I have to admit, I feel twice shy about MF after ZnT...

Quite expected. The real question is: Is it out of the top 10? Most likely it is.

We have candidates like Rokka, Kono Koi, Harem Baseball, Overlord, Escape Speed, Imouto Sae, Seishun Buta, 35th Platoon, Hai Grimgal, Mahouka, StB, Kiniro Quartet...and that's not considering the other new works that came out this year.

I'm expecting Rokka and Kono Koi to remain in the top 10, but tall order for Index to remain there. (even baka test fell off quite hard to the late 10s after its peak)

I haven't been reading SAO for a while, so I won't comment on it.
I'm caught up with Oregairu and I would rank it like between 4-8 probably for this year's volumes. It probably took the crown because of public poll skew, which makes it a boring outcome. My opinion.

Interested to know what the collaborators are supporting this year.

I just caught up with Gamers by Aoi Sekina, author of Seitokai no Ichizon. It's downright hilarious and I would bet a FGO summoning ticket that it will be well ranked in the "New series list".

I'm surprised Index managed to stay in the top 10 this year. This year (NT11-13) was a comparatively cold year for the franchise. Reception for those novels was far more mixed compared to NT8-10. Kamachi seems to struggle with keeping the momentum gained from the end of a long story arc. But if Index is 7th, what happened to Mahouka/Danmachi/NGNL/Overlord/Rokka?

Index is a thing of the past, I don't even follow it anymore for the last 3 years or so :heh: I honestly don't believe there can be 'quality' with so many simultaneous titles and at such a fast schedule.
Anyway, I can't seem to follow long series these days. Other things demand my attention. Only Daiden is the exception, with sporadic releases, and I can read a volume in well under 3 hours normally. :heh:

Well despite what we may feel, the current 'in' thing right now is that particular type of wish fulfillment fantasy, it's partly why Mahouka, Overlord and Gate is as big as they are.

On hindsight, Kirito isn't really as bad.

This is not with reference to any specific title, but just saying this here for now, before we see massive derailing take place.

I think it's fine to comment on impressions and form own opinions based on either facts or just hearsay.

But be careful of making an impression and opinion sound like a factual assertion, especially about a series which one does not have intimate factual knowledge outside of anime, summaries, and spoilers. Interpretations of course may differ. But strong assertions may attracted unwanted derailing. Just saying :heh:

To answer the three above, I feel the same about MF bunko J as you, but the last time they gave their support to a MF bunko J title (last year) , that was for Zetsushinkai no Solaris. And Zetsushinkai no Solaris is definitely VERY different from the usual MF bunko J title. And while I don't think it deserved as much support from the collaborator as it did (but then again imo last year was very very poor in new good works so they didn't had a lot of choice either ?) it's pretty fine, and I don't regret buying and reading it. Especially the second volume was quite promising compared to the first one (although they ranked it for the first volume last year, and it seems like they aren't supporting it this year even though the second volume was better. Well, this year has titles like shuumatsuna, so it can't be helped). So while I usually avoid MF bunko J titles, I would be cautious before rejecting something from that label if it's pushed by the collaborators. I think that on the contrary, when they find something very different in a specialised label like that, ti's also part of their job to attract the attention of the readers, basically saying "ey look, this one is different so don't avoid it just because of the specialized label".

I disagree. Anyone can take the stats from the voters and make that ranking anyway since they release the different stats. A popularity only would be as boring as the character popularity polls here. Who would want that? We already have that kind of stuff everywhere anyway. The whole point of having the voters have their favourite work compete directly with the works pushed by the collaborators is that those works will get far more attention from the public by competing with the popular title directly than having a separate poll.
Also, I don't know about Eirun, but do you have any better new title to push than shuumatsuna in mind? If so that I'd like to hear it. Because AFAIK, they did very well. And pushing Alderamin is defintiely not wrong either.

i'd really love for some hamazura representation; but it really seems he doesn't mix well with the japanese audience i.e. hamazura as a character seems to be the exact opposite of kirito and similarly the popularity seems to be polarised (i'll have to use the kirito comparision more often; it's actually pretty spot on)

I noticed that last year as well. I guess the character rankings for Tatsuya and Miyuki are just fine barring the Accelerator anomaly. But its just strange that a series that currently sells about twice as much copies per new volume as Index does performs worse than it. Even weirder in a year with multiple well received novels.

She is basically an even more OP version of Kurumi Tokisaki, that was expected of the character who carries the series.

Why? I'm not following durarara anime or light novel so I don't know why. Last time I heard from the novel is when dollars important members are quitting.

