A portion of the forum keeps talking about it here and there but it's been around for more than a few months and has become so popular that I think it's about time there was a thread just about this. I hope this is fine by the mods and I don't get blastinated for making a topic...

Anyway, for anyone who doesn't know it's a Japanese-only video streaming site that's unusual in that you can write comments that appear on the video itself and playback with the video at the moment you write the comment. So for example if a funny scene happens at 2:07, I can write "LOLOLOLOLOLOL" at 2:07 and next time anyone comes to watch it, at 2:07 they will see that comment scroll across the screen over the video (there's a limit to how many comments get displayed at one time though, older ones fade away and can't be seen). It originally started off as simply a method of overlaying comments on videos from YouTube, but YouTube asked them to stop it so they closed for a while and reopened with videos either from their video uploader (SmileVideo), AmebaVision or Photozou.
Membership is free but people who want to upgrade to a paid system can do so and enjoy more colours to write comments in, more uploading and favourites-list space, and a dedicated connection line to the site. Niconico Douga also has affiliation with amazon.co.jp such that a video can have related goods listed under it and people can buy through it (the number who do gets reflected after some time).

The site can be accessed at http://www.nicovideo.jp . The parent company is dwango which, I think, counts Hiroyuki Nishimura (the so-called founder of 2ch) as one of its key members.

Because of this commenting system it's helped build a particular kind of culture at the site. I'd say it's still mostly populated by bored anime/game otaku, but there are other obscure things you might find there too. It's already got its hordes of memes and specialised words (especially through famous "sora-mimi", namely misheard words from videos - like TETSUKO instead of Let's Go), and some fads are said to have become popularised because of niconico - the recent Hatsune Miku phenomenon (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=54410) is a good example. You might say a lot of it is rather insular - like the endless iterations of the fan-made "Niconico Symphony" which is a medley of popular tunes among fans on the site, but current events and stuff get to the top of the rankings too (like the recent fuss over Sawajiri Erika). Of course, since the site became fully open to the public there are many concerns that the rankings list is engineered by fans who keep re-entering a video into their favourites list...

But I really wanted to start a thread because right now it's down for upgrading from version RC to RC2, and I read this pdf (http://info.niwango.jp/pdf/press/2007/20071010.pdf) about the new features. There's some serious additions, about as big as the the time they added a paid service. For example, they now allow the video creator to delete comments off their video, block comments containing a certain word or even block certain users from writing comments. This is a huge change! I don't think I can get used to it yet.

More importantly I read that they're planning on releasing a Taiwanese version of the site on the 19th of October. WTF?! Is it going to work? Is it going to get flamed and spammed to no end? It's very interesting but I wonder how well it'll work, honestly... and whether the Niconico model will work when expanded to a much larger audience, especially since IMO the Japanese internet users tended to be rather separated from a good part of the world due to language barriers.

I'm also very interested in how some Japanese companies are taking interest in really partnering with the site to provide streaming contents rather than going on ZOMG COPYRIGHT VIOLATION DELETEZ0R blitzes. Already one current (?) anime, Saishuu Shiken Kujira, is being legally aired on Niconico. But adding onto the fact that
a. the site can support long and relatively good-quality videos
b. the comments make it very fun to watch
c. people are more likely to respond by creating fan-made parodies/videos/etc
d. it's becoming harder to air certain things on TV (...maybe?)
I think it only makes sense to let more anime be legally aired on Niconico. Already every new episode of anime seems to get uploaded there illegally anyway... And I've always hoped for an internationally-accessible anime streaming site, all the better if it's got fun comments. So I'm looking forward to see how this develops. (although considering there were all those problems with Youtube, I wonder why they get all enthusiastic when it's a Japanese site...)

I'm sure other people on this forum do watch videos on the site, so does anyone have anything to say about it? Even if it's not about the upgrade. I want to talk about it, but in English! :(

EDIT: By the time I finished typing it had finished upgrading. LOL. BRB, I'm going to see how it works out!

While I love the site content, I dislike one or two of its technical issues. First, the low-quality flag that's raised for non-premium users when there are traffic overhauls. In those times the video turns to pixelated mush and audio to something crappier than 96 kbps mp3 (oh, the horrors watching IM@S videos in that D|). And second is the fact that foreign credit card accounts (not even Visa's, MasterCard's) cannot be used for paying the premium service, which guarantees you fast, dedicated streaming without the low-quality flag. Yes, it's the kind of service I'd gladly pay for... but can't. ;-; The video loading times are that annoying sometimes, yes.

Oh yeah, I really hate that Economy mode thing - I might as well watch the videos on Youtube rather than watch videos in that mode. And they always take longer to load for me. Some things are just unwatchable... it's fine if it's time-based but it was frustrating when they had it on the whole day on Saturdays and Sundays. The only thing I watch is Dennou Coil on Saturday evenings and it's a matter of loading it as soon as it's uploaded because 10 minutes later it becomes premium mode, and the worst is when it loads halfway and then stops. -_- Does it really reduce the server load that much?

I have a friend who got completely hooked onto the site but is similarly annoyed at the fact that it doesn't accept foreign credit cards so he could sign up as a premium member for a month just to try out. If they intend to expand this overseas I hope they fix this. Not like I can pay for it just yet...

I had thought of starting a thread myself, but it is exactly this issue that I was hesitant to do so. It is indeed a thorny issue. My take is that some of the studios probably turn a blind eye on it if the upload of raws help them advertise their work for free.

Apart from that, yes, it's definitely a fun thing to have a niconico account. The quality is so much better than YouTube and the comments system makes it feels as though you're watching with a lot of people, thus accurately getting the sentiment of the majority of viewers.

My account no. is 12*****. Back when I registered in April, there was a limit on the number of users that were allowed to access on all times to save bandwidth. That limit was between user accounts 0-1000000. So it was frustrating trying to wait for the right time to get in (usually after midnight).

It wasn't until a few months later that they expanded the limit so now my account falls within this range, and since then, there's no turning back.

So anyone can overlay commments on the video, huh? Never use it but does that mean you can overlay subtitles so to fansub it? This could be the fastest way to fansub anime, although I have no idea how fast the raw comes out on this site.

Yes. You commonly see lyrics and translations and other things related to the audio pasted on videos everywhere. Or just a lot of people screaming the same thing at one time till you can't see the video screen. There's a similar service at this site called jimaku.in, where some people added Japanese subtitles to youtube videos or something I think. This would, as you say, be the fastest way to fansub anime but it's not reliable until they offer an option to let the owner lock publicly-viewable comments such that they can't get overlaid with other comments or disappear over time. And the problem is you won't know who's doing it.

The raws there can be pretty fast compared to Some Methods especially for Less Appreciated Shows, but I won't go into too much detail...

@Chama: Wow! Thanks so much for that link - there's actually a blog out there talking about all the "niconico neta". This is definitely something I'm saving to my bookmarks so I can share it with other people who don't get them initially. :D *subscribes*

@Kinny Riddle: Yeah, I find it so strange when the exact same clips will get deleted off Youtube in the blink of an eye but they stay so long on Niconico douga, and in pretty awesome quality without being split up too. :eyebrow: Well, I won't comment on any possibility of double standards but just embrace it as a Good Thing and hope even more hard-headed studios like Sunrise/Bandai (when it comes to copyright matters) will eventually tie up with Dwango or something. Seeing multiple copies of Gundam00 populating the rankings list the day it airs I know that whatever anyone says, this trend isn't going to stop just like that.
(I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules here)

So with you on the "no turning back" thing though. It's such a huge waste of time but it's addictive. I hardly watch Youtube now. I remember nearly skipping when I got 24h access, although I'm still a relatively new number (45****) I wasn't there during the so-called legendary Beta period and all :heh:

Some people complain about how the site is now overrun with stupid kids who don't know quality and will blindly "engineer" any bland and fan-pandering moe thing to the rankings but hey, I'm so used to seeing that all over the net that I just ignore half of them (but there's some pretty hilarious stuff there sometimes, in recent memory there was that Let's Go Kusuriuri MAD and earlier the Death Note x Sazae-san parody.)
Evidently I spend way too much time on this. In before "lol weeaboo".

True. Just look at 2ch Saimoe to see how some (NOT ALL, let me emphasize) are hostile to gaijins. The only thing that a foreign niconico user can post safely without attracting any attention is "www"(multiple "w"s). This is the Japanese equivalent to "lol" or "roflmao". "w" stands for "warai", which means "laugh".

Well, yeah... Nico nico douga is NOT meant to be international, it's aimed for the Japanese audience. So having illegible unreadable comments spam across the screen is going to annoy the people watching them. Nico nico isn't youtube.

One or two comments may be fine, but spamming the entire episodes with unwanted subtitles is, well, unwanted.

Yeah, I always found it very weird and impolite when people put weird subtitles there and honestly noone cares. Exceptions are if it's like... a language learning program or someone wants lyrics to an English song. It's not like I hate foreigners getting into nicovideo - that's ridiculously hypocritical, considering I've introduced it to a handful of people - but it's just... painful.

Nearly all of my comments are completely innocuous and don't seem to look recognizably foreign (just simple sentences or "作者 GJ" or wwwww or something) so thank goodness for that, I was really afraid of posting comments at first.

Either way I'm glad that there still isn't too much in the way of unwanted foreign comments (there's more than enough of Japanese spam/flaming comments anyway). I guess the Japanese interface is what's blocking most foreigners from easily accessing the site, not the signup restrictions. However I'm still ambivalent about niconico having overseas versions - it's a great idea and I can't say I wouldn't want to see international versions of it, but niconico itself? I dunno, some part of me is just kinda worried whether the way of doing things will translate well into other cultures.

Whooooo Rick Astley, Love This Guy!:D It's odd because I was just listening to this song on Youtube the other night for the first time in ages. There's basically this curse (if you can call it that) that what ever old 80's song they never play on the radio anymore I listen to on my own time, will suddenly pop up everywhere I go. Can do without the pointless comments though, but isn't this more or less what most Niconico videos are like, pointless comments.

All I know are three things about the new Niconico

1. It's buffers a hell of a lot faster now
2. I now finally know what all the wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww~ comments mean
3. I could care less about what some of the Japanese users think about me for being white, I'll still browse the website just as I please and if they want to freak out like small children than that will speak of their character.

Really?! Half of the videos I try to watch - even if they're not popular ones - keep timing out on me! It's so frustrating... Load, dammit :( They were perfectly fine before the RC2 upgrade as well. This is the 20th time I'm trying to load this video and it still times out...

I don't think they care about you being white, it's just when really stupid comments happen then it's a problem. Nobody knows or cares who's watching the videos...

For some reason, I've been locked out of NicoNico. It was fine only hours ago.Nico nico has limited server size, so only users with certain ID #s can log in 24 hours a day. I see that your ID is pretty high, and I believe only up to 2200000 can log in 24 hours a day. Anyone above that is limited to access

My theory for that - Japan is already a very internet-integrated society and they've rather progressive when it comes to accepting net communities like 2ch into their popular culture. Compared with, the US for example, which is highly resistant to that sort of stuff, it opens up a lot more possibilities.

There's also the issue of the Japanese having "strong hobby convictions". Otakuism is serious business across the west pond and MoonTube, while seemingly a threat to profits through the proliferation of anime DVDs, could serve to simply be an advertising tool because of the static low quality (but better than YouTube quality) videos and otaku viewership.

None of that could fly over here, since Westerners don't have the same cultural dedication to certain hobbies those in the East do. I mean, how many main-stream fans purchase anime DVDs for what they watch...? Even the 4channers are more likely to penny up for a series even if they're not a die-hard for it.

True. Just look at 2ch Saimoe to see how some (NOT ALL, let me emphasize) are hostile to gaijins.

That was because SaiMoe isn't an international tournament yet gets international attention, and the Japanese were offended that the IT vote had so much sway in the tournment.

I'd direct everyone to SaiGar since it's the English equivalent to SaiMoe, but AnimeSuki and the ELC in general tends to eschew Gar quite a bit (much to my disgust and dismay >_>) in favour of the moe fetishes...which is quite sad, but that's the way it goes I guess. =/

The Japanese are very resistant to change and very resistant to making properties available on the internet. There are a large number of shows which are removed by request of the copyright holders on Nico. Kujira is more a test exception. It is also of note that Kujira is not constantly available. It is only available for a very short time period.

Whuh, they finally integrated the key changes into the niconico commenting system... Using tabs on the comment panel you - not just the uploader - can block certain comments, and even block the IDs of users themselves. Uploaders can create wordfilters for the comments. You can also see "recommended" videos (or is it more like the Youtube system where you can see related videos), and see who has put your video in their favourites list (if it's made public).

