This thread is for the sole purpose of discussing the light novel series Hidan no Aria. Seeing that the main thread is now devoted to the anime, I thought it would be appropriate to seperate novel discussion out from that thread.

His brother's way of activating Hysteria mode is to crossdress, that's his way of activating it manually. Kinji grew up in a family that was basically allies of justice and his brother was the best of the best so of course he idolizes his brother.

The major thing that the novel offers which the manga have not reached yet (I mean scanlated) and obviously haven't shown in the first episode is the bloodline of the characters. Each characters are descended from different famous people. It'll not only be revealed until they get to the climax of the Butei Killer arc. What makes it interesting as well is they applied the histories of the said famous people and applied it to the plot. As the story progresses, more characters descended from a different famous figure pop up every volume, complicating the plot.

And supernatural powers form a central element of the story. Example, Jeanne d'Arc's 30th descendant appears later wielding the Durandal blade.

It's good. When I read the originals, then I compare them to the translated versions, I have no issue with the translations.

That's actually good reading the novel as you translate.
The awesomeness that you felt from the novel after reading it should push you in translating it more. :D And it's good while it lasts.
I'm not sure how to translate "感動" in English accurately, but you get that 感動 after reading the novel, you have this urge to have the other people feel the same 感動 you have felt from the novel. At least that's what I felt, and one reason I started translating v3.

About your translation, it's good. In behalf of all HnA fan, I thank you and am really grateful that you took this as a pet project and still sticking to it.
You translate 10x faster, and the quality I should admit is better than mine.

The awesomeness that you felt from the novel after reading it should push you in translating it more. :D And it's good while it lasts.

The best part of translating is when you're translating an emotional scene and you're able to weave the words so they don't lose any of their impact. It should be just as epic and awesome when you're reading it in English as in Japanese.

As long as you retain the meaning, I think that's most important. If you have to be literal then do so by all means. Because all those emotional scenes, is best described like painting a picture not long text.

Kinji was trained since he was small or rather his brother is teaching him some tricks since he was a kid. And given the chance he enroll into Butei school to follow his brother. He learns lots of stuff in assault and inquestia which he uses most of the time though.... well Hysteria Mode is just way different. From normal into super human mode.

Well, I hold large amounts of bias for this series as well, given that I dedicate massive amounts of time and effort ino it.

That said, maybe I'm translating it badly, but I've always liked Kinji's character, except maybe in parts of Volume 2.
As for his hate for girls...well, it would be incorrect to say he hates them, but he would rather not stay close to them. At least, in the beginning of the novels.
But yes, I actually like the characters in HnA quite a lot, regardless of how most viewers say they are cliche.

This isn't surprising since Riko is the most ambitious one and wanted to become stronger more than anyone else in EU, so she'll recruit any powerful people as much as possible.

Remember the line that Aria said in v3c2? If the government learned the involvement of someone in EU, they will be treated the same as dead. So in short, Riko had managed to recruit some people via "abduction", which in turn the government made it looked like the people she abducted dead because they involved themselves in EU (branding Riko as "Butei Killer"). This also kept the government's reputation because they didn't want the public to know of Buteis joining a criminal organization.

I also think that why the government made Kinji's brother as a scapegoat is because it is one way of countering the possibility of the traitor Butei going back to society. They kinda forced them into hiding since there will be no good life waiting for them if they go back and thus it kept the fact that they were still alive concealed.


Kana didn't come back to society after EU arc and went into hiding somewhere with Patra.
I believe Cao Cao said something similar to Kinji in v7 regarding this matter while they were trapped in the train.

Also....Cao Cao uses a freaking Desert Eagle....gods that is like a hand rifle. Given how strong the main cast are, it's surprising no one else uses it.

why yes Nera. the .50 AE is one of the most high power bullets to reach the table. the power it has can literally punch through light grade kevlar thats built to stop subsonic or standard grade ammunition liek 9mm and .45ACP

the only problem with the desert eagle is that the damn recoil it brings to your wrists. the .500 S&W bullet had ZOMG recoil, but its usually loaded to revolvers whereas THIS thing is semi-auto.

Yeah, as ZeKeR said, the Desert Eagle's bullet, the .50 AE caliber, is actually bigger than the colt .45. It's one of the biggest handguns out there-- and pretty much impossible to use 1 handed. Smaller caliber guns are hard enough to be accurate with with one hand, something as big as the desert eagle will probably just break your wrist. :heh: Though, breaking through the vest also depends on the threat rating of the vest. Some vest are meant for high-caliber rounds (like SWAT armor).

Let's talk about this:

Vol 1 is really good because of the touching moments between Kinji and Aria. Aria got a cross-shaped scar on her forehead during the bus hijack mission because she tried to protect Kinji. She has to push her hair down in the front and not show her forehead to hide the scar. The scene in the hospital where Kinji saw Aria looking in the mirror crying with tears on her face is really touching. I really like how the book ended with the airplane rescue and how Aria was near death (ie. her heart stopped) and the emergency landing.