What happen?
Durara and Durarara SH are stories in the same town but with different main characters with occasional cameos of the original cast(I'm still mad that Mikado got blue balled)
At the end of Durarara author put Izaya on a bus.
His replacement on SH is well written but not as interesting as Izaya was, just that.

I don't think it's that shocking. Reception wasn't as mixed as made out and the only one that really could stick out was one volume but it wasn't that bad either searching from my end.

Anyways, A little sad ZW didn't even make Top 60 and that Yahari dominance. Good to see DanMachi and Saekano in the top 10. That makes me happy. Wasn't expecting Megumi though?

Actually, among readers Ais was as much as popular or more than Hestia and it helped her having her own spin off series. It was the anime the skyrocket her character.

I just edited my previous posts, a polarized fanbase is weaker fanbase compared to others, and that was happening way before the anime.

I made that comparison because Kurumi's ranked even when the novel wasn't known much though she is more a recurring character than a main.

I disagree. Anyone can take the stats from the voters and make that ranking anyway since they release the different stats. A popularity only would be as boring as the character popularity polls here. Who would want that? We already have that kind of stuff everywhere anyway. The whole point of having the voters have their favourite work compete directly with the works pushed by the collaborators is that those works will get far more attention from the public by competing with the popular title directly than having a separate poll.

Also, I don't know about Eirun, but do you have any better new title to push than shuumatsuna in mind? If so that I'd like to hear it. Because AFAIK, they did very well. And pushing Alderamin is defintiely not wrong either.

My post was mostly on the critic of the system for the most part.

For me it's less about the end result and rather the intention. I am fine with lesser known titles getting pushed, but only if they're truly interesting. Eirun does not seem like such a title to me (could glance at reviews, almost all terrible), where it is the total opposite for SukaSuka. Putting Eirun on there seem to invalidate their other efforts (and it's obvious that MF Bunko J's so heavily pushing this title), kinda like having a tiny piece of rat manure in a bowl of soup (ruins everything).

I do not blame collaborators having an agenda in mind, because this is their job. However, if they want to push a title, that title will get pushed. HP obviously is the mob mentality, so you are correct that their vote should have less weight, but Monitors are different. The fact for the top 10, collaborators have 2.5x the Monitor's weight does not sit well with me.

If I remember correctly, ever since they change the weighting system people give less and less attention to this publication (less votes too).


Whether I give it a chance or not, depends on what kind of comments appear in the mag :heh:

Hestia was not ranked last year, but Ais was (http://i.imgur.com/oBerTrB.jpg). Ais beat her again this year despite having extremely limited presence in the anime and in the current novels. I'd say while the anime was successful on its own, the staff managed to completely alienate the novel readers.

A surprisingly good showing from the Kamachi series. While it's a shame that Zashiki Warashi couldn't rank in the Top 60 this year, it pretty nice seeing characters and illustrators from Kamachi's other series rank highly.

As a way to counteract repetitive entries in the top 10, I'm thinking that series/characters that regularly rank at the top should be placed in a 'Hall of Fame' of sorts and excluded from the rankings afterwards. Index, SAO and Oregairu seem to fit the bill of entering in the Hall of Fame. It gets kinda boring if there's complete dominance for more than 2 years in a row.

it's good sign for blood sign (no pun intended :heh:), the story itself hasn't reach any impactful moment yet , but the characters gave a modal for being popular and in this character poll they are really a dark horse if you remember how hard to get a rank in character poll for a newcomer nonetheless, it's just kamachi trying to use an orthodox modern trope of OP mc and yandere heroine with his own style, i hope if it will become an anime it's not too hard to adapt. :heh:

If I were to do summaries for the series, I can probably do it with just relationship charts from the perspective of each character after each chapter. Just thinking of that makes me laugh :heh:

For me, a story with a serious plot would be always be remembered by how beautifully it was executed.

While I tolerate and read harem and humor or SoL stuffs. I just read them when I'm bored and not doing anything. Just to entertain myself but by the end of the day or by tomorrow. I would probably be forgetting it which is why I'm not much of a fan for romcom stories.

My post was mostly on the critic of the system for the most part.

For me it's less about the end result and rather the intention. I am fine with lesser known titles getting pushed, but only if they're truly interesting. Eirun does not seem like such a title to me (could glance at reviews, almost all terrible), where it is the total opposite for SukaSuka. Putting Eirun on there seem to invalidate their other efforts (and it's obvious that MF Bunko J's so heavily pushing this title), kinda like having a tiny piece of rat manure in a bowl of soup (ruins everything).