I don't quite mind the latter two, but I thought nico was still relatively OK without the filtering despite the burgeoning population. I guess it's because I don't watch that many insanely-popular videos now and usually if they're really annoying I just turn them off, filtering will just cause people to try harder wouldn't it...? Whatever it is, now I'm definitely scared to comment :{

Since most of the spammers use the same comment over and over, a simple filter should remove them all when you encounter it. There were already other ways to get around if it if you really wanted other comments beside theirs. (There were bugs with the hide comments button that you could exploit.) Also, that filter by user ID is a very nice touch since now everyone can filter out that idiot "benmei". But how are we supposed to find the user IDs for each comment?

wao
2007-10-18, 11:14
Meh, but when it comes to things like spoilers it's kind of pointless. And the point is those spammers used the same words again and again and again, but that's before there was a filter... you think they won't just find more new words/alternatives of words to get around it? I guess you'd just have to keep updating yoru filter.

You can find the IDs if you go to the comment listing and scroll horizontally; it's not immediately visible but at the extreme right side. I'm not sure whether older comments will revert back to the coded format or if those are just ones from before the change, but new ones will show your ID number. All those people commenting on their own videos, the 自演 folks had better be a little smarter...

Oh yeah, I just read http://gigazine.net/index.php?/news/comments/20071001_nicovideo_rights/ and...

am I allowed to say ニコニコ\(^o^)/オワタ or would people say it was "finished" at the time they started introducing premium services? Seeing the giant Youtube embarking on anti-copyright infringement technology implementations, and now this.. if I understand correctly they may actually be able to impose blanket situations where as long as a video matches up to certain terms, then they'll get deleted much faster.
The problem is when a great vast overwhelming majority of the stuff worth watchign on niconico is precisely either a. the copyrighted materials themselves (gameplay videos, music medleys, anime) or b. mash-up of copyrighted materials (MADs, parodies, doujin vids)

It would be perfectly wonderful and ideal if some of these companies would actually make niconico a legal way for them to distribute episodes and closed an eye at all the other stuff, but for the former: they'd rather do it on their own site with their own ads and own tracking of who watches what, and for the latter, when JASRAC comes a-knocking and people file lawsuits... :/ Especially I think for highly commercialized stuff like the Gundam works, MBS shows, definitely stuff involving celebs (hey, the JJ magazine couldn't publish pictures of its new cover with Takuya Kimura on their own website because they weren't allowed to  ) I noted how the page said that "users who use niconico as a sort of VCR to record stuff they couldn't watch realtime on TV will find it tough". Which is true. And also for greedy people like me who want to watch what's over there but quite obviously can't (I'd be really content if I could just watch each week's episode of Dennou Coil once a week in streaming format...)

I guess it was coming, though. When the new season rolls over and all you see on the rankings are half made up of unauthorised anime uploads in good quality, for an online society where illegal downloading is (as I see it) kept hush-hush and easily condemned, I could imagine some copyright holders seething and wanting something to be done. Bandai's Gundam 00, illegally uploaded on a popular site? Blasphemous!
But for that time at least, in an environment where copyright is so fervently respected (I think doujin manga are a bit different), it made some people think about what they'd really like and how technology poses a problem to some old mindsets.

...Well, I'll still keep coming for the cat videos ;-;

Summary: \(^o^)/

EDIT: Okay, strangely enough I can't see the user IDs of any comments anymore... now it works this way:
You can select your ID to be displayed as anonymous (a long number which probably changes after some time and between videos) = "184". Then to block actual users, you must first decide whether you want to show 184 comments or block them (so you can theoretically only show the comments of people who dare to reveal their actual IDs and can thus be identified and blocked across videos). To find out their ID, it's no longer in the comment window - you must click on the desired comment and then click "Add as NGID". Then you will see their ID - whether it's a long number or their actual ID.

Now this makes a lot, lot more sense. It's like filtering out all anon comments on a board, but more effective because there's a limit to how many accounts spammers can keep making to flood videos, and it's much faster to block them out.

Use the following:
http://www.nicopon.jp/js/smiledownloader.user.js
If you are using FireFox download Greasemonkey (http://www.greasespot.net/) extension then add the javascript file through Greasemonkey. For Opera just use UserJS already built in. With the niconico tab open, just right click on a blank area and select edit site preferences. Then just click on the scripting tab and select the folder where you put your javascript in. You should see a flv button when you view a video. Use that to save the flv once you finish downloading the video.

I did everything you said with Opera, but I don't see any FLV button. Where exactly is it supposed to appear. I set the path for User Javascript Files to my personal folder, but still no idea what to do next. Would you mind demonstrating with Screenshots?:(

Okay, I think I take back what I said about the NG system... it's actually really handy. Only used it once, but... it does help when it's the same idiot continuously writing the same rubbish and it actually does distract from the other comments. :/

Also, is it me or when they drastically cut down the number of viewable videos (by making a huge lot of old videos with low comments unviewable) loading times have become much more acceptable? During off-peak hours (w.r.t. JPT) it can be really good. None of that irritating timeout stuff, at least. And most videos I want to see are not out of those old ones... Great. :D

Well, AYB was a somewhat international thing thanks to the spread of English around the world and while the ultimate suckiness godliness of Cheetahmen II was known in the US before anywhere else, it was just ahead of its time and is now only experiencing a long awaited revival although it's just limited to within Japan.

Who knows how long the boom will last, although there are already tons of clips on it... you can find the good ones on youtube as well.

Personally my favourite is http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1372220 Cheetah Men II - Main theme vs Rene Ablaze - Autumn again (jason van wyk remix) ... I guess it's a foreign remix done some time ago. There's other nice remixes available which are done by non-Japanese from some time back.

Of course you have to expect them to make the usual anime-song mashups... and personally speaking I really LOL'd at Motteke Sailor Fuku: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1363698 (it's crazy how the beat fits) and the ingenious http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1361974 Marisa wa taihen na (etc) mix which actually has lags just like the original recording of it! Amazing.

I've never experienced that. The only times it doesn't work are the occasional times when the comments server cannot be reached and refreshing the page usually makes it work. Either that or when the stupid time announcement is playing. I've only heard that announcement very occasionally though... and it's very interesting in that they broadcast a 12:00 am announcement but not at 12:00 am JPT, but 12:00 am according to your own clock (BIOS clock I suppose?) So I hear it one hour later than most people there...

I think they even mentioned (not by name but just referring to) how people make IdolMaster videos and fill up the screen with red words during MAKKA NA CHIKAI and so on... well, I'm glad they actually don't mind people doing this even if it's copyright infringement. :D

You have to go to smilevideo.jp to upload stuff. Then click on the 新規の動画アップロード link (I think it says something like that). It takes some time to upload but don't go anywhere... it will say you're the #th person in line to wait for the system to process your stuff; then you wait for it to process (as always try uploading in .flv when possible, so they don't take eons to re-encode it) and you'll come to a screen where you can pick a thumbnail (randomly generated or input a time - the latter never worked for me), and write the title, description and put it in a tag category if you like.

I just read on the official blog: http://blog.nicovideo.jp/2007/11/post_201.php that, if I haven't misunderstood, there's an upcoming movie where the rights holders have very surprisingly decided to allow niconico users legal access to some footage from the movie so that they can create videos around it (I'm guessing MADs and the like) and upload it to niconico! Of course there's limitations; they say the offer can be stopped without notice and videos that damage the film or the actors' reputation or spoil the movie fall under deletion guidelines.

Still, wow - I think it's the first time I've heard about anything like that in the Japanese industry. Awesome, really awesome... legal MADs. Cool! I really hope to see more of this perhaps. It'll be really great to see more Japanese creators embracing this medium.

edit: Oh, and it's been some time since the Cheetahman boom was over but I cannot go without pasting the link to this amazing remix: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1477242

Wow I feel like I'm posting half the posts in this topic. :) But I just wanted to mention another landmark (?) in niconico's history, a recent series of popular videos that I actually like a lot:

MIDI anime!
MIDIs that are played through this music software called the Music Animation Machine (http://www.musanim.com) that display it in coloured bars. Not unlike music box scores, I think...

But what this guy did was to create pictures out of them. For example, continuing on the Cheetahman fad that was mentioned above, this guy did the themesong and then added "Cheetah!" and "BOSS ->" in words, and added ~ (supposed to be the worms snakes worms), and 勿 which was used by the users as a representation of Apeman, the pathetic final boss. (He looks like that kanji character, if you don't get it.)
And then he made music out of it, like this:

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=DLTRylm7QRU

He has made the following videos:
1. Cheetahman http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1415681
References mentioned up there.
2. Mario medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1430475
If you've played Mario you'll recognize the elements.
3. Kirby medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1458358
Stars, trains, "KIRBY", Kirby the character, what appears to be a boss character..
4. Okkusenman + Airman ga Taosenai http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1487881
"7" is because the popular versions' lyrics are those of Ultraman Seven.
レモン (lemon) is a pun off the "demo~" part in the lyrics, which sounded like レモン when sung by a popular niconico singer, Gomu (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm83) (notice it's one of the earliest videos on niconico)
The hurricanes are because of Airman.
5. FF4 medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1506976
Carrot, music notation, chocobo, Meteo... what else?
6. retro game medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1544163
Tetris, Doctor Mario, the Gradius games (notice the levels!), Donkey Kong and Pacman. Awesome!

And the best part is that the author of the Music Animation Machine software has talked about it here http://www.musanim.com/niconicodouga/ :) It's made my day! Talk about recognition, this makes me really happy for the video creators...

Well there's a number out there but personally I've just been using mencoder :) The maximum dimension of the normal window is 512x384 and you have 600kbps of combined (audio + video) bitrate... I think you can find some mencoder or ffdshow frontends out there, maybe that'll work. I heard those avi->flv transcoders like Riva don't do that good a job

To delete comments in your own videos, on the line below the tags next to two buttons there should be a red link 【コメント編集】. Then you tick the checkboxes next to the ones you don't want. I don't think it deletes them, rather it makes them invisible when you normally play the video (unless you are the owner?) so it allows you to un-delete them, sorta. Don't forget to click the 完了 button on the bottom right hand side of the video screen.

The NG system is different, you can use it on any video you like, either by telling it not to show all anonymous comments, or block certain users (if the user is going anonymously it'll block their hash, which changes after some time), or block by keyword. There's also a wordfilter option that you can use on videos you created.

Not long ago they unveiled new developments that were tested publicly - there's new commands that let you conduct surveys and it automatically tallies scores for you (say you ask "Do you like Mikuru (A), Haruhi (B) or Yuki (C)?" and respondents type in A, B, or C - there will be a live counter overlaid on the screen that tallies the results within a certain timeframe)
And another one that lets you cover the video in black except for a "window" which can be moved based on the user comments (type うえ and it goes up, etc) I don't really see the point of this.
Then there's one where if you type the correct phrase, you will get sent to another video (but you can create a wordfilter for that word so others don't guess what it is... although if you go to sites like nicosen I think you can see the words before they were filtered EDIT: I think it stopped working)
And finally they also showed a setting that disables commenting for the video (you'd wonder why they didn't have one all this time).

I don't know when they'll finally appear in actual videos or whether it's still limited to premium members or what...

Meh, I think it's not nearly as interesting as Cheetahman - it's actually playable and the only really funny part is the IIYAAAAAA scream when the guy dies. And it uses an existing classical piece as BGM! Cheetahman was a much worse game and that made it better material to be made fun of, IMO. :)

I find it amusing how around New Years' a lot of older videos resurfaced on the daily mylist rankings. I was happy to see the legendary Princess Tutu AMV, Håll Om Mig, up there. It really makes you want to watch the show... Actually, it kind of makes me smile to see foreign-made AMVs become popular on sites like niconico (I think it's safe to say Candy Pop made it into the side-annals of niconico history) - it reminds you that some things, like enjoying great AMVs, are the same no matter where you come from. :)

"Sonna no Kankei nee" (そんなの関係ねえ) Roughly means "So what?" Alongside "Dondake" (どんだけ - "WTF") has entered the Japanese lexicon due to its recent widespread usage. Hiiragi Tsukasa from Lucky Star comes to mind, as she's heard using both.

"Sonna no Kankei nee" was first made famous by a TV comedian called Yoshio Kojima.

Easily the best fan-made production I've ever heard so far on niconico, these guys know their anime and really put a lot of effort in combining that superbly with their talent with the guitar. Long ago, I used to play the Chrono Cross songs like mad on an acoustic as well, but my skills have faded since then.

Songs popular songs they played include (not in order): Suzumiya Haruhi (includes Character Albums), Clannad, Lucky Star (includes Character Albums), Higurashi, AIR, Chrono Cross, Lupin III, Hatsune Miku fansongs, and even the now infamous Cheetahman song.

dahl_moon, next time can you please include the link to the niconico video as well? I personally prefer to "watch with other people", if you get what I mean. Also, the niconico version provides a better quality sometimes.

