Somehow, I enjoyed writing about Matsuri more than my other OC's, despite the fact that she has no H4XX powers, no complex history, no cool devices, not even mage powers.

Which in turn made me think up of a scenario sooooooo freaking.... you'll just have to read to find out.

“Now…

How do I make this work?”

Matsuri was curious. Incredibly curious. She looked at the object in front of her with discerning analyzing eyes, eyes that looked as though they can dismantle an object through the sheer act of viewing.

The object in question was an amber basketball-sized transparent sphere, mounted on a white flat circular base. Despite its smooth surface the interior of the ball appeared to compose of hundreds of small triangular golden facets, forming a complex polyhedron that glistened in the light. The entire surface of the structure seemed to be coated in a thin layer of some oil-like substance, which appeared to shift slowly across the shape, in a display of flowing streams, fleeting swirls and spirals. The patterns were a mesmerizing sight… and yet try as she might, she still could not discern the inner workings of the sphere.

She held the object in her hands as she plopped herself back on her soft bed, raising the sphere high above her as she stared at it once more. The sphere reflected and refracted the white light from the room’s ceiling mounted circular fluorescent lamp around itself, producing even more strange motions and delicate visual patterns. The sight could bring no consolation though and she sighed in resignation. Why was she so interested in it in the first place?

It was only a few hours ago that she had received this unusual object. Or rather, borrowed it.

She recalled how she had seen the object amongst the other rubble that her Uncle Turing seemed to have collected in his lab. The normally pristine room was filled in one corner with what appeared to be a heap of… stuff. Metallic bars, shiny rods, glowing staves, shining cubes, and other odd assortment of items of all shapes, sizes and colors littered the place haphazardly in, as she described it, “a macroscopic display of high entropy”. Translated from her scientifically derived terminology, it was an appallingly hideous example of complete and utter chaos, deprived of all semblance of order. Her only possible reaction was to sigh hopelessly at the sight, palm to face.

“Spring Cleaning.” Was the only explanation her Uncle provided for the disheveled mound as he shrugged, before returning his attentions to the monitor in front of him. At the very least, she took comfort in the fact that she would not be responsible for cleaning up this mess.

Amidst the mound, a soft yet bright golden glow had caught her eye, swamping all the other lights emitted by the multitude of other objects in the mound. Removing some red-rimmed orange goggles here, a small yellow conical spiral drill there, a red star shaped pair of shades, a bearded disembodied bald head in a bulb jar prop, and some other obstructions, she had managed to reach the source of the glow and retrieve it from the rubble.

“Uncle, you know what this is?” She asked her uncle, still looking at the glowing golden orb she held in front of her.

“That Matsuri, would be a precognitive extrapolation emotion sensor sphere. I prefer to just call it 'The Orb'.” The old uncle replied without even looking up at her.

Incredulity filled her tone. “Precognitive? As in to see the future?”

“In a way yes. It’s very much like Laplace Daemon computer, that consumes present variables, number crunches them, and then spits it out as a concrete visualization of what it think could happen in the near future, from an hour from now, to the events from next year.”

Experience had long told her that any attempt to concretely visualize the future was a possibility only present in science-fiction or fantasy stories. It was a concept that was too good to be true, a fallacy borne out of wishful thinking and imagination. But given what she had learned about the operation and abilities of dimensional magic in the past six months, she was now more than willing to at least lend an open mind to the concept. Nonetheless, as she observed the object, her reservations still kept her judgment at bay.

“Nonetheless, you’re telling me it can only calculate the future based on the present then?”

“Precisely. It works on a similar principle to modern computer simulation programs, only several times more powerful.”

That explanation, she could accept without question.

“Ah, but the beauty of lies in it use of emotions as the biggest variable in its calculation.”

Now, her confusion once again resurfaced to this new information. “Emotion? In a Laplace Computer?”

“You must understand. Not everything is built for a serious purpose. Spheres like these were created for mindless entertainment and nothing more. What emotions you experience, and what thoughts enter your mind now will affect the image that the sphere projects. A happy emotion brings about happy scenarios, and a sad emotion creates a depressing scene. It’s a device meant to be crazy and unpredictable.”

She wasn’t quite sure she bought that one. Already the description of the device was a contradiction of functions. Though the intrigue brought by such an outlandish concept behind to what amounted to a future projection computer was ever-present, and slowly swaying her judgment.