I do not blame collaborators having an agenda in mind, because this is their job. However, if they want to push a title, that title will get pushed. HP obviously is the mob mentality, so you are correct that their vote should have less weight, but Monitors are different. The fact for the top 10, collaborators have 2.5x the Monitor's weight does not sit well with me.

If I remember correctly, ever since they change the weighting system people give less and less attention to this publication (less votes too).

I understand your point of view, but ImO this would be worse if they separated it. Less peoples would care about the titles in mind. The balance needs to be conserved though. If the collaborators can push too easily any title they want in the top 5, that's not good either. ImO right now their voting power is a bit too high and need tweaking. Especially if they have the leniency of pushing a bad title (if like you said Eirun isn't good).

Still, I don't think that one badly pushed title invalidate their effort to promote the good ones either. I mean lots of "bad" (subjectively) titles are already in the top 10 thanks to the other groups of voters anywya, one more or one less doesn't really change anything. Although, if it's really the usual stuff from MF bunko J, then there was no reason that this becomes the number 1 new series over shuumatsuna either ImO. They should remember their priorities if they want to stay credible to their readers. As you said, we can understand that they have their own agenda/circumstances but if they lose the interest from their readers by going too far, this will not end good for them either.

Either way, I'd say that the titles they voted for this time seems to be mostly good choices. Leaving Eirun aside. If they wanted to promote a MF bunko J title that deserved it, Zetsushinkai no Solaris was deserving it for his second volume published this year more than the one for which they promoted that series last year, so it's not like they didn't had possibilities.

Looking at the front part of the hair and your alias, it looks like it's Aikawa Jun (I'm currently reading the zaregoto series, 5/9 read), but she looks awfully young on the pic, + this doesn't look like the usual art style of the zaregoto illustrator either. What's the volume/series it's from?



Zeyfris said what new LN series would I want to see this year on this list somewhere back but if I could, I'd want to see Ken to mahou no fantasy by Romeo Tanaka, Hajimaranai Ragnarok to Owatteru Uchira no Live by Ou Jackson or fate prototype by Hikaru sakurai or Tamakou Shakou Dance-bu e Yokoso by senya mihagi. I hear they are pretty good

Yeah it's definitely better. And the team as it is in the end of the volume is promising for the next volume imo. I wasn't much a fan of the first volume btw. Too much death in too little time to appreciate most of those characters. Well the two who died because of Madara were nice though.

BTW those madara types are the sickest type of Unders by far ImO. When one is around, that's really true despair for the water users. Talk about a nightmare. Those things are nasty.

There is no Ecchi at all btw, and no harem either. There's a small bit of romance but it's better that way since when a character die, well if that character was part of the romance the weight of the death will be far heavier.

One thing I'm cautious about taking monitor group into my consideration is the age group. All the series I love got zero or very low votes from them.

The point system remained the same as previous 2 years, which is supposed to reflect the following:
HP (homepage): what's popular now
Collaborators: good praiseworthy series to watch out for
Monitor: what teenagers/adolescents are reading now

Notable things (below comments represent only my opinion):
- Index got 0 points from collaborators haha; I forgot what they got for last year.
- SAO got votes from collabs, I'm not surprised because Alicization arc, setting-wise at least, is actually pretty good
- top 3 of collabs group got zero from monitor and very low from HP group, which shows why I have reason to believe HP is dominated by animefags who don't even read book reviews :heh:
- everyone gets 5 votes only, so if a person has 10 series he wants to vote for, he can only choose 5, which can explain why some of the notable series may not even show up.
- one of the most hyped tensei series (mushoku) didn't even make it; I'd like to believe that even monitor group are able to be discerning enough to not vote for it :heh: Don't know for sure of course :heh:

Since collabs agree with me that Alderamin is Da Best, I'll definitely read sukasukasuka, and probably give eirun a chance as well :heh:

Meh too bad Index dropped in ranking. NT 14 happened too late to make much of a difference. :( Hopefully next year it'll improve again. Though it was nice to see Othinus on a list of favorites even after NT 9/10 were over and done with.

Iroha got pushed as f**k tho. Like compared to other side characters and even some main ones. It always felt like she was there even if her characters wasn't needed at that point. I'm sure if other side characters got the same push, they'd be more popular as well.

And yeah I agree that the author definitely didn't do Yukino's characters any favour whatsoever, so no wonder she lost a lot of votes. And given the relative push of Iroha vs Yui, its not that surprising that she was on top of Yui.