Kirby's Gourmet Race? TBH that's the first time I've even seen that video myself, I haven't heard about it before. I guess it's a BGM they entered lyrics into...

or so I thought, but I remembered where I HAVE heard it! Just a few days ago there was a big hoo-hah in the daily rankings with this video called "atama ga PAAN☆" which was, I think, mocking Masami Hisamoto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masami_Hisamoto), a member of this national religious organization called the Soka Gakkai (http://louvinch.blogspot.com/2007/12/masami-hisamoto-is-member-of-ska-gakkai.html) which (afaik) many 2chers/netizens hate for secretly controlling the back of Japanese society or something along those lines (http://www.rickross.com/reference/gakkai/gakkai48.html). (Their presence is very wide. There's local schools/organisations run by them here in Singapore too!)

It doesn't help that any video which criticizes them and their leader Daisaku Ikeda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisaku_Ikeda) gets deleted pretty soon - which was what happened to the original atama ga PAAN video (as well as others like a kumikyoku with lyrics lampooning Soka Gakkai). So a myriad of people (or the same person w/ multiple accounts) started uploading many copies of the same video and they all got pushed into the rankings to kind of flip the bird at Sokka Gakkai. (Obviously, these got deleted)

The contents of the video were practically this very BGM, and then this believer/woman's words being synched to the music but most of it was just "atama ga PAAN" repeated with hand movements. (And I don't get why, but there was a comment filter changing "w" -> "┗(^o^)┓")

The video you linked, however, doesn't have any actual content related to Soka Gakkai so it hasn't been deleted but people know that it's the BGM for that video. This (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1998525) is the non-vocal version, look at the comments... and then look at the graveyard in the guy's mylist (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/4373472) :) pretty much all Soka Gakkai-related.

EDIT: I found a copy of the original video uploaded somewhere - http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2069632
It'll probably be deleted in a few days. I warn you, it is a really silly and annoying video. Now I've got her voice saying PAAN in my head all the time. Grr.

Oh yea I just asked my questions without commenting on the rest of the thread. I Think the guy with the music make spelling stuff out is no less than a demi god. Spelled stuff out and it was still melodic. He was so impressive, I'm listening to his ff4 one right now, because it owns that much...

Cheetah man... I never heard of the game and I never saw a video till I read this forum. But its hilarious and that song is addictive.

This thread is so educational. I have learned so much. About the atama ga pan. I had no idea it was like that. I think I saw that video before, but I had no idea it was so political...

Well about the link I posted. The song is from super smash 64 as kirby's dreamland stage. (although after some research the actual track is called kirby's gourmet race and its from kirby super star and the gourmet race is one of the games in it.) It also was brought back as a past stage in melee.

But I was actually asking for the original vid, in terms of the first person who sung this version. I think I found it last night. I think it was a minute version. It seems people keep adding lyrics to it. I think its all about food, but my japanese is far below sub-par... Anyways is this how trends start, one person sings it, then another person does their version, then another, etc? Or is it more like a discussed thing?

I feel like Ihave not been using nico to it's fullest... Please tell me what do you do to find the popular vids? Do you just have to check and see the frequency of how many times its uploaded? Also wjhat is the nice boat treatment? When a video gets deleted and its replaced by a boat and some lady talking?

Edit: here is my member number 13***** does this mean I get screwed? How long was nico out before I joined?

This is a ff4 version of the douga suite, I think its well made, his lyrics are really good. So much better than the people who tried in english. I think he changed almost every word. My personal favorite is omai tent, lol instead of omai gonzo.

http://www.nicovideo.jp/ranking/mylist/daily/all or view the weekly ranking videos that are made. They usually appear on Tuesday or Wednesday.

What you are seeing is the current video for the "video has been deleted by the uploader". When a video is deleted by the uploader, a flag is set and it plays the current deleted by user video instead.

Speaking of rankings, it gets a bit annoying that whenever a new season rolls along half the ranking is dominated by anime uploads. Okay, so I do watch anime on niconico, I don't hide that - but can't people be discreet about it? Getting it to the rankings makes it too blatant, I dunno... And the bigger problem is that it hides actual other stuff that might've had a better chance to be popular.

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2081002 (Don't turn up the volume!)

Anyway, just here to throw in an absolutely evil mix of two songs - IOSYS' ultra-addictive Usatei and a song by Taro that recently got a bit of a spotlight on niconico, Danjo.

What can I say. The tags at time of writing were correct - 400% synchro and 400% addictive nature. I didn't even used to like this sort of utterly brain-melting song but I AM WEAK. And I do like how it sorta fits! Although it gets chaotic near the end.

Compilation Niconico Douga, or 組曲「ニコニコ動画」. A collection of various songs into a 11 minute stream of non-stop otakudom. You lose at life if you recognize each and every one of these songs:heh:. Anyway, I find it interesting enough to post a series of videos.
Niconico Douga, huh? I came across a violin mix using Kotomi's first violin scene in Clannad (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1739576), didn't know there were so many other variations. I'm not going to even try sorting out all the sources, whatever the visual clues. :heh:

It's weird. I normally play flv files with Media Player Classic as opposed to VLC, as MPC allows me to jump around. But when I try to open nicovideo flv files in MPC, I only get the audio, so I have to switch back to VLC... Dr. DivX OSS won't open them, either, so I can't simply convert them to avi and rip the audio but have to go the longer way instead.

I like the Cheetahman mixes. :)

On the topic of musical suites, Lantis jumped on the kumikyoku bandwagon (http://www.lantis.jp/) and is releasing a CD called Lantis Kumikyoku (Lantis Suite) featuring "NicoNico Artistes".

And by that I mean the well-known singers on niconico - already J and Gomu have been announced as taking part. However, it's an otherwise professional/commercial product as the suite will be a medley of famous songs released under the Lantis label, and will be arranged by Noriyasu Agematsu (composer of Eternal Blaze, Brave Phoenix, Tsubasa wa Pleasure Line) and Daisuke Kikuda (I'll be darned if I recognize any of these songs) from a group called Elements Garden. The CD, LACM-4466 goes on sale 5th March for 1200 yen...

Everyone's just silently ignoring that strictly speaking, singers like that did make themselves famous through what could be called copyright infringement (singing and sharing songs written by others without paying them royalty).

What is this? On first glance it seems to be the entire first episode of Haruhi, with the English dub. But with Japanese subtitles?

Looking at the subs, though, it seems as though this is mostly a parody sub...
So basically someone used the english dub in order to make the parody subs more readable, maybe?

In any case it's fascinating and I wonder if bandai will let it slide.

It is interesting, what would bandai do IF they found out about it? The japanese already had, and watched the show, so they can make no money selling to japanese, so they are not losing money by having japanese fans upping their show. So why would they care? I think if they did they would just be jerks, lol. Well I don't understand copyrights ad all that jazz, so my post may be void. But it still is interesting.

@wao
Well another interesting comment. Considering that those artists did get famous in that particular method, why is that being over looked? But regardless of how they got famous they are famous and company will take any opportunity to make money off of them. But that is so amazing that some is recording a cd because they got famous on the internet. Do you happen to know how J and gomu got popular. Oh course I first heard of them from the suite, did they do stuff before that?

wao

Seems to me like the guy did a parody sub and used the English dub simply because it's funnier that way (why have a parody sub of something you already understand?)

It can easily be said that if one was strict about copyright infringement 99% of niconico douga would disappear because so much of it is derivative works (putting cases of actual anime episodes uploaded aside). I suppose the suite itself was kind of "overlooked" by the big companies because the songs used were only a sample (therefore not really a replacement for buying the song) and once it's made such a big splash in the otaku community... In fact, I think there was one time the original kumikyoku video was deleted due to copyright requests (I think?) and there was quite a little uproar about it.

This never fails to happen when Historical Pillars of Niconico get hit, like not so long ago the legendary Aitsu koso ga Tennis no Oujisama (Prince of Tennis video) got deleted. That spawned so many famous soramimi such as "海鮮炒めじゃないんだよ!" and "猫駆除" and was host to many comment masters who came up with the most hilarious things... Needless to say for a short while after the deletion replacement videos were upped and fervently re-filled with the requisite funny lines. People even made In Memorial videos and stuff like that, heh. Yet most Japanese otaku embrace the current laws of copyright without ever wondering whether an alternative licensing system would have better suited the kind of things they like to do...

I guess since in J and Gomu (or should I call him Gum?)'s case since they were there early on in niconico douga and they presumably added more of a "transformative element" in the work by actually singing it...? Or maybe because of that they've built up their own fanbase which Lantis realises they could take advantage of so it's worth overlooking...

Either way, this isn't the first time a commercial product has acknowledged niconico douga trends - seen the second remix CD released for Lucky Star (http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%89%E3%81%8D%E2%98%86%E3%81%99%E3%81%9F-Re-Mix002%7E%E3%80%8E%E3%83%A9%E3%82%AD%E3%82%B9%E3%8 2%BF%E3%83%8E%E3%82%AD%E3%83%AF%E3%83%9F%E3%80%81% E3%82%A2%E3%83%83%E3%83%BC%E3%80%8F%E3%80%90%E3%81 %97%E3%81%A6%E3%82%84%E3%82%93%E3%82%88%E3%80%91%7 E-%E5%8A%A0%E8%97%A4%E8%8B%B1%E7%BE%8E%E9%87%8C-Project-%E3%82%89%E3%81%8D%E2%98%86%E3%81%99%E3%81%9F%E3%8 1%AE%E3%81%BF%E3%82%93%E3%81%AA/dp/B000XQV1ZO)? Just look at the goddamn title - らき☆すた Re-Mix002~『ラキスタノキワミ、アッー』【してやんよ】 - Luckysta no Kiwami, AAH! (Shite yan yo).
Firstly, a reference to an original song composed for Hatsune Miku, Mikkumikku ni shite ageru (full name - Mikkumikku ni shite ageru ♪ (shite yan yo)), go read the Vocaloid2 thread for details. I think it's become the most viewed video on the site now, actually.
And secondly, a reference to Futae no Kiwami, AAH!, a sorta meme that derives from this famous video comparing a fight scene from Rurouni Kenshin in different languages. Everyone is strangely amused by the English voice actor's rendition of Sanosuke's move name and how gay it sounds.
(There are many soramimi that come attached with this series of videos, like Aoshi's "homolemon" and EROS☆TIME and CCO and お取り寄せ and so on - it's spawned countless videos using the voices to "sing" songs by piecing sound clips together, producing things like this: Warning, do not turn up the volume!)
And then there's the track title called Kumikyoku "Lucky Star Douga"... Not very subtle, is it? :) Plus they even got JAM Project to sing Motteke! Sailor Fuku, although this might just be 'cos they're anime song artistes and not because they enjoy some popularity and official interaction with niconico douga...
And what do you know, this CD is released by Lantis as well.

As for what J and Gomu got popular for before the suite, I'm dead sure Gomu's unforgettable rendition (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm83) of Okkusenman is what got him popular. It's one of the first videos I watched on the site... okay, and since when did Gomu get a ringtone on Dwango's site (http://ichiba.nicovideo.jp/item/dw1537330)? As for J... His first video appears to be Okkusenman as well, but I think he got popular with METAL OF OKUSENMAN or was it the Koi no Mikuru Densetsu metal version... Personally I became aware of him because of his explosively popular rendition of the kumikyoku (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm682897), though... (And since when did J's rendition of mikkumikku (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1602984) get a ringtone as well (http://ichiba.nicovideo.jp/item/dw1543435/related)? :twitch:)

By the way, this is the time announcement advertising the sale of this Lantis Suite CD (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2093163) featuring the voices of J and Gomu. I missed it on the 21st... I wonder who the other artistes will be, I kinda hope gazelle would be in it as I loved her rendition of Melt despite what the fanbois say. Then again if she gets featured the flamers will be ugly to see...

Thanks for the informative post, wao. I would have given you a cookie but I need t' 'spread it around more.' Regarding J, my guess would be Koi no Mikuru (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm404773), posted last June. It's great listening to that song again. There's also this X-Japan link (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2068046).

As a side note, niconico is also affecting the Korean "market"; Mikumiku-ni-shite-ageru, Okusenman, Airman and other famous niconico songs are being distributed by a major Korean karaoke producer, Taejin (other Japanese karaoke distributors already have them I hear). Although it seems that the niconico medley won't be making it; too many copyright owners to track down!

Even prior to that, Lantis advertised the Patie x Konata CD on TV with a mock nico commercial (the song playing with comments flying by). Lantis clearly knows the double-edged sword they have here and are trying their best to exploit it.

This pisses me off so bad. I did a cover of perfume's macaroni single, to the instrumental, and then took the time to arrange english lyrics and sing it again (at someone's request). Now What makes my video different from the other videos on nico? What makes my infringement different?

This was the japanese version I up-loaded to nico
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBukqcXmYro

I'm planning on singing the kirby's gourmet race song, will it get taken down as well? Maybe its just the people from perfume being d*cks? Maybe not everyone will be so strict... Should I take this down from youtube, before my account gets suspended there?

In my personal opinion, I think they took my stuff down because I am american. But I'll never know. Pissed am I about this... It was popular too, the japanese one had 1000 hits the first day... and about 115 comments, all of them encouraging... Man I am pissed about this one, but maybe it happened to others? Does nico take stuff down posted by americans?

