There's no side effect, I'm sure of it since it wasn't mentioned in the anime, even if there is a side effect, I don't think death will be the price.

Actually, novels are done with volume 14 (was 12 the end of the running plot?), and the "EX" compilation just released has a bunch of "if" (alternate path/omake) stories in it. That being said, I'm not sure how far into the novels the first anime went.

Well...good to know the story is over. Now if only we could figure out how it went.

Great to see the elephant king again. I was hoping for a conclusion to Karou, but no matter the elephants made up for it being a re-make of one of the series arcs.

The subtitles are in the fansub, but you have a playback problem. I'd suggest that you give up on vlc since it doesn't always work with modern fansubs, particularly softsubbed anime like this. I'd recommend that you follow the advice here to get them to play properly.

The short version: Install CCCP and use the included Media Player Classic to play the anime.

If after following that advice you still have trouble, please post about it in the Playback Help forum.