Vol 2 is really nothing special except we learned that there are more super power users in the world.

Vol 3 about Riko's struggle with Dracula was very well done.

Vol 4 and 5 is excellent because of the explanation of Hidan.

Vol 6 and 7 is boring because of Reki's stupid action.

Vol 9 it good again because of the battle with Hirudo. Riko nearly died from battle (from poison). The "last" moments between her and Kinji is really touching. Through very long battles all her life, she has finally found salvation and a peace of mind.

My favourite character is Aria, but the romance between her and Kinji needs to be a little bit faster!! My second favourite character is Riko cause her story is the best out of all other characters and her struggle in getting rid of her fear and her past is what makes this story outstanding.

I wish the author touches more on Hidan and the power of Hidan. Aria need to use her power more often and stuff.

lets just say after you shot it, the area between the thumb and pointer feels sore and your wrist is aching. this is if you continue to shoot all seven bullets without stopping to aim properly.

a GPMG has a stand so the only thing that it can do is vibrate your whole arms but it wont make them THAT sore... unless you're carrying a high recoil MG or a SAW

if the Butei students are authorized to equip MG's (Shirayuki didnt have her katana thats why she went guns-a-blazin' at that time instead of choppy), then it would be Assault's Special Weapons Heavy Teams or something related to that

Plus a GMPG had a thing that can be put on your shoulder. I'm not good at guns but when I look at the picture. It's like the rifle type that you can rest on your shoulder to support the recoil as for Desert Eagle. The whole impact will be absorb by your hands and elbow to shoulder but mostly your hands will probably feel the full blunt of it.

I'm fine with slow pacing, for the most part it's kept most of the important details in. I'd hate something like 5 novels crammed into 12 episodes. Also the fact that Sayanaki has appeared in both episodes despite not appearing until volume 3 makes me think that volume is where they want to end on.

I agree with the timeline for the episodes though, looking forward to Kinji landing the plane.

About the novel translations though, Sherlock really doesn't strike me as someone who has committed crimes and murders though, he seems like everything he's done has basically been to protect the Hidan thing, including taking over EU. "We guided Aria into EU. However, if she's not qualified--which means, weak, we'll kill her and find another leader. That is the conviction of those in Daio."

I think they framed Kanae so Aria would go after EU. They know she would go after them to save her mother. If she didn't pass the trials EU put to her, they'll kill her. If she did, they have a way to convince her to take EU's leader position.

Yeah. Next episode, people might change their view to Aria (or lighten their opinion at least), since not only character development, but that's also where she'll be more soft in her tsun attitude like thanking Kinji and commenting how he looked cool surrounded by everyone like you said.

I'm not sure how they'll handle the pacing for the busjacking. But they might rush it (I'm still doubtful why they left out the key plot of Riko destroying Kinji's watch last episode). Well, they just have to show how Aria took the hit instead of Kinji, and they can just go straight to the hospital after that.

I was thinking he's hiding something similar to HSS traits, and kinda like he's keeping it a secret for a reason (just like Kinji) and avoiding getting intimate on a girl because it was a trigger to activate it. Whatever the case, he's fishy to me. I felt the same vibes from him as I got from Tsuchimikado. He must be hiding something. Muto is an idiot so he's kinda like Aogami Pierce in Index.

Seeing that you really like Reki, I recommend ExE and play Natsuki route. They have a lot of similarities. Well, she doesn't have Dragunov though. Otherwise, Noble Works is good. If you prefer light-hearted theme with a good story, that's the best one I can recommend you.

Seeing that you really like Reki, I recommend ExE and play Natsuki route. They have a lot of similarities. Well, she doesn't have Dragunov though. Otherwise, Noble Works is good. If you prefer light-hearted theme with a good story, that's the best one I can recommend you.

one of the longest? you haven't seen denyuden yet. It had 11 volume and 11 side story volume just for prologue.

Index story is just starting to shape up when 3 heroes meet up with each other in new testament but still that doesn't make the 22 and 2 side story prologue.

Hidan no Aria's prologue to story isn't really that long. Though it's true it did 4 and half volume to introduce the premises of magic/ability and superman beings. But really kinji would need a diamond handcuff because chotei handcuff wouldn't work on him. He is like zoro without devil fruit so sea stone wouldn't work on him.

There's one line actually that confuses me.

Kinji just randomly mentioned random famous sword names and Sherlock was like "Ohh!? Nice deduction there buddy. +1 Ren to you".
And then Kinji said this line:

Can be: Sherlock really believes it was the name of the sword but he was actually deceived, or Sherlock was playing along with Kinji (he's being random too like Kinji),

They use the romanji too of the move then with a () or [] the english translation of it. Like a translation note or something. I figured it was because he was her childhood friend and that he took her out of the shrine that one time. Stuff like that. The Hotogi Shrine seems to be a very repressive environment so Shirayuki probably really latched on emotionally to what Kinji offered.