It would be really bizarre, I think, for them to do that just because you write that you're American in the description... I doubt your location or IP has much to do with it.

I'm pretty sure that not every copyright holder is equally strict, because it's their choice to submit a request for the video to be removed, but Perfume... I don't know, I never really followed any of the Perfume vids on nico because I don't like them much (my preferred flavour of Yasutaka Nakata is pre-2006 capsule tyvm)...

But I have seen various Perfume vids deleted here and there so it might just be possible that they've been deleting various other people singing the karaoke as well since technically it is copyright violation.

Coincidentally enough today I also got the first deletion notice from the site - for some TokiKake AMV (made by someone else)

If I may ask a question: I'm in the process of making a doujin drama CD for an upcoming event (puri fea "Pretty Fair" Yes! Pretty Cure 5 only event), and as part of the CD we'll be including english dubbed opening and ending and insert songs (as well as an original radio drama).
Although all doujin is copyright violation, do you think including those tracks on the CD would be taking things beyond the area where the companies overlook it?
Considering it's an english cover of the song, I would hope there would be a bit more leeway than doing a straight japanese version.

I really want to hear her sing, I prefer women vocalists. So I want to hear her, but I can't find any of her songs. Is her name in english or katakana?

@Quarkboy
I wish I knew more so I could help you, but it seems that it doesn't matter that its english or not. When I did my songs, I did (one of them) in english. It was fully english with english lyrics made by me, but the translation was by someone else. They still axed mine. So I don't think it being english would get you more leeway. I think it they were cracking down it, it wouldn't matter how much of the original is in english. But if they are letting japanese ones slide, then I think they will let your slide, if they are cracking down on japanese ones, they are probably going to be cracking down on yours well. If they were cracking down on the japanese ones and let yours slide, that would make a lot of people angry... But of course I know nothing about copyrights, let wao help you.

I have a question about this clip. I have heard the audio from this clip being stretched before, I'm wondering what the audio is from. It sounds spanish, plus they keep saying cco, its funny as hell, but I don't know what they are talking about.

2008-01-27, 03:09
Oh NOS!! You have stumbled on yet another illegitimate bastard of Rurouni Kenshin... I mean, Futae no Kiwami AAH (that is almost taking on a parallel universe of its own).

I don't know about the Zelda bit, but if you're wondering about the audio then it all starts from this evil video (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm983283) where some guy compared one scene from Rurouni Kenshin in different languages. Combine the general lack of foreign-language understanding on niconico and the easy creation of mock subtitles to create "heard words" (soramimi), you have a gigantic meme that comes back every other day to AAH you in the butt. This is one of the references included in the name of that official Lucky Star remix CD.

The original video was gut-burstingly hilarious due to the extremely crappy dubbing, ridiculous moves and nonsensical lines concurrently playing through what was supposed to be a Serious Battle Fight, and the wonderful memories of Sanosuke's English seiyuu's most wonderful delivery of the line "Futae no Kiwami, aaah!"... so much so that people have taken the liberty to add it in pretty much every song/situation imaginable (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E3%83%95%E3%82%BF%E3%82%A8%E3%83%8E%E3%82%AD%E3%8 3%AF%E3%83%9F%E3%80%81%E3%82%A2%E3%83%83%E3%83%BC% EF%BC%81). (Including a parody of Eva episode 1 (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1410944).) There is even a wiki dedicated entirely to this meme (http://www29.atwiki.jp/ccopedia/). Frankly speaking, it's annoying, but nobody's going to stop. (My personal favourite is Futae x Konayuki (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1641236) - the modifications of the pictures were just hilarious. Oh Houji, I didn't think you were so good at making snowmen ;))

So the video you linked is just another byproduct of too much time and not enough Kiwami in the world. If you want to figure out all the mis-heard words here (http://www29.atwiki.jp/ccopedia/pages/21.html) is a convenient list of the original lines and their corresponding soramimi - I will never forget the most creative use of "売れんかいな" and MEKEMO (me quemo). But you might as well watch the original clip while you're at it.

jigenbakuda
2008-01-28, 15:31
I personally think its amazing how they get the music and the audio to match. "Futae no Kiwami, aaah!"= best line ever. When I watched the original vid, I was laughing so hard. Its really funny. CCO is hilarious too. Your favorite, the konoyuki, does that mean powder snow? I think my girlfriend send me that song.

My my you are resourceful. You are extremely knowledgeable. How did you get to learn so much of nico's culture? Do you have any vids to recommend to me?

wao
2008-01-28, 22:46
Konayuki means powder snow, yes. It's the famous theme song of the J-drama 1 Litre of Tears, if I'm not mistaken, and the original really is a nice song by Remioromen. I quite like it myself.

If you like that song I recommend this particular (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1592472) 忙しい人のために (for busy people) version of it. The busy people thing really hit its stride, I think, when this guy (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/3339988) uploaded a whole load of songs that have been pared down "for busy people", but end up sounding completely hilarious because the song takes on a totally different meaning. Now there are more than 2000 videos (http://forums.animesuki.com/%C3%A5%C2%BF%C2%99%C3%A3%C2%81%C2%97%C3%A3%C2%81%C 2%84%C3%A4%C2%BA%C2%BA%C3%A5%C2%90%C2%91%C3%A3%C2% 81%C2%91%C3%A3%C2%82%C2%B7%C3%A3%C2%83%C2%AA%C3%A3 %C2%83%C2%BC%C3%A3%C2%82%C2%BA) uploaded along this line. Some of them derive their humour factor from a sort of surreal experience - a famous song etched in many people's brains (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1328386) becomes a brusque, in-your-face summary.
But usually it's only funny if you understand Japanese, or at least the original song's meaning.
Some of my favourites are:
We Are (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1161202) (I can't remember the original anymore, I keep thinking 個人的な荒らしは(・∀・)イイ!! every time I listen to it now),
Gatchaman no Uta (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1743142) (Tocchaman! Yucchaman! JICCHAMAAAAN),
Tatakae! Casshern (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1506603) (kyakyakya~n),
this version of Aitsu koso ga Tennis no Oujisama (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1854242) (he's not looking at everyone's games!),
Asu he no Houkou (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1243085) (Your life is a red Tanaka.), and
Kono Ki Nan no Ki (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2004470) (Hitachi's company song - the original vid got deleted, but it's too good to stay gone! It's a pity the comment spam has become really crappy; the screen full of "木ですから!!##(激怒" and spam of water/fire/oil/makka na chikai was what made it so memorable.)

As for how I know whatever I know about nico culture (I won't say it's that much) - chalk it up to being a loser who spends more time on pointless videos than meaningful activities like homework and scholarly sites. If that wasn't obvious enough. I bet you there are some users on this forum who know more than me and have been there longer.

If you want to learn more about the memes and history of niconico, try watching the videos that compile the popular weekly videos (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E3%83%8B%E3%82%B3%E3%83%8B%E3%82%B3%E3%83%A9%E3%8 3%B3%E3%82%AD%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0?sort=v) - it's a good reflection of what's popular around that time. I warn you, some of them are pretty long even if they only show excerpts of videos, but it's faster than spending a year on niconico and learning things that way :) There's been so many booms and sub-booms... Sometimes you just find out when you stumble across a really popular video and realise there are many similar ones. I've been exposed to a lot of things I normally wouldn't have watched, like some of the most awesome custom Mario maps and gameplay videos (the guy who uploaded the famous 友人シリーズ has the highest total viewership count as a person, I think) and insane crack AMVs of Yugioh of all things...

@wao

After watching your videoes, i quickly realized the extent of my japanese, lol. The only think that was funny to me was prince of tennis, but that was mostly because of previous prince of tennis jokes I've seen (prince of penis for example). But yea As someone commented on before I have excellent wapanese... I've only been studying a year and am only on 3rd grade kanji, so needless to say, I could not get many of the jokes.

But I was going to buy the box set of gatchaman, your video reminded me. gatchaman looked so cool to me.

I have been sick all this week so I haven't been on nico at all. But I'll start looking at top rankings page more often.

But those custom mario maps and that really hard versions of super mario world, so awesome. I saw a music vid of nothing but mario sounds as he transversed through a stage it was amazing. I would try to find it, but I know I won't be able to..., looked for a while and could not find it, but I saw some interesting custom maps. This one stood out the most to me (well mine were all super mario world, not original super mario)
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm446945

I love the yugi-vids, they make me laugh so hard. Yugioh and prince of tennis will get me chuckling almost every time without fail...

Well do you have any other bits of nico culture you would like to share?

Whoops, of course I had meant to say Super Mario World, not the original Mario :) (there's only so much you can do with the original, after all)

Seriously, I've never played a single second of Mario in my life but I just LOVE watching these videos because I can't believe how creative some of these map makers are. The most famous guy only recently went into a game creator school or something, I think, which means he must've been pretty young too.

There's a few tags worth checking out if you are interested:

1. Mario mods (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E6%94%B9%E9%80%A0%E3%83%9E%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AA) (改造マリオ)
Personally, I only watch the Super Mario World ones, and that's a lot of win and awesome as it is. You can use this tag to check out the first episode (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E6%94%B9%E9%80%A0%E3%83%9E%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AApart1 %E3%83%AA%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AF) of many series - but you can't talk about Mario mods without having watched the two legendary Yuujin series (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/2882981#at_a). I love them; they're probably the most viewed series of Mario videos on the site.
There are too many good ones to mention but I was particularly impressed by this one (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1122920) by another guy, as he incorporated Auto-Mario in the second half; speaking of which...

2. Automatic Mario (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E8%87%AA%E5%8B%95%E3%83%9E%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AA%E3%8 2%B7%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BA) (自動マリオ)
The stage level is designed exactly such that you don't need to move Mario at all (for some you need to press some key the whole way, those are called 半自動 or semi-auto). You probably can't play some of these any other way, unless you're this (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm891777) guy (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm989950) (he wasn't told they were supposed to be auto).
Recommend:
The Original Guy (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/1376729) (The guy who made the legendary first Auto-Mario video (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm529389). It gets so much better!)
Kichiku Mario (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/1853695) (The creator is SADISTIC - he's the one who made the guy play it manually.)
Auto Luigi (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/2174776) (perfect numbers by Luigi the Yoshi kidnapper)
Detteiu Mario (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/1544254) (Yoshi - don't leave home without it.)
Pythagora Mario (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/1565301) (Remember Pythagora Switch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagoras_switch)? Also, this guy is great at reusing items)

3. Automatic Mario Sequencer (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E8%87%AA%E5%8B%95%E3%83%9E%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AA%E3%8 2%B7%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B1%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B5) (自動マリオシーケンサ)
Like Automatic Mario except it's made to go along with a song, sometimes including in-jokes related to it.
Recommend:

Marisa wa Taihen na mono wo nusundeikimashita (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm761460)
(Who doesn't know this song? It may seem boring and out of sync, but this is the original auto-Mario Sequencer.)
Kanbu de Tomatte sugu Tokeru - Kyouki no Udongein (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1981753) (with Luigi)
(You can't call yourself a niconico user without having heard this. But of course Luigi mode is only acceptable if you're Detteiu!)
Usatei (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2095935)
(Yet another IOSYS one. You can't escape from these.)
Hare Hare Yukai (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1054222)
(Impeccable timing!)
Sousei no Aquarion (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1876961)
(Noticed the tree of life, wings and the touching story?)
Agent wa Yoru wo Yuku (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1394299)
(The Idolmaster song that spawned the Tokachi craze - there's a map of Hokkaido there, haha... Tokachi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokachi_Subprefecture), geddit?)
Jinrui Metsubou (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2124493)
The original video (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm811361) is a classic - a video of a baseball player (I never found out who...) hitting a ball so fast that it's been edited to look like a laser beam, and the American announcer sounds like he's saying "TOBA ICHIROU GO!" (Toba Ichirou is the name of an enka singer)
Followed by images of the Earth pelted by meteors and drowning in lava to the tune of "盆回り (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2196250) (Bon-mawari)" by The Drifters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Drifters_%28comedian%29) which was used as the ending to one of their sketches or something.
Not Ichirou again!

I don't think this originated on niconico, but I don't know where from - 2chan? youtube?
It became a meme, spawning videos of many predictable situations (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E4%BA%BA%E9%A1%9E%E6%BB%85%E4%BA%A1%E3%82%B7%E3%8 3%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BA). But what I particularly like about that Mario video is the lovely use of Detteiu Yoshi and the suitable use of lava and boulders (of course, the ending is perfect).

4. Mario Paint/Mario Sequencer (http://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/%E3%83%9E%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AA%E3%82%B7%E3%83%BC%E3%8 2%B1%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B5) (マリオシーケンサー)
I don't think this needs explanation ;) Just remember that some keys cannot be played - not like that's stopped people from doing even the kumikyoku (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm765301) with it. If you've watched that VIP SENSEI video with the silent film scenes and that Mario song and they've pasted a pixelated face on it, that's Affun from Mario Paint. Everybody loves Affun.

