is a part of human nature, and no matter how hard we try, we will never be able to truly divorce ourselves from it, as humanity is a flawed species indeed. Not to mention that her ideals of heroism are very much black and white, when the show goes to great lengths to show that there are shades of grey to most actions and people, and holding yourself up to some sort of pure ideal will fail. So in a sense, Sayaka Miki's whole character arc is that of a Tragic Hero, as well as a Deconstruction of the traditional notions of heroism (which Urobuchi loves to explore and tear apart). Her fatal flaw is argued by some as being her selflessness and love for Kyousuke, but I would argue that it is something else. Rather, I see her main fatal flaw as being her inability to reconcile her ideals of heroism and her self-image of being one with the reality of that she is anything but the hero she sees herself as. Why else do you think she breaks into moments of insanity (like the fight against Elsa Maria) and grows increasingly desperate to prove that she is unlike the ones she sees as "amoral" and that she is still in the right. Her final words just before her transformation in Oktavia von Seckendorf are her realization of this. To make a long story short, Sayaka is basically the female Magical Girl version of Capt. Martin Walker from Spec Ops: The Line. And that's why I feel she is the most fascinating character int he entire series, and even one of the most interesting ones I've ever encountered in fiction (which I also present to critics who say that Madoka's characters are shallow). |

I would argue that Sayaka is a hero. She saved Madoka in Episode 4. She took a big and ultimately costly risk in order to successfully restore Kyousuke's hand. She showed considerable courage throughout the majority of the anime, refusing to back down against a forceful and physically stronger foe in Kyouko. Are these not clear signs of heroism? Now, you could argue that Sayaka had an overly optimistic view of how likely and easily a hero is to achieve both happiness and success. Nonetheless, she is a hero.

the problem wasnt sayaka, rather it was the system it was based on.
put sayaka in any other magical girl fic and she'd be like the perfect magical girl, as most of the qualities that lightdragonman has said. actually, I dare say sayaka has little bits of pieces from the other characters. she's got madoka's desire to help out people, but not so much to the point of being a pure martyr. she's got kyouko's direct and forwardness, but not to the point that she's got no delicacy. she's got mami's... desire to appear reliable I guess, but she's not afraid of being able to show her vulnerable side(at least to madoka). and most of all, she's got homura's relentless love for someone else, but obviously not quite as extreme/obsessive. all of that makes her the most likable to me, like she's just well balanced overall in character. again, her downfall only came thanks to all the pressure she was given. had it been much slower, or hell have none of that happened, she'd really serve as a strong driving force. I see her as the one who will keep the whole situation cheerful and light, if they had formed properly. kinda like how in the different story after she got revived by madoka. despite being in a tense situation as they were going to face against walpurgisnacht, she was pretty much teasing and joking around, as a way to ease out the tension. madoka may be the one who'll probably keep the group hopeful in dire times, but sayaka I feel would be the one that would make the group be able to ease up and relaxed.

I know I voted for Sayaka, but that was long before Rebellion reared its head. You probably know who it is by now, what if you're bothering to travel out to a sub-forum like this. Also I can still see my old post on this page holy shit.
Spoiler for Homura Akemi, Madoka Movie 3: Rebellion:

That depends on what you mean by facing her demons. The Little Mermaid did keep respect for the one she loved, but through The Spearman's words and everything she went through it's like she could never acknowledge what she really wanted (the bigger demon in her, so to speak), couldn't vent before it ultimately destroyed her. The Demon had no respect, but at the same time, she acknowledged her own desires and ultimately gave herself a happy end, albeit very corrupted one. I guess my interpretation of this is who wins out over their own problems, though I'd admit the Demon's solution may only be ephemeral, and ironically might be running away from the problem despite being closer to it.