Most of her development was in parallel to Hachiman's development, so I'm not sure how you can think she wasn't relevant. When Hachiman stuffed votes for the council (and in turn, hurt his relationship with Yukino), that was for Iroha.

When Hachiman was struggling to organize the Christmas festival, that was at Iroha's request. Volume 9 was the major turning point for Hachiman's character as well, where Iroha had a major role.

I question what you believe Oregairu's focus is to begin with. Considering how either awkward or downright spiteful Hachiman is towards people, including himself, becoming geniune friends is a huge accomplishment for him. The series has always been about how Hachiman, Yukino, and Yui mature to be able to accept develop lasting, "genuine" relationships.
Iroha may not have much to do with Yukino, but when it came to Hachiman's issues with trying to shoulder every responsibility on his own, her problems with the student council were what led Hachiman to question his old methods of trying to shoulder the responsibility alone and finally start asking others for guidance.

Also, Iroha has had plenty of development hinting that while she was trying to win over Hayama, she is still steadily growing closer to Hachiman. Even if realistically she can't compete with Yukino or Yui, she has had plenty of development that readers can grow to like about her.

It's also pretty damn telling how major of a character she is with how often she shows up in the Service Club room despite not being an official member :heh:

THe story is about the relationship of the three main characters, and their growth together. In there, there is no Iroha. As I said, Iroha's role is merely a plot device. I think it's pretty disingenuous to selectively dissect a character to claim the person is irrelevant while their actions are. Unlike say... Yukino's mother, Iroha has a distinct personality that grows and changes through frequent, direct interaction with the main cast. If that doesn't make her an important character, then what does?
What's stopping you from saying Yui is irrelevant, other than her role as Yukino's friend and rival?
Only Iroha could interact with Hachiman the way she does, and get him to react to her the way he does. Expecting an entirely different character like Haruno, or Shizuka, or Yumiko to act the way she does not work.

Also needless to say, but obviously all those people who voted for her don't believe her to be an irrelevant character who is nothing more than a plot device. There are also no rules stating that only main characters are eligible to be voted as well.

Let's be honest, I'm happy for the author. But I'm not really going to say well-deserved (I don't know if it's just me being salty, but I don't really have a stake in any horse here) mainly because I find this year's contest to be relatively weaker compared to prior years (lesser renowned names out there now). It's like...the shelf life of LNs is really wearing out. Kinda feel melancholic (okay, yes, I'm getting older), you get what I mean?

Chess LN got no.1 for the LN format. Overload's printed down the tankabon format, and won no.1 under that category. Well, if you see the actual Overlord hard copy, you'll see that it's bigger than an ordinary LN, so I think they made a separate category out of it.

I think the monitor votes got combined into the collab vote this year.

To quote myself (For those who don't know how the scoring works)

総合 in this case is the combined total. Since 2011 to 2016, the total would contain three segments, but this year, it contains only two. There also used to be a 'monitor' points

HP is the public vote, fan voting from the readers, tabulated together. Series with huge fan popularity typically score well for this, like Index, SAO, but for some reason, Oregairu isn't in this vote.

協力者 is the collab vote. It used to be in two different categories, a 協力者 with different definitions, and a monitor vote. This time, the votes are combined together. Such votes are usually from those in the industry, like fellow authors, promotional staff, or those looking to adapt series. Series like Alderamin and Rokka in the past used to gain lots of votes under these categories, partially to increase the exposure.


For the characters, the first number refers to the total voting points. The second number refers to the total number of votes. (I couldn't see the figures clearly though)

Oregairu doesn't get a mention because there's no volume release this year.

This sold like 500 copies from a single shop at one point, which is pretty big I think. I actually really wanted to read Babylon since the writer is Nozaki Mado (he is scripting an original anime (https://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=139300) for next year!!! HYPE), who's very awesome. Once again, however, is anything from Kodansha Taiga consider LN??? The stunning covers (imho) sparked my interest no doubt, and the description is fascinating.

These three stood out to me!

45 for obvious reason (https://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=5865009#post5865009), but I do believe #33 got several reprints (https://twitter.com/sakomoko/status/772731993901502464) and was generally "received very well". This sold like 500 copies from a single shop at one point, which is pretty big I think. Is this really a light novel though, kinda hilarious cause there is this too (https://twitter.com/sakomoko/status/789352794008322048).


I actually really wanted to read Babylon since the writer is Nozaki Mado (he is scripting an original anime (https://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=139300) for next year!!! HYPE), who's very awesome. Once again, however, is anything from Kodansha Taiga consider LN??? The stunning covers (imho) sparked my interest no doubt, and the description is fascinating.