Some things handy to know while watching Mario vids:
Detteiu (でっていう) refers to Yoshi, because apparently it sounds like "detteiu" when Mario gets on him.
Yoshi is a bit of a joke; creators like to either abuse him (disposable dragon!) or make him Mario's best buddy.
Expect people to go "Sa~da~ Masashi~" during the castle BGM. I think this one (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm576779)'s the origin of it.
When it's cut off halfway it's called "SadaKyan" (Sada Cancel)
There are lots of idiots who like making up lyrics for the BGM; the most accepted ones are "Eki no home de zupponpon" (for the upbeat ragtime-like one) and "NEET ga ippai niconico douga" (for the happy normal one). Oh, and "Nippon Telecom" during a part of the latter BGM. The rest should just shut up. :p
Koumei (孔明) refers to those hidden blocks that look like [\ /]. Don't panic, it's a trap of Koumei!
升 means チート which means cheat. Also, ignore everyone thinking they're funny by pretending that TAS is actually a person (preferably german)

Koumei (孔明) refers to those hidden blocks that look like [\ /]. Don't panic, it's a trap of Koumei!

孔明の罠

This is a reference to a manga series in the 1970s to 1980s called Sangokushi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yokoyama_Mitsuteru_Sangokushi), which is based on the Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_of_the_Three_Kingdoms).

If you're familiar with the stories, Zhuge Liang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuge_Liang) is well known for his skills as a master strategist for the Kingdom of Shu. While his arch-rival in the Kingdom of Wei is Sima Yi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sima_Yi).

In Yokoyama's manga, everytime Zhuge Liang devises a scheme for the Wei troops to fall in, the ever vigilant Sima Yi would always cut in and say "Beware! This could be a trap by Komei!" (Komei refers to Kong Ming, Zhuge Liang's second name)

This phrase was used so many times that it's become popular with the 2ch denizens and now niconico users and now refers to anything that looks like one thing, but is actually something else in disguise.

Well I will comment on the videos later, but I'm a big mario whore. I played super mario world to death. Can skip to boswer from donut land. Beat special, cleared every level, was the first of my friends to realize the sunken ship was from mario 3... I lov super mario world, the music was top notch, everything was spectacular, great game even today. But I did not know about cheats and glitches back in the early 90's, I was just a kid, so I never did anything glitchy, but I did most things in the regular game...

Hahaha, holy shit - on the topic of great Mario vids there's a recent series combining two popular genres on niconico into one:

Yugioh x Mario! It's more play videos of modified Mario maps except it's as if Kaiba made the map and made Yami(/ATM/whatever) play it with all sorts of annoying funny annoying funny narration clips taken from the anime. It's really hilarious, and the maps are good to boot.

Here's the first one, but be careful not to watch it during "Economy" periods as the audio desyncs. http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1931738

And the second one: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2198837

Pretty fun watching these. Well then again, I only got to enjoy Yugioh jokes entirely thanks to the myriad of evil, bad, nasty, horrible, dastardly infectious Yugioh videos on niconico... Friends don't let friends get hooked onto the most silly Yugioh videos around. :(

I hope here is the right thread for this. I accidentally (really) found Yuri Seiyu series in niyaniya, currently till part15 http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/4049494.
Most ( if not all) of it are from the anime web radio.

The most famous seiyu for this are called 百合声優四天王 (The Four Devas of Yuri Seiyu), Ueda Kana, Nabatame Hitomi, Matsuki Miyu who like girls, and Noto Mamiko who are the most popular among them (female seiyu); yeah, Noto Mamiko is a lady's killer :twitch:. Recently there's Itou Shizuoka appeared in the stage, and I think She's the most popular now. Is this also the reasons why she's selected as Shinra's VA?? :heh:

Those videos really make me smile... I think that the blending of 2 franchises is so great (when done for comedic purposes). I love mario, I love young yugi, and most of all I love enemy controller. I preferred the one that had commentary all the way thru. Both maps were fiendish. But the second one was extremely hard, I'm not sure I could of completed that one.

But on your first post I never responded to...
I had seen those types of videos before, but I didn't know what they were called. I love the hard levels, more than automatic stages. But auto stages are a design marvel... I think that mario world was a stupendous game.

@Sister Princess
That video owned so much. Do you know if that was an actual game they modded. Or was it a video that was made. I'm suprised how well mario works in the mega-verse. I want to see mario in a megamari game
Heres a great example of a pro player, no hit, the whole game... nothing less than amazing... http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1774114

Great link, Sister Princess! Thanks.

And I'm glad you like those kind of vids jigenbakuda. I personally enjoy seeing the hard vids more too, although some of those auto-Marios have marvelous designs. I agree that the second video was funnier (I don't know why I crack up whenever I hear their voices... R-R-R-Reisei ni nare!)

It's amazing that a video game from so long ago can still be so much fun - and it's really to Nintendo's benefit that they don't delete all these videos for "infringing on copyright". If you leave it to the fans, they can really enrich a franchise more than "official creators" ever could...

...speaking of which, those official events organised by niconico don't seem to be too popular, do they? Aside perhaps from the top videos from the Official JAM PROJECT Remix Festival - somehow it's only the fan-driven stuff that really sparks off memes, I guess because most of the time fan-driven video responses involve copyrighted stuff which would be limited in official competitions. I suppose it's obvious, but it's also a little sad; I guess in some ways I wanted to see one of those ideas work. Not like I did anything to help, of course.

And speaking of memes I'm about this ready to stab the Gourmet Race theme song with a painful spork. Except that I also don't want to admit that I... I still enjoyed the Light one. (The effects of the Light x Dango Daikazoku video still haven't worn off, you know? I can't look at a single shot from that last episode scene without thinking MATSSSDA MATSSSDA)

My newest addiction within niconico: caramelldansen, also known as ウッーウッーウマウマ(゚∀゚). Apparently this is a remix of some Swedish band song? For some reason, this got associated with a portion of the opening to Popotan (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1615562), and resulted in a flurry of paradies, like of Lucky*Star (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2199151), Higurashi (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2248779), Suzumiya Haruhi (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2232562), and so on. Very distinctive in the style of SD drawing and movement, with both hands next to ears mimicing rabbit ears. Highly addictive (i.e. 中毒注意 :heh:)

Edit: Darn you, wao. I finally got Danjou out of my head, and now...! (gotta go listen to more caramelldansen)

I started watching videos on Niconico last year when my Japanese friend first introduced it to me. I really like how quite a lot of the videos have really high visual and audio quality (compared to Youtube at least), plus some of the comments on there crack me up :D. These days I mostly use Niconico for Puyo Puyo matches and song medleys (only to sample different songs as I am still not happy with the audio quality of Nicovideos, even if they have 320kbps MP3 quality).

So far I have uploaded about 15 videos on Niconico and most of them are Puyo Puyo videos. One of the videos has nearly 13000 views now, which I am quite happy about.

2008-02-07, 02:54
Kaioshin_Sama: I've experienced the same thing. I can't explain it technologically, but I guess maybe some videos are size-wise really huge yet have crappy quality to make up for it? I dunno, sometimes it also depends on the time (I have VERY fast speeds on weekday mornings as most nico users are at work/school, but it's hopeless expecting fast speeds on weekend evenings, obviously)
I know some videos have been purposely encoded to "avoid Economy-mode" - if the video is less than a certain specification, it won't have its video quality degraded during peak hours even if it's currently very popular. Their method of reducing video quality is quite awful though, some videos get desynced with the audio and some are just unwatchable. -_-

I wish I knew why some are so disgustingly slow though, really...

dahl_moon: I've seen that one popping up quite often in the rankings charts but never dared to check it out (I know this will end up like danjo if I do), but I think eventually I will cave in and see it.

...never mind, I just did. ...ウッーウッーウマウマ(゚∀゚) AARGH
(I think I still prefer Danjo, though!)
(...wait, did this originate from overseas? In which case that's pretty cool. :D)

p997tt: 13k views! I'm almost envious. I've only uploaded: Youtube transfers (cat videos etc), a Dennou Coil vid and 4 drawing process videos. I'm lucky if I get more than 2k views after 5 months, but then again nobody really wants to watch drawing process vids unless they're using famous characters and are particularly moe.

Man, this thing is spreading like wildfire, already there are Clannad, Nanoha and Vocaloid versions and there's no end to this. :D

This is all quite freaky. :heh: The sequence of events are as followed: Last weekend, I watched for the first time an (awesome) AMV done to this song (Chiikaboom - SugardanSen (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=151769)). About the faces being coverd, on my video for nico, I covered my face. I thought it was cool. So I did it. But I get a little opposed to it when a cute face is behind the obstruction... But I think its cool seeing the different ways people mask their identity.

Huh?? I thought it's a video against a proposed law to make downloading of certain materials against the law (until now only uploading has been illegal). I haven't bothered to look through the whole video (26 minutes...) but I think they are using America as an example of What Will Go Wrong if they have it in Japan. Of course, to many brainwashed people this is something that should happen as naturally as foreigners should all be fingerprinted, but some (and you are bound to find some of these some on nico, almost entirely full of what is essentially copyright infringement) are afraid about how far this law can be extended.

Keep in mind this is the country where anime fans are afraid to have their sites public because they're afraid the companies will go after them, and remembered for having relatively few images even on Wikipedia because of zomg copyright. And we have idiotic cases like Johnny's actually preventing magazines from even printing their own magazine covers correctly (http://www.pliink.com/mt/marxy/archives/2007/08/jj-and-johnnys.html) because of portrait publicity rights (http://www.pliink.com/mt/marxy/archives/2007/02/stop-using-imag.html), although I think there is an equivalent of this in other countries too... (and making up for it by allowing... pixelation (http://meta.neojaponisme.com/2008/02/04/johnnys-new-insane-compromise-on-web-photo-usage/)!11)
(And now I'm just waiting for someone to counter-correct me or flame me on this)

At least it's very good to have discussion and raising of awareness regarding this issue, even if they manipulated it up the ranks.

Oh my god, this is strange.

So I was in a yodobashi camera the other day and I saw "Golden Eggs" on a screen in the DVD section and I sat watching it for a few minutes because 1. It had english subs on it for some reason, and 2. It was incredibly hilarious.

And it turns out the ONE episode I watched in the store (episode 14) was the one that that niconico video parodied. I'm also a fan of touhou...

Anyway I just wasted 2 hours of my life watching the rest of Golden eggs (all 26 episodes), and wow, that show is damn funny. I think Adult Swim should air it :).

But why are there english subtitles on it? Is it aired that way? And the translations are... well, crappy. I don't see how anyone could learn any english from the show, as it's insane.

Well you will have to ask someone else on the specifics of golden eggs. My girlfriend sent ne a youtube video of golden eggs last year (I think summer) and she asked me was it american. That is how I learned of golden eggs. I think the subtitles are there as if it was an american show. I always called golden eggs the japanese southpark. And south park always dubs for different languages (like the hilarious anime episode). But did any group fansub golden eggs? I know very little japanese so I did not realize the english subs were horrible. Was this show not popular with the american anime circle? Oh yea I think the golden eggs was done by the japanese mtv, so maybe the american mtv will show it, instead of adult swim. Also the show is making fun of americans... I wonder if that will be taken into consideration...

Well, I found out that it was produced by MTV Japan, so it's more like... Japan's Bevis and Butthead?

Anyway, the english subs aren't HORRIBLE... they're just very simplified. The actual japanese is extremely complicated from a translation standpoint, it's all fast talking adlib stuff, often with complex multi-language puns thrown in (especially for 2 of the characters).
It seems there are 26 5 minute episodes and the another 26 5 minute, uh, specials? Something called turkey hill TV where they have an "english lesson" at the end based off one of the lines from the show.

It is definitely making fun of americans, the show takes place in the town of "turkey hill" mostly at turkey hill high school, and the charcters are people like two female students, their teacher, the vice principal, a running back on the football team, and two escaped turkeys. Yes, two turkeys.
The show is actually quite clever as a whole as it's essentially 26 adlibbed sketches which all overlap into one continuous, uh, plot sorta thing. The animation is also interesting, if not crude.

Episode 14 is the best one, however. "It's not a bra!! It's a pectoral muscle support mechanism!"

They make fun of all kinds of american stuff, like white trash families, bad school band performances, gay-ish football coaches, idiotic teenage girls, dumb body builders, and even mean black lunch ladies.
So in any case they make fun of the right things :).

EDIT: Oh wait, so it lowers the average bitrate of the video and lets him upload super high quality on one half and nothing on the other! That's how things usually work even on YouTube. I uploaded some (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di7Kaek9x8Y) videos there, but conditions are severely harsher compared to Nico. Nico videos have to be under 40 MBs total, encoded with VP6 and the bitrate average has to be under ~600 kbps. Fortunately, BlankClip() is a miracle worker. You could probably drive those videos up to high-def resolutions, granted the videos were kept relatively short. Even so, nobody could benefit from such high quality videos because of Nico's limited display capabilities (no fullscreen and lack of player embedding).

sm2497063's bitrate average was 621 kbps (pushing it), so the first half had to weight around 1200 kbps. The resolution was set at 512x288, meaning it doesn't matter whether the uploader had a BD or a DVD source. Audio was MP3 @ ~128 kbps. It's a shame he didn't add black borders himself and declared the video as 4:3. He could've squeezed out a few more pixels that way.