“Try it.” The old man spoke as he worked. “The sphere works only through the input of strong emotional and mental thoughts of the recipient holding it. Once activated it will work automatically without further input.”

Doubt was still a big presence in her mind. Nonetheless, the very same scientific mind that created that doubt further fuelled her curiosity. There’s nothing she could lose if it didn’t work right? And if it did, she could expand her horizons further.

She made up her mind. She would try out the sphere, and determine the extent of its abilities… if it functioned at all.

“I’ll try it out then!”

“That’s all fine and dandy,” her uncle replied, but his next words puzzled her. “… but don’t try it out here. Or I won’t be able to sleep tonight.”

“Won’t be able to sleep tonight? What did he mean?” She asked herself, as she continued to lie in her bed, looking up at the object, stubbornly refusing to work. The flows and currents inside the sphere seemed to taunt her with each spin, their unceasing motion a mockery to her mental intellect. Movement which could not be affected, or manipulated by anything she physically did to the object. And with each second she watched with no visible effect her frustration only grew to the point of irritation. Strong emotional and mental thoughts… what could she possibly do to force a reaction out of this thing?

The ringing of the phone was a welcome interruption from her current problem, and she put aside the bothersome sphere on the pillow to her left before picking up the phone.

“Good evening, Matsuri Miyama speaking!”

And the voice at the other end was none other than her Shinji.

“Oi, Konbawa!” He greeted cheerfully, albeit in a tired and huffing voice.

“Konbawa?”

“It’s… good evening… in Japanese.”

“Remind me again why I’m supposed to be Japanese?”

“Because… you were born there?”

“Asides from that flimsy reason. God I can’t even speak my own native language properly.” She paused, listening to his ragged breathing. He was almost wheezing, and coughing in between breaths.

“Shinji you alright? You sound tired.” She asked out of concern. It had only been a day since the three AI’s had been installed in their Matrix Projection bodies, and Kay had taken them out to various gyms and parks in the county, physically training them to better synchronize with their new bodies. And from what she had seen earlier in Seminole Park that day, Kay had been pushing them incredibly hard. Back-breaking physical exertion. Strength tests. Aerobic exercise. Repeated in an endless yet ever escalating cycle of difficulty, threatening to approach the breaking point, to the limit of their endurance.

“I’m… very much… okay.” His reply being broken as he tried to catch his breath. “Don’t worry about it! Tis’ is nuthin!” he replied, attempting a slanted accent, yet still breathing heavily. Despite his reassurance, her uneasy worry still lingered, and it was still evident in her voice.

“I know that your artificial bodies are tougher than most, but don’t overexert yourselves alright?”

“We won’t. Kay’s letting us rest for a few minutes now.” His voice was steadier now, and much clearer. “Thanks for you concern Matsuri. Suddenly feels like I can stay up all night for some more!”

“Hey, I didn’t warn you just so you can punish yourself some more!” she chided at him, and yet with a playful tone.

“Gomen gomen! But I never knew pushing my body to the limit felt this good though!”

His enthusiastic reply somehow brought a strange relief to her concerns, even if she still worried for his present condition. His breathing was softer now, almost soothing to hear. A relaxing hum emanating from his lips, through the earpiece and unto her own ears, where she enjoyed just hearing him breathe. It was a sound the calmed her nerves and eased her mind. She held on to the phone, wishing to hear every rhythm of him, closing her eyes to shut off the rest of the world.

Just him, and the sound of the life that flowed inside him.

“Matsuri?” Shinji asked concerned, breaking the silence.

“It’s alright, I’m still here.” She replied weakly, softly.

“Listening to something?”

“Just your breathing.”

“Oh?”

“It’s relaxing.”

He didn’t reply. But she still felt his unmistakable presence on the line through the sound of his respiration.

For that moment, that precious moment of silence between them, as she listened to his gentle inhalation. Even through this place in time devoid of sound, both conveyed more than they ever could with just their words. An understanding between them. His silence telling her how much he cared for the trivial things she loved. And she listened. Even for such a normally underappreciated act as living through the air that they depend on that most wouldn’t think twice about. The oxygen of this planet that they both shared. And so she listened, in the still emptiness of the night.

A beep from the receiver warned her of the end of this cherished moment.

“Next time Matsuri, I’ll get more quarters.”

“You do that.”

“Or I could spare the expense. Just throw me a hug, on the house. How’s that?”

She could only smile at the playful suggestion. “Unfair! Add in some extra kisses and we might just have a deal!”

