AnimeSuki Fall Banner Contest: Background Gradient Vote
It has been a while since we've changed the banners shown at the top of the Forums, and so we're planning a contest to provide a much-needed refresh.
The theme of this contest will be: Fall/Thanksgiving/Hallowe'en If you are interested in participating in this contest, we would like your feedback about which of the following background gradients would work best with the designs you can imagine for this theme. Whichever background receives the most votes will be used for this contest, and become the new background gradient at the top of AnimeSuki Forums for the duration of the rotation (tentative: mid-October to end-November). The poll will be open from now until Friday, 23 September 2011.

The others are just recycled ones that have been used before; I believe the orange one was even used several times. ...and it's more of a ugly brown if you don't focus just on the lower part.

Black without a doubt. The banner content's contrast will shine nicely and some proper lighting might do wonders.
Also, I can't imagine creating a banner with that orange background. The colors would clash in a ridiculous way. I can only see black silhuettes working in that. Damn. The blues...well, they're old, needs a change before they come back. Btw, I stumbled upon this thread by a complete accident and it's deadline already. Why no "VOTE HERE OR DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH!" popups or alerts of some kind? I mean, look at the votes...a few dozen individuals changing what thousands will look at? Feels a tiny bit rushed. The background is as much a huge deal as the things we all slap on it and call art. Oh...well, I guess that explains it.

Orange one just looks awful to work with TBH; the colors are just really really old school. I don't think the staff here puts too much emphasis on how they look (at a glance) and too little emphasis on how they can be used. Unless you intend to stick the gradient bare naked up there, think hard on what those colors offer.

For those that think that the orange gradient doesn't work, try these links and see if that can change your mind:

Personally, I checked out some of those Orange banners, and I didn't like them that much. I do think that the colors clash in some cases. I also found that the best-looking Orange banners merely had orange at the far sides, with backgrounds from inserted images almost entirely covering over the gradient background itself. The fact that some banner makers felt it was necessary to do this speaks to me of the weaknesses of the orange banner gradient. I much prefer something that can flow naturally from the gradient background, which is definitely possible with black, imo.

And this is not a question of Orange background would produce bad banners, but rather Orange background is annoying to work with, and by consequence will produce mediocre ones. It's no secret that if you start out with good "stock" and an idea of how things should work together you get better results then if you randomly pick something and botch things togheter. ps. all the really good looking ones there are the ones that in a way replace 90% of the background though some trick; at least in the banner portion