Agreed. What was Lantis thinking stringing nearly 10 minutes worth of long sections of songs from eroge together. They had the same problem when they got to the JAM project section in the second half. It didn't feel the singers could adlib much either which took away some of the fun.

Man, I know I've bumped into this guy's stuff here and there on the rankings but when I decided to take the time to follow through his mylist I can't believe I haven't watched more of his videos sooner...

And I'm talking about none other than タイツォン (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/3067598#vc_d) (Taitson), who... I dunno, he has a lot of talents. I first remember him for singing the Cheetahmen II song with a rap (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1384758) You might think it isn't all that great, but I think it's pretty good for something done in a few days. He's doesn't just dabble in rapping, but creating lyrics, imitating some voice actors and singing too, I think. Here's some of his stuff I like:

1. His rendition of Death Note x Marisa wa Taihen na mono wo (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1322964) (etc) (note: it follows on a whole series of videos that use only the climatic scenes in the last episode of Death Note, so if you don't already know the ending don't watch it. By the way, SPIKE DIES)

2. Collaborations with Miku on popular songs: Mikku miku ni shite ageru (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1506752) and Ievan Polkka (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1324740)

3. Singing Tunak Tunak Tun (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1665250) of all things (It might sound awful, but I think he's probably got the best Indian pronounciation I've heard from a Japanese on nico thus far, and this is coming from someone originating from the Indian subcontinent)

What he's best known for, though, is singing those crazy renditions of songs using those Rurouni Kenshin dub clips (aka Futae no Kiwami). Putting aside the unanswerable question of why the hell anyone wants to sing those, if you happen to like some of them I suggest trying these out (after turning down the volume to be safe):

4. Rendition (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1377036) of Kiwami x Clash on the Big Bridge (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1180208) from FFV (the second half is a stereo comparison) If you think it isn't convincing enough, don't worry he improves...

5. Rendition (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1357828) of FFVI battle theme (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1297924) (...)

6. Rendition (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2369059) of Kiwami x Caramelldansen (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2332659) (second half also a comparison) I tell you if it wasn't for the noise in the original I would've been hard-pressed to tell which was the real one in the stereo comparison...

Although his rendition (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1424837) of that Super Mario RPG song is a bit funny if you understand English... He's so good at emulating sounds, I wished he could pronounce "l"...

I have a special kind of respect for the utterly batshit people who sing along to MADs and hardly use any pre-recorded voice, because it's so difficult. Assuming you ever wanted to, can you ever imagine singing (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1294910)EneCon (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1237966) (Usatei x the Enemy Controller from Yugioh)? Or actually taking on Kanbu de Tomatte Massugu Tokeru (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1824021)... and doing a pretty good job of it, to boot?

Also I think he's either around my age or perhaps a little bit younger. Man, I'm so glad there's crazy people like him in the world. ;∀;

On the topic of タイツォン, go for his Ura Kumikyoku. Almost felt like it was Kappei doing it when he's trying to sound like him. (He's also the one that started the "do-demo ii-------" for the Godman part of Ura Kumikyoku, if I remembered correctly.

...And because I love listening to "freedom"-styled Kumikyoku instead of the ones that follow the actual lyric... Introducing some that's not that famous but still pretty chaotic(?).

組曲『ニコニコ動画』

りょこ (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1541215) - Her video itself is a distraction. And she went off to sing random songs.
ジギル (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1019411) - 出オチ(N> EN translation), wrong lyrics, different song, lolicon. ←
あにま (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2109701) - Buncha neta between stuffs. May wanna turn off comment though, lots of fangirls.
右京 (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1601298) - Pickup spot: Yu-Gi-Oh!, Higurashi's "you", Marisa, Motteke, Figyu@. (Actually, just about everything.)
コゲ犬 - Unbelievable voice range for a guy. Buncha neta too. Gonzo part 18x.

↑合唱 (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2264248) of the above + 3 (どM, ASK, nam). Complete chaos.

ミラクル28歳♂ (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1056151) - 4 minutes. "For the busy people series". Guy.

裏組曲

あにま (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2231625) - More neta + changing things around. Raw Pokemanz. Yaranaika?
リモーネ先生 (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2226999) - "Zetsubou shita----!!". Muska. Donald. Yaran(ry

↑合唱 (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2303498) of those two + タイツォン & akito. Chaos all over again.

A second 合唱 (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2529813) that includes a bunch people who did Ura, which was actually on general ranking these past two days. (Being trolled at the moment about adding the "elite singers" into the chorus.)

(In short, I like Anima and kumikyoku chorus.)

Tell me about it. Korea is a world leader in the online video scene, but it only allows access to Korean IPs.

https://www.release.tdnet.info/inbs/430b04b0_20080311.pdf

In before ニコニコ\(^o^)/オワタ, but wait... The pdf is generally a press statement declaring Dwango's intentions to delete all videos infringing on the copyrights of a bunch of big TV stations (NHK, TBS, Fuji TV, TV Tokyo, etc), as well as monitor newly uploaded videos to speedily delete infringing videos.

So technically it's not that different from the site's current policy, except I guess this means there's an even smaller window. I suppose it's to be expected that the site will tighten these policies more and more as it becomes more mature; it's usually the testing periods that are most fun.

But frankly speaking, niconico becomes a lot less interesting if you really were to delete ALL stuff that deals with copyrights - and even among the stations listed, if they honestly intend to do as they stated then that's a lot of fun stuff going away.

Personally as much as it'd be nice if there were anime uploaded in low quality (because even if I have the DVDs of a show I like to watch it on niconico for the silly comments, dammit!) there's no arguing against it getting deleted, I suppose. But I wish the MADs would be left alone! :(

It would be nice if some of these TV stations had tieups with nico and there would be legal anime streaming (so far I can think of two short anime that were legally streamed on nico) but since I think most of them already have deals with video sites like Yahoo, Bandai Channel etc (that use DRM) they're unlikely to do so I suppose...

Rembr
2008-03-11, 10:27
I'm sure Dwango realizes that the anime community is Nico's lifeblood. Both them and the uploaders will likely take appropriate measures to slip past the line long enough for the usual operations to continue.

wao
2008-03-11, 11:35
Won't that lifeblood matter very little if they get hampered by lawsuits and other legal threats, though? To them, a "crippled" nico is better than potentially no nico at all.

After all, it's not like there's no interesting original content on niconico - there's non-anime/game related stuff like the Fuchagi/Elizabeth cat video series (well I'm a big fan of that, so there!) and all those original Vocaloid songs and the occasional original animation uploaded by various people. And some content providers seem to be more accepting of people playing around with their songs, rearranging them and singing along to them (Lantis, I imagine, and JAM Project which is under them explicitly held that JAM Project Festival where they gave away the vocal tracks to their song Rocks)

Nevertheless, if the momentum dies down even these creators may move to wherever's the next big place because that'll be where they get the attention. I'm not sure whether nico has got some patent or copyright over their comments-over-video technique (I think @Nifty had a copycat service once, and isn't zoome not dissimilar?) so it's not like they can particularly stop competition...

I think even if the uploaders can upload MADs and whatnot without hitting the usual search keywords (like not putting in the "anime" category) since the buzz is based on the very idea of popularity and visibility, they'll eventually get noticeable enough for the copyright holders to notice anyway... The bigger nico gets the more aggressive copyright holders will be, I think.

Rembr
2008-03-11, 12:09
This is all speculation, of course.

Crippled nico means far greater number in red than it has now. There'd be no point keeping an operation like that. Yes, I too enjoy some non-anime things on there like Shinsuke, Nagai and Sheena... but I believe anime and related viewers make up the majority. And that population is gonna get hit hard.

However, some animation studios might put their money on actually keeping their products on nico. The copyright thing may only affect certain studios in that ragard. Dwango can say that they're hitting ALL material, but if they acquire behind the door approval from certain studios/stations, they could potentially allow them to slip long enough for the general viewers to catch them.

Also on the other hand, this release might actually be a scheme on Dwango's side to cover their ass in case of dire situations, and may have had little to no initiative from the station/studio side.

wao
2008-03-13, 21:55
But I think that press release was the result of action by those studios. Otherwise why would they only pick those few? Why not go on to game companies and other conglomerates? I notice Toei isn't there even though (I think it was them) they used to be so persistent about deleting videos of the Japanese Spiderman.

Speaking of which, I should go do my daily check of whether that video (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2261656) is alive... yes it is! 34th day running. While I'm on the topic of Spiderman, this (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2248075) is my FAVOURITE out of the U.N. Owen Was Her? series. It's truly a video best watched on nico. But for that video... man I have no idea how many hours I've wasted just watching it again and again. When I think I've seen pretty much ALL the comment gods* then I get surprised by new ones... Particularly the HO comment god, he/she is just awesome. I've seen so many variations of ほ、ホ、even HO on the International title day, and today it was 補. LMAO.

Yup, it's definitely now harder to watch those anime-related stuff now. Last week there were still loads of videos of certain latest anime series, up till episode 1, today they're all wiped out ruthlessly.

Uploaders and eager viewers will now have to play a constant cat-and-mouse game with Dwango and the admins and race against time before the video gets removed. Niconico has definitely been "youtube-ized". More or less expected this day to come.

Before this crackdown, it was usually just the Bandai/Sunrise ones (Gundam) and JC Staff ones (Shana, etc) that got taken down quickly as no doubt those two big studios have a hardline approach on copyright enforcement since their anime franchises are indeed huge.

Other studios of less prominent anime seem to turn a blind eye as it's ultimately their intended target audience (hardcore otakus) who will watch these videos and end up buying the DVDs anyway.

On the flipside, at least now the rate of the anime episodes hitting Weekly Nico Nico Ranking is gonna be lower than before. =\ (I sure hope I'm not the only one who didn't really wanted to see the actual episodes on the ranking here, or that I'm the only one who ever watches the ranking...)

Asamidori
2008-03-14, 14:46
Most people watch the ranking to see which MAD/etc from the previous week was popular and/or what they missed, not for anime episodes. Sadly, at least one 本編 hit the ranking every week, which kill off that one possible rank for another video that may have been fun to watch for anyone who doesn't know about it.

I don't know about you, but I've catched quite a bit of stuffs that I would normally miss/skip thanks to the ranking (like that MGS photo shot thing (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2290316)), so it wasn't all that fun when a 本編 takes up that ranking spot.

Rembr
2008-03-14, 15:02
It's only few spots out of 100.

Far more than that is taken up by current fad clones.

Asamidori
2008-03-14, 15:03
Um, it's not 100.

Weekly Rankings of any kind show the short clips of the top 30s of the past week and then just the サムネ/preview/whatyoucallit of everything else below 31 that was listed in Nico's weekly general ranking (http://www.nicovideo.jp/ranking/mylist/weekly/all).

If they show a clip of the top 100 videos, the ranking will go on for about an hour. No one would watch that.

wao
2008-03-15, 00:37
I think he thought you meant this sort of thing: http://www.nicovideo.jp/ranking/mylist/daily/all

Personally I don't check the Nico ranking videos, I just look at that - if it's a big enough fad it'll stay there long enough for me to check it by the end of the day, if I'm lucky I catch some things that don't stay there for so long (and they don't always end up on those videos anyway) I find it much faster to just browse through the day's rankings rather than watch through the video. (And for crying out loud, サムネ is based off an English word "thumbnail") anyway, the only ranking videos I have watched are the year-end ones - those were really worth my time IMO.

I do feel a bit :/ about the episodes themselves on the rankings - I'm not complaining about them being uploaded to nico, since I would religiously follow Dennou Coil on it (that's an example of a widely purged series; it became a rule that it would get uploaded Sat evening and be gone by Monday morning. Something like a "gap in cyberspace", heh. Enough time for me.)

But it just feels a bit... not so nice to see them in the rankings so obviously - I know it sounds super hypocritical coming from me as I post in this sort of forum, but if you're going to upload episodes illegally then don't allow it to come out on something obvious, open and glaring as the rankings... :( It just angers the copyright holders even more and highlights it to everyone. An underground initiative is also fine, sort of thing.

I guess what angers even MAD creators is, as Kinny Riddle mentioned, the rather wide range of "copyright infringement" - personally I have been utterly shocked (and even disgusted) at the extent to which Japanese in general seem to take copyright to. Putting doujins aside, it feels (note: feels) like it's only in Japan where among fans they will call someone a copyright thief for using a 100x100 px avatar of a copyrighted image or quoting/translating someone else's words on a public foreign forum - AND the someone will take them seriously and apologize.
Well, it's technically against the law and you can't put MADs under their definition of "fair use" (I don't think it's called taht, but they do have some provisions under which limited amounts of copyrighted material may be used for free)
But who's going to benefit from taking MADs down? Unless the companies want people to pay them first before making MADs. If there's any fandom I see willing to do it, it'll be Japanese fans.