“I accept your terms!”

In the background, an older female voice could be heard calling for Shinji through the earpiece.

“Break’s over that’s for sure. We’ll be up all night, so I’ll be seeing you tomorrow then.”

“Uhm.” She muttered softly in reply. “Remember what I told you. Try not to push yourself too hard alright?”

“I’ll try not to. Don’t know about Asuka and Rey though. They’re more eager than I am!”

“Tell them I said that as well!”

“I will! Goodnight then Matsuri!”

“And the same to you Shinji. Take care now!”

“Hai!”

And the other side hung up, ending the call.

A sigh escaped her lips as she replaced the receiver on its cradle, a sigh of contented happiness. She couldn’t have asked for a better way to end her day, and couldn’t imagine such a thing.

Sleep was beckoning for her, and she wanted to just pleasantly dream her way to tomorrow. All that was left to do was remove that bothersome yellow sphere on her pillow. Its activation can wait, and the day ahead would offer her lots of time to further ponder on its workings.

No sooner had she touched the sphere did it suddenly flare in a bright golden glow, startling her witless. Even as she hastily removed her hands the object kept glowing, its light gradually reducing in brightness and intensity.

And then she heard… breathing.

Respiration belonging to a young female voice. A female voice that moaned softly in between breaths. A voice that was uncannily and inexplicably familiar, like she had known that tone for her whole life.

Because it was unmistakably her own.

And as she gazed into the object, her eyes opened wide as they basked upon an indescribably amazing sight. An incredulous sight, so shocking, so unexpected, so far-fetched, so unbelievable, so astonishing that her mind went blank, and her wide gaping mouth could only utter two incomprehensible words…

“Oh my…”

Okay, my first attempt at writing something other than my blog posts and project/assignment documentations.

I think my writing style is a bit formal somehow, and a bit stoic (if you can call writing stoic). I just hope it doesn't come across as bland and boring. But if it does feel free to tell me how I can improve. One can never be a good enough writer, no?

Warning: Lots of text. Btw I wonder, how much of text is a Bluecheesium?

It was the library nearby that loomed forebodingly ahead. Slowly, it appeared to draw closer and closer, ever closer. The door creaked as it swung outwards slowly and the entrance came into view, as if to welcome those that seek the wealth of knowledge within.

It was dark inside; one could make out the tables and chairs and bookshelves within but not much else. The scene moved nearer, as if it was a TV screen that is gradually zooming closer to it. As the bookshelves came closer to view, a blue glow can be seen emanating from one of the shelves. There is an unearthly feeling to it, a feeling that is not of this world. The scene continued to moved toward that bookshelf and stopped, in front of the object that is glowing, a book.

A hand picks that book out of the shelf and upon close inspection it is actually a hardbound tome rather than a book. Still glowing, the tome flips open, and reveals…

“WAKE UP YOU LAZY BUM TIME FOR SCHOOL”, a roar close enough to rupture his eardrums shocked Itsuki out of his dream. Waking up with a start, he clutched the sides of his heads and groaned at the sudden and extremely unwelcome wake up call.

Blearily opening his eyes, Itsuki blinked a few times before registering the face of his friend who shared the same room with him in the small orphanage that they lived in. Glaring at Hotaro, the vile perpetrator and the one who dared disturbed his blissful sleep; Itsuki proceeded to give him a piece of his mind.

BAM! CRASH! Footsteps could be heard approaching quickly as the other residents of the orphanage came to investigate what happened. The door opens and the lady who is in charge of taking care of the kids within the orphanage stood there with an exasperated expression on her face. Itsuki was comically trying to wring the life out of Hotaro.

“Again? This early in the morning?” said the lady.

“Its Hotaro’s fault! He almost ruptured my eardrums!” cried Itsuki indignantly as he glared at Hotaro, whose mouth hung open and looked like his soul had left his body.

Recovering his disposition, Hotaro shook his head and retorted, “Its because you wouldn’t wake up no matter what I tried, you super sleepyhead. Do you realize we’re gonna be late for school if you don’t get ready to go soon?”

Silence…Itsuki glanced at the clock and it showed 8:10 am. He blinked a few times again, clearly still a bit fuddle minded despite the ruckus, and yelled “Oh crap school is starting in 20 minutes I’m going to be late! Idiot Hotaro why didn’t you wake me up!”