I don't think HP and collab are given same weightage unless they changed it.
And monitor group seems to be removed rather than merged. It won't make sense to merge them with collab since their vote distribution is quite different. For the more popular series, Monitor group tends to follow HP trends more and may not really serve much of a purpose; their taste as adolescents despite having read 51 books or more are similar to the general public. This is my opinion. I guess the magazine will state the details of their changes though I'm not getting the mag this year since I'm mostly out of touch and don't feel like picking up a lot of new stuff to read.

Ryuuou is great read especially for my taste but seems over-pushed. Or maybe the later volumes are just that great I'm not sure since I'm not caught up. Or maybe it was over-pushed because there isn't much notable new stuff to push. I don't like having a loli disciple to add to the shuraba, but I guess it needs to have some generic popular element to stay 'relevant'; great stories that don't have some kind of pandering or cliche element can never become popular with majority of otakus it seems (I think).

What makes Ryuuou a lot better than No-rin is not really just the research and the fact that it receives editorial supervision from a Kansai pro shogi unit (baring some similarities to the setting), but that the characters are really more interesting, and there is a 'battle element' in the story on top of a 'coolness' factor; these 3 areas are severely lacking or even absent in No-rin (again my opinion). The humour can be a hit or miss though. I'm shocked that not even the manga is scantalated.

I've been following Gangan GA channel (because I like to watch/hear seiyuu personality hosts) since early this year and that's where I learned about Ryuuou. The LN, manga, and drama CD (with considerable star power; at least I know all the seiyuus in it) were all launched at the same time as part of GA's 10-year anniversary campaign. One thing about GA group in recent years is that they have really upped their promotional and marketing efforts by quite a few notches. I would say they have even more presence than Kadokawa subs in my radar. I even bought a number of new series from GA because of their marketing, but unfortunately they were around average and some I hadn't even finished the first volumes (and may be prejudging).

RE:Zero is likely going to get stronger with upcoming arcs in LN format, the LN version also manages to polish the original WN reasonably well (wrt style, dialogue, prose, redundant and meaningless developments imo :heh:). I hope the LN continues to make smart condensation of some stuff, because the arcs are getting ridiculously longer and longer and if it continues, I doubt I'd have the energy and attention span to follow it anymore. I used to love this kind of pattern but no longer :heh:

As for the big 3 of Dengeki, I've stopped reading them completely. I think Kawahara's story-telling is still good and the best among the 3, but I can't find the time ever since I fell behind for SAO and can't be bothered really. Mahouka writer made 2 big lies and I gave up on it after the feeling of being cheated; the detailed setting is still amazing to me and the biggest attraction factor to me and I would still regard it as the best detailed setting among everything I've read despite having dropped it. As for Index, I just felt it became a yawn-fest for me at some point in time, and can't seem to follow it anymore. I guess I just prefer either light-hearted stuff or newer kind of story/developments. Purely my opinion and based on own preference.

As for the big 3 of Dengeki, I've stopped reading them completely. I think Kawahara's story-telling is still good and the best among the 3, but I can't find the time ever since I fell behind for SAO and can't be bothered really. Mahouka writer made 2 big lies and I gave up on it after the feeling of being cheated; the detailed setting is still amazing to me and the biggest attraction factor to me and I would still regard it as the best detailed setting among everything I've read despite having dropped it. As for Index, I just felt it became a yawn-fest for me at some point in time, and can't seem to follow it anymore. I guess I just prefer either light-hearted stuff or newer kind of story/developments. Purely my opinion and based on own preference.

I blame two things: (1) there's only one volume counted for Index, which is NT18, and (2) fanbase complacency—fans already had their victory with the sudden upsurge of publicity through Season III, the Virtual-On game, and the mobile MMO. It's possible that they let the newer works take the fame because "Index already won".

Also, I noticed that none of the other series had the same popularity (i.e., not talked about as much) as the older LN series.

Index's ranking relies entirely on HP votes and last year it was lucky that Oregairu wasn't there to steal its votes. I'm very interested to see what the HP numbers are this year and if there was a different weighting method used. Index was first in HP votes last year and to see it drop to 10th is staggering. Normally I'd blame Oregairu but I don't see it ranked anywhere... Maybe Classroom took the votes?

Kono LN ga Sugoi! looks at novels released in the October to September period each year. Index had 2 novels during this time: one meh and one amazing. But this has actually been one of Index's best years story-wise.