As you wish, I suppose. I do check out stuff I don't give a damn about, and I also rely on a friend who also occsaionally recommends videos to me - that's how I found out about the MGS one. I don't play MGS, but I roughly know about it and laughed enough at those old 性欲を持て余す videos. The few that I miss out on - I don't mind, as there's usually more than enough fun stuff to find out. Having said that this thread has also been helpful - I noticed that Hyadain guy's stuff in the rankings, but if Quarkboy hadn't recommended him I wouldn't have checked him out unless I was really bored. The jokes are some sort of Touhou thing (dammit, I don't get most of it because I don't follow the fandom at all) okay, that much is obvious.

But for the type of comedy, you must've heard it before - do you remember that Flash going around called Nakamuraya? The comedian might say something funny or ask a question (a "call") and the audience might shout a response, either a few people or a bunch at a time. (If I'm not wrong, I think this is called ai no te 合いの手 although that term can also refer to intervals of music...)

Again, if I'm not mistaken (I have 0 expertise on traditional Japanese entertainment) in many forms of Japanese entertainment - kabuki, etc. - the audience will shout the stage-name of the main actor if they think he/she has acted very well. Hence Nakamuraya (a -ya is usually indicative of a sort of stage name, it seems) etc.

Okay, and I just watched the movie but this is pretty much a close parody of the original Nakamuraya, although this one is a speech regarding a journalist and chock full of Touhou jokes. (One of them guessed "Sekkenya" as a place that Shameimaru went to, I think, just like some people were guessing completely ridiculous things like KAIYA! No, Kaiya is a foreigner!)

The original is a wedding speech (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm17680)... Go watch it if you haven't already! "QUIZ JA NAIN DA YO!!!!" is a line I remembered even before I learned Japanese properly :)

There is also a funeral speech (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm9163) version of Nakamuraya.

edit: actually, I don't know if this kind of speech-with-interruptions is a form of comedy in itself, or it's something new because the Nakamuraya in the video is normally a kabuki actor and everyone's still responding to him like he's one when he's off the stage. I do know they definitely call out the stage names during kabuki though.

Personally I uses TAGIRI for that, and I believe NicoPlayer save the comments too.

Aha, so it's kabuki in origin, that explains my sort of vague familiarity but with no actual understanding. I'll need to do a bit of research.

Thankfully I'm a giant touhou fan so I got a lot of the jokes (not ALL of them, though, as it used characters from almost all the games).

Yes, watched the original, and I think I understand how the format works now. It's almost like a sort of improv-madlib?

Base off one word (in this case the name "nakamura-ya", then attempt to predict things the speaker will say by interjecting variations of that word normally still ending in "ya"...

I think I might have to do this for my farewell speech when I leave my postdoc (I could get some grad students to help me, I think Dr. Kazama would be floored).

It seems to be originally a flash animation made to a track from the comedy troupe "グループ魂"'s 2005 cd TMC http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail/1446698

track 16 called "ooedo call and response".

So I guess it is more an original comedy skit which is making fun of kabuki traditions than an actual traditional thing.

Hilarious, in any case. Although not if you don't understand any japanese... Someone needs to attempt to translate it (impossible!).

Quarkboy

Aha! The sketch is a particular parody of what's called "Kakegoe" (trans: call and response), and it seems like there are some pretty strict rules...

according to this wikipedia page
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%A4%A7%E5%90%91%E3%81%86

there's a section on "kakegoe" that lists a bunch of examples, I think... trying to translate it now...

(I knew there was something interesting behind that video....)

Okay, that taught me very little... It seems the rules are you can call out their names, or their stage names, or the names of their ancestor performers, or the names of their hometowns, or stores near their hometowns, or generic simple phrases like "Nihon ichi!" and "daikon!" if you aren't "talented", but there are restrictions based on what ERA of kabuki is being performed as to what is considered acceptable, etc etc.... It seems, well, fascinatingly complicated.

An interview with the president of Kadokawa, on how he isn't totally against the uploading of anime videos onto video streaming sites like You-Tube.

It's really ironic that some studios like Mediaworks/Geneon ruthlessly expunge uploaded videos, only to have the boss of their parent company Kadokawa drop a major bombshell on them and tells them "Why such a big deal?"

Different people have different opinions on how it affects their sales.

I have noticed a slightly faster removal of anime episodes, but still not fast enough for it to be around for a reasonable amount of time, and that doesn't include the mirrors afterwards.

Fast enough that none of the 本編 made it to Weekly Nico Nico Ranking #45's top 30. >.> (Still a chaotic week though, that with White Day and the whole @Button thing.)

halyosy (the guy that did male version of Hatsune Miku's Melt) mixing his original song "Window" with Hige Driver's "Hello Windows (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2322242)".

「Hello Windows」にオリジナル曲「Window」を混ぜてみた (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2721967)

Wonder if there's gonna be a Hello Windows matsuri now, with both Anima's and halyosy's "version" of Hello Windows (w/ lyric) out.

I love halyosy's Windows (well, except the rap part maybe, I'm not so sure it was needed but by jove what an AWESOME voice, isn't he going pro?!) and I also quite liked that Dango Dai Kazoku x Hello Windows mashup, but... personally I don't mind a Scatman John festival either ;) Yeah yeah okay it's copyright infringement...

And talk about nostalgic, I have no idea why this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar%27s_fall) was sticking its nose in the rankings a short while back (I think it still is). On nico it's better known as YAWEY!!! ...maybe it's some kind of 2-year anniversary of the original.

EDIT: And in my mind I've always strongly associated Kadokawa with "leave the stuff alone for some time (unless it's the actual episodes)... and then DELETE LIKE HELL"
I mean what the hell, they didn't have to bloody delete that Motteke Sailor Fuku x Cheetahman mashup, did they?! Or a whole number of other MADs I've had to sadly remove from my mylist...
At least I'm so glad they still haven't deleted Irritating Miyuki (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm239240) (Ore Voice) Comedy gold, I tell you... This guys' Marimite stuff (this one in particular (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm168118)) was one of the first bunch of vids I watched on niconico, and I'm so glad it's still there. :) Ogasawrrrra Sachiko DEATH, yoropiko~☆ (I do wish he'd come back and do more stuff though.)

But well even GONZO used to delete stuff off Youtube so I guess it's not impossible for Kadokawa to change... damn, personally I'd love to see more legit anime on nico, it can be lower-quality than the usual Japanese streaming services (Gyao etc) so that it's not direct competition... Nothing beats watching anime on nico (well okay, some anime are better watched without them, and there can be spammers/spoilers, but I end up watching it a 2nd time with comments)

It's kinda a known underground fact that "that", "is" and "halyosy" = absorb (http://www.absorbweb.com/). Showta, Hiroshi and Haruyoshi, respectively. (People don't say it out loud 'cause it's an understandment, but yea. ...And if you go to absorb's site, self-cover of Sakura no Ame (http://www.absorbweb.com/info/080305392.php). ← Public announcement on their identity, in a way.)

Rap = Hiroshi = usually the back chorus person. (Since both showta and halyosy does the main vocal.)

This came up on teh rankings a few days ago, and I kept off posting it here but I'm just so tickled by this damn Yugioh MAD that I have to post it here:

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2751654

Yugi vs. Enemy Controller Squadron (Kaiba, Jounouchi and Bakura)... to the tune of the Sabre Dance by Khachaturian. Which is revenge against him being raepd by Enemy Controller dancing to the Can-Can (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2661103).
No, I am not kidding you. (Would you like a Kaiba-Jounouchi EneCon conversation a la Maple Leaf Rag (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2370095)? Kaiba gets many phone calls (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2708873), he's a busy man you know... fighting with ISONO (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm584045) and all...)

I don't even watch the show but some of the Yugioh MADs on niconico are its finest products. (I-I think I'm supposed to sound ashamed saying this) Putting aside the numerous IOSYS music mixups (how many Usatei ones are there alone? Enacon, UdeSil, Punsuka, etc) there's others that have killed me numerous times.

I figure there'll be people who get sick of it or don't find it fun (EneCon mads are the epitome of Pointlessly Stupid), and last year, I never ever ever thought I'd watch anything Yugioh-related but I totally went along with the Yugioh wave in niconico... (and still giggle at Kaiba. And actually got addicted to that Kisara version of Oyome ni Shinasai. I need help.)

And recently I saw one which I don't know how I ignored for so long (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2438279)... It was all over for me when Kaiba did that ( ゜∀゜) face, I don't know how long I kept laughing for...

(Anyone has a helpline for Yugioh MAD addicts? Please? Anyone...?)

(Ooh, and this video (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2681667) is pretty cool, I think there's similar ones on youtube... If you stare at the inverse-coloured pictures for a long time, when it's changed to black and white for a second you can see the real colours overlaid on the black and white picture!)

EDIT: And this Haruhi x Lelouch MAD (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2766889) is pretty funny too - Haruhi's been entirely replaced by Zero and his lines. My favourite bit was the uh... new meaning of SOS-Dan. :)

Recently I noticed some of the newer videos having a special function for users to "toy" with. These videos would occasionally pop-up buttons for you to click on, in which a customized reply would appear on the screen. So an uploader can place a button titled "Click Me" and the reply would be "Kyonko Moe~" or something like that.

Asamidori

That's the @Button feature, which created a total chaos two weeks ago when it was first implemented. A video produced about 2mil comments in one week, something totally impossible before. Niwango have to put a limit on only one button push per viewing because of that.

Hoho, here comes another Awareness-Raising Plea sort of video #1 in the rankings (well, as of this time)

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2778060

Something like a plea to the current anime producers for a change in the way they operate - particularly the way producers and TV stations take the bulk of the money while those actually making it (animators in particular) are being shortchanged.
(This video (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1237252) shows some leaked salary calculations from Gun x Sword, formerly known as Dan Chester Van, as well as Bamboo Blade that were being passed around some time back.*)

Discussion on the shitty conditions animators get would be offtopic, so I'd just mention that what I find interesting are the comments are a nice summary of two opinions in Japanese fandom, for and against the current model of TV airing -> DVD sales.
I see people complaining about how the Americans have it so cheap that they, the so-called original fans, feel ripped off. "If more people just paid up surely the studios would feel more confident in spending a lot on one anime, making it win-win" Some are echoing the same "the content holders should be doing more uploading" (and on nico, not Gyao or others) I see the rare Linux user complaining about how sites like Gyao suck (presumably cos of DRM) Of course there's the usual "Why the hell are you guys so desperate about anime" stuff and so on...

Considering the time right now I'm sure the comments at this point are going to be from slightly special users *cough* but maybe there'll be a nice, hot flame war in the evening.

*Some figures extracted (you probably have seen them elsewhere): A key animator makes 2000 yen (US$19) for 1 cut, which varies in length depending on the situation, and can be pretty difficult since you'd have to write down the movement needed, get the faces right, draw the key frames in a sensible manner... animators don't get more than a few cuts from a show.
And for in-between animation, say there's 4000 drawings in an anime split up over 20 people. 1 sheet = 2000yen, so one person gets 40,000yen for one episode... that's 160000 yen a month. US$1590 per month...
Worse still, the stressful job of in-between checking (iirc, you have to literally flip through ALL the frames of animation to spot any errors in tracing/in-between and correct them) gets you... 70,000 yen per month. That's US$695 in expensive, expensive Tokyo and you're royally screwed if you have to pay for your living.

Then of course there's the chart showing how tv stations/advertisers take up a good chunk of the sponsored money, which some debate but anyway... I'm sure the fans would be more than glad to advertise for you

I had thought they can't just use Gackt's name and get away with it without a single "P.S. this is a joke" disclaimer anywhere on the site...

...but it still sounds so ridiculous, does Gackt's fanbase and the Vocaloid user fanbase overlap that much? Or are they hoping more and more (even normal people) will try out simple DTM if it's got a famous voice behind it? Seeing how obsessed we can get about mere synthetic voices and create characters behind it... and how strong the community in general is, perhaps they see an Opportunity here.

Personally I hope it's just an extended joke or something - for one thing it doesn't seem like Gackt's voice is that suited for a Vocaloid and for another it's kinda not as fun when you have someone as famous as that supplying the voice...

And what the hell is the name of whatever this audio track came with?! http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2876706

I've gone through the Kaneda thing a while ago already... xD;; *remembers the first time she watches a certain seiyuu bowling event thing and Kaneda was in it* Oh god that scared the hell out of me. ;;

I didn't watch the original The Net Star too, but only searched it up 'cause I went to wandererP's そよぐ真昼の歌 and there's a buncha comments there saying the song was on Net Star. (Turned out to be just the preview picture, but the title's clearly written on there. =X )

Don't think Shachou's interview was NHK? Not sure though, the video got deleted about 20 seconds after I was done loading and watching it. (Refreshed the page and the video was gone...)

