Hey!
Ugh..lately every anime that I've been watching has ditsy or stupid girls. It's getting rather annoying...so please do me a favour and tell me one that doesn't have them, and is along these lines:

1. Has romance
2. Has also another genre besides romance, such as: mecha, mystery, thriller, suspense, action, etc
3. Strong leads
4. LOTS OF TWISTS! XD tragedies in the middle and all..happy ending perhaps?

Anime's I've watched: Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Panic The Second Raid, Eureka 7, Card Captor Sakura, Fate / Stay Night, Shakugan no Shana, Inu Yasha, Gunparademarch, Escaflowne, Fushigi Yuugi, Mai Hime...

Sounds like you need a heaping plate of Zero no Tsukaima with a side order of Tsukihime.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien fits your description almost exactly. I'm not sure what you mean by giddy girls, but if they are giddy, only the first two episodes takes place in high school. The rest takes places when the characters are grown up. It doesn't really have another genre except drama, but I can classify it as suspence.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo are both sci-fi/fantasy/romance/drama and they're both very serious also. The first one has a male lead and the second one has a female lead. They're both movies.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya offers a variety of genres although it's not a good choice if you're new to anime. Consider this series if you're in for something interesting and new.

Try My Otome. However, romance there is only in form of a couple of side stories.

Rahxephon-Romance, Mecha, Drama
Suzuka-Romance; the girl here is exactly what you want.
Shakugan no Shana- Second season in october.
Elemental Gelade-Romance, Action, Adventure
Busou Renkin- there is a giddy/stupid girl but she is NOT the main character so she does not appear much she is only the sister of the main but still does not appear much.
Beck:Mongolian Chop Squad- Music (rock), drama.

Full Metal Panic. Even if you don't like the first season, stick through it, since The Second Raid is a real doozy.

saiunkoku monogatari - strong female lead. lots of twist..... has some romance/ action/adventure/historical/political but first season is licensed
good witch of the west - based from novel with strong fairy tale background, romance/action/adventure