They were basing their search on Nico Nico, and nii-san has been pretty popular on there lately, so I can kinda understand why they picked KAITO over MEIKO. ...Just totally didn't expect them to play Urotanda-. I never listen to seiyuu shows most of the time so it was a bit shocking to hear Kaneda's voice come out like that... she's what, 34 or something and she sounds like she's using helium. Aargh!

jigenbakuda: I've never used NMM, but it's only a very simple slideshow maker - afaik you can only import pictures and sound tracks into it. And put transitions between the pictures. (in case you're thinking of exporting all the frames of a video as pictures and importing it in, I think there's a limit on the number of pictures you can use)

It's useful if you just want to show still pictures (like those guys distributing .zips of pictures taken off the net, of course the protective Japanese artists are rather furious about this) or you sang something as a karaoke/made your own song and just want some picture to put on it. The advantage is that people who have no clue how to encode flvs now don't have to use Windows Movie Maker or something equally crappy to upload larger .avi files; now they can use NMM and it gets directly sent to niconico. The resulting file is .swf format.

And I think 実況 (jikkyou) is what they call the second one. Also now I'm here because I just saw the ~*BEST*~ video of the whole week today: Auto- (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2908250)Mario (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2908250) Luigi Sequencer x JAM Project's GONG (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2908250).
O. M. G. that has to be the best Auto-Mario Sequencer video I have ever seen, I think. I think.... yes, yes it's either the best or definitely one of the top for sure. I mean my mouth literally opened wide and stayed there when it came to the "GONGを鳴らせ" part displayed in blocks. Never happened with Auto-Mario Sequencer before. Also, it's Luigi!
Seriously, go watch it! It must have taken an amazing effort to not just synchronize it so well to the music, but he even fit it to the lyrics in very nice ways. It helps that I love this song, but he really captured the burning spirit of it and I really felt like going outside and riding a large Luigi mecha to save the universe for a moment just now. The way he reused the おおおおお lines, the countdown, the speediness... oh I just love this.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, it's by the guy who did that awesome Auto Mario Sequencer x Danjo (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2244995) which left many people jealous, so this kind of quality is almost expected ;)

On the same day we've also got an Auto-Mario Sequencer for the Mahoujin Guru Guru ED (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2909749), Wind Climbing ~Kaze ni Asobarete~ by Aki Okui (I only remember her as the singer for one of the best anime songs out there, the ∀ Gundam ED Tsuki no Mayu) It's of course not a burning hot song like GONG and so it won't seem as amazing, but it's a pretty good one as it is so if you like AMS you should check it out.

Coincidentally the OP and ED for Mahoujin Guru Guru, both by Aki Okui, are really popular among Japanese anime fans (there's even an old 2ch parody of the OP (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm279921)) - I'm guessing the show itself was pretty popular among kids who watched it and grew up to become your current otaku, so it's become a real bit of nostalgia for them. I'm saying this because personally I don't see what's that great about the songs; they're not bad and I quite like Okui's voice but otherwise... hm.
I guess it's just like how if you play the Akazukin Chacha or Shin Hakkenden OP/ED I'll suddenly have a rush of nostalgia and want to listen to it a lot regardless of how good the song actually is (I do have the latter 2 in my playlist!) because those were some of the earliest anime I watched.

==

Oh and one last thing; I don't care if you're sick of Marisa stole the precious thing but someone drew a Death Note parody of it. I think it's cute! :< http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2882755

I watched the Gong mario sequencer, he is nothing less than kami. At first I did not recognize the song, because I only heard it on the nico medley. But I heard a different version. I just heard the one that was like, exiting the forrest is super simple, all you must do is follow something... That was highly entertaining.

What does the 8-4 mean?

wao
2008-04-06, 00:10
I forgot to mention NMM also lets you put in subtitles and transitions between the pictures, but meh.

8-4 - if I'm not wrong it's the last stage on Super Mario Brothers. (you know, starting from 1-1 all the way till 8-4) The part of the song where it appears is "僕らが行く最後の場所へ" meaning "To the last place where we will go", so... :)

I first knew about the song through the odd MAD but only really remembered it thanks to the niconico medley - sometimes when I listen to the original my head keeps continuing it with "Exiting the forest is super simple, all you do is follow these path turns" afterwards too, heheh. Even worse is when I listen to that Yugioh BGM, Critius no Yaiba (or however it's spelt) - after the first half suddenly I link to the chorus of GONG. Damn you addictive niconico medleys... messing around with my brain...

Calling me? ;P (Yes, I grew up watching that series.)

I don't know, but those songs does have a special place in my heart. Could just be that nostalgia feeling you're talking about, but yea, they're considered some of the 神曲 for me.

Another amazing thing about his series of auto-luigi is the final point, time and score totals... They're always all fixed at like "4444444" 44, etc. For the gong video everything is "15", the stars, the time, the lives, and the score.

Man, this and the Vocaloid thread are pretty much the only places where I waste my time now. But I'm sorry to mention I'm here again (I spam in this thread way too much) - this time, because of...

A Japanese fanmade (re-)dub of the 3rd episode of Gag Manga Biyori 3, Shoutoku Taishi Isshuukan (Shoutoku Taishi's One Week). One guy doing all the voices, and furthermore he had to write down the lines and record it without looking at the video (so he has to get the timing exact - in the show itself, the voices are prescored and edited to cut out breaths etc)

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2915567
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2920019 (with BGM added - if they added in sound effects it would be 100% perfect)

You have to have watched the original to really get this, and if you understand Japanese and love ridiculous crack and niconico douga I strongly recommend you do (not just that episode, but Gag Manga Biyori 1 and 2 - it's used so often as MAD material)
That is, if you haven't already.
(offtopic)Actually I'm kinda curious, anyone of you here watching Gag Manga Biyori 3? Since Dennou Coil it's the only thing airing I've been excited about. Episode 2 was a bit flat but 3 was great (I love Shoutoku Taishi and Onono Imoko, they're just fantastic but as much as I like Kaori Nazuka I think Imoko just isn't Imoko without Takepon)(/offtopic)

Right, anyway - long story short, after considering all of that I have to say with 100% conviction that if you told me this was Shoutoku Taishi's seiyuu Maeda uploading a video of himself speaking I would've believed you. Completely.

There are others who successfully emulate Shoutoku Taishi on niconico, if you search there are even people who sing like him... (stuff like the niconico medley)
Man, this guy's so good he even manages to sing unsingable stuff like the U.N. Owen Shoutoku Taishi remixes... http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/5963055

I thought the whole pizza thing was just an april fools joke... but it's real and they are tracking it?!
http://ichiba.nicovideo.jp/pizza
(Look at the top of the ichiba area on a video for more. I guess the little image (http://ichiba.nicovideo.jp/images/pizza_button.gif) is actually the new thing and why I never noticed they kept the pizza thing.)

Also the Lantis no Kanzume (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2931961) is out. I don't like the song choices at all. The singing seems good, but I just can't get interested in the songs.

wao

I thought the pizza wasn't a joke from the begnining anyway

And I'm listening to the Lantis no Kanzume right now, the first two tracks were not bad (personally I've always loved Shachou's voice and I like Maggare↓Spectacle so I approve of the song - but Shachou, please move house ASAP! And I wish he'd include a bit more variation in tone like the original) Sariya-jin is really lovely as usual.

But... I don't recognize most of the songs! The singing is good but after the first 2 the only one I know is Misoji Misaki... Well I guess if a song is really popular it costs more and the CD's price would go up too much so they had to do with this.

Definitely something I'd listen to rather than the Lantis Kumikyoku. If someone made MADs with these songs I didn't know I might listen to them a lot more; after all a lot of otherwise so-so songs can become "favourites" if they're used well. It's not that often you find songs that are just amazing on their own, compared to the amount of stuff released out there...

For laughs, here is where each song is from (I knew half and I searched the other half):

1. Rumbling Hearts(METAL of Rumbling Hearts) / Assuming original, based on song from Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
2. まっがーれ↓スペクタクル / Itsuki's Character CD, Suzumiya Haruhi series.
3. 鮮血の誓い / Renkin san Kyuu Magical Pokan Op
4. ディアノイア / Saishuu Shiken Kujira
5. Once&Forever / From the PC game Muv-Luv Alternative (?)
6. 暁に咲く詩 / Da Capo Still Sh Second Season ED
7. シカイダーの詩 / Possibly original, based on the Shirashi Minoru ending song シカイダーの唄 for Lucky Star
8. Faze to love / Gunparade Orchesta OP
9. 慟哭ノ雨 / Koi Suru tenchi angelique OP
10. 三十路岬 / Akira's character song from Lucky Star
11. INSANITY / Muv-Luv Alternative(??)

(#5 doesn't appear at all on the Lantis site for some reason.)

It can be one of several different messages. It's usually a notice that the video has been taken down for whatever reason.

Here are the current ones:
Black background + scrolling text = Removed by request of copyright owner. (Kenrisha is the word in this one)
Dancing robots playing instruments (Formerly niceboat)= Deleted by uploader. (Uploader is the word in this one)
Music instruments being played by falling light= Deleted for breaking one of the rules. (Naiyou is the word here)

Umm, "ya ra na i ka" is set in stone it seems. Now I can't help be really really want to hear Isaji sing it.

Link to two that sang it afterward:

【ニコニコ動画流星群】先走って歌ってみた★うさぎ (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2963076) - Super cute <3 & ikemen voice here and there & skipped stuffs she doesn't know. Totally moe'd over her voice even if I'm a girl.

ニコニコ動画流星群、歌ってみたしらき (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2963298) - Freedom. xD

It's actually surprising how some people actually have a good voice, but they're shadowed by the famous singers out there.

Original songs version → ニコニコ動画流星群を元の曲で再現してみた(とりあえず版) (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2964683) - The ending chaos part is treated similar to ニコニコ動画物語.wav, if anyone ever heard that one before.

This chick knows much more of the lyrics than anyone else I heard. She sang the best too. Still have not heard a full version (lyrically) of the song... when should that happen. I love this song. The video with the anime is so great, and it was up fast, with a lot of quality too. Man this thing is growing too fast... These videos are getting way popular, really quick. How long has it been? So I finally watched that damn ryuuseigun thing, and without looking at any song lists this is what I guessed while watching it:

1 - jihou
2 ?
3 - kagamin's character song
4 - caramelldansen
5 - gurume race bgm
6 - nowhere
7 - cheetahman
8 - loituma
9 - that yaranaika/balalaika song
10 - danjo
11 - IYEEAAAAH
12 - macdonalds
13 - ruroken BGM
14 - ?
15 - mirai he no whatchacallit
16 - airman ga taosenai
17 - melt
18 - dango daikazoku
19 - ? (sounded vaguely like utena but isn't)
20 - nagato yuki's character song
21 - you
22 - marisa wa taihen na (ry
23 - u.n. owen wa kanojo (ry
24 - oyome ni shinasai
25 - okkusenman
26 - that onani song??
27 - god bless
28 - the geass 2nd OP?
29 - ?
30 - tomatte made massugu (ry
31 - ?
32 - ?
33 - sounds familiar but I dunno
34 - the agent whachamacallit aka tokachi
35 - nanoha?? native face?
36 - kishimen
37 - yatta!
38 - mikkumikku ni shite (ry
39 - let's go onmyouji
40 - marisa again?

Yeah, I type (ry when I'm stuck for time, I'm such a pathetic weeaboo sorry I'll go repent in a corner.

I missed 7 entire songs!! I probably didn't recognize he had switched them (probably includes some back-melodies that I couldn't hear on the first try). Not too good I guess, but I should be happy about this :p I need to spend less time on niconico!

But I'm personally a tad miffed that there isn't a single Yugioh-related song (maybe I missed it, I don't think so) despite there being Yanmani, which hasn't been popular on niconico for quite some time... I have to admit being partial to the songs used on it now because niconico is the only one out of two things to convert me to actually being interested in the damn show (the other being the abridged series)
So I suppose I wish there was Critias no Yaiba or those other BGM like those known as "Gacchaman" or "Lotteria~" by fans (damned if I know the real names).

On the other hand it was about time something like this came up, what with the Hatsune Miku boom. So yay!

And I suppose it isn't as instantly catchy as the kumikyoku, but I think I can get used to it. In fact, I probably will. Although I give up on following all the various singers and who's going to sing it - I spend way too much time on niconico as it is... orz

I'd guess it probably doesn't have any Yugioh because enemy controller is the only really hot Yugioh thing right now and it doesn't have its own song. Also, yaiba? Isn't it Kiba (Fang)? Or am I missing something...

(I don't even think many of the fans know the right names beside Critias because of the excessive use of the other names.)

Depends on how you sort the search results.

Default tag search is set to sort videos by the time of the newest comment that video recieves.

Please excuse the possible Engrish. I r no native English speaker.