Hotaro frowned when he heard that and chose not to comment. “Alright I can still make it if I run!” said Itsuki as he dashed off to the washroom to wash up.

Lydia, the lady who ran the orphanage, sighed and called out saying “have some toasts and a glass of milk before you go off!” as she went back to doing her morning chores.

10 minutes later~

“Ahhhh c’mon Hotaro what’re you waiting for? Lets make a run for it or we’ll have to stand out on the corridor for one period again like idiots!” shouted Itsuki as he broke into a run down the street in the direction of his school.

“And whose fault was that….” Muttered Hotaro as he started running after Itsuki.

Lunch break later that day~

Hotaro and Itsuki were up on the roof of their school munching on some buns and onigiri they bought for lunch. They weren’t the only ones around, as it’s a favourite lunch spot for many others.

Taking a bite out of his onigiri, Itsuki recalled just beating their homeroom teacher to class by a minute or so and said, “it’s a good thing we ran or we would have been late.”

“Are you still talking about that? You should be grateful that I woke you up in time, if only barely. One period isn’t that long but holding up a cardboard that says ‘I will not be late again’ and standing out on the corridor isn’t just tiring but lame.” Retorted Hotaro as he bit into his share of onigiri viciously.

“Hey Hotaro, ever had a dream that was so weird yet interesting that you just want to continue seeing it, but as soon as you wake up have no recollection of, and that all you remembered was that it was mysterious and interesting?” asked Itsuki as he finished his lunch.

Hotaro frowned for a moment at the weird question before replying, “Well, I’d think one time or another everyone would have one of those dreams but I never seem to remember what they were ever about though. Why do you ask?”

“Hmm……… nothing. Just wondering.” Replied Itsuki non-commitally.

‘Damn…I was sure it was about discovering some mysterious object or something, somewhere. But I can’t remember anything about it. Must have been ‘cause that idiot Hotaro scrambled my dream patterns or whatever you call it when he tried to split my eardrums.’ Mused Itsuki as he stared into space.

Hotaro saw the expression on this friend’s face and decided to be silent and just relax, knowing that his friend doesn’t like to be shake out of his thoughts when he was like that.

Later~

School was over and most were either going home or staying back for club activities, Hotaro being one of the latter. Itsuki decided to drop by the library nearby to borrow an adventure or fantasy book, his favourite genre.

The sky had darkened and looked like it was about to rain soon. Rain clouds gather and bloated the sun out as a prelude to a typical spring shower. Recalling that he hadn’t bothered to bring along an umbrella with him, he decided to increase the pace on his walk towards the library.

Approaching his destination, he saw it against a backdrop of the ominous sky. His eyebrow twitched, as he scene seemed vaguely familiar somehow, but shrugged it off and continued on towards the entrance.

The door creaked slightly as he opened it and Itsuki couldn’t help but comment, “hmm…a lil’ rusty ain’t it?” Stepping inside he found it to be dark, the people inside were whispering and wondering what was going on.

“Huh? What’s up here?” wondered Itsuki.

Just then a librarian announced “our sincerest apologies to all of you visiting the library today. We seem to have a black out here but don’t worry its only temporary. We’ll be using a generator, which will give us enough current to keep our lights on. Regrettably, our computers won’t be usable till regular electricity returns. Thank you for being patient and enjoy your time.”

“Black out eh? Ahh what a bother” sighed Itsuki theatrically. A sudden flash caught his attention and he blinked in the direction it came from but it was gone. Glancing around, it seemed as if no one else noticed it, which was extremely odd.

He decided to check it out and strode over to the direction where he saw that flash of light. He started to feel something within pulsing slightly. It wasn’t his heart, but something was definitely beating, with a pulse like that of a heart beat only that instead of blood it sent tingles down his entire body.

“What’s…this…Feeling…something…” Itsuki continued on and stopped in front of a shelf in a corner of the library where he thought he saw the flash from.

“Think it’s ‘round here…” THUMP! The other ‘heart’ seem to be resonating with another ‘pulse’ he could somehow sense, which is now very near him. He turned…and saw the tome…glowing softly with an unearthly light.

“That’s…” recognition dawned then. Everything was exactly the same as the dream he saw when he was still asleep during the morning before Hotaro woke him up.

He picked up the tome from the shelf, and the glow started to die down as he flipped the cover of the book.

“I woke up as I was trying to flip open this book in my dreams…I wonder if its some special edition book that’s made of glow-in-the-dark material or something.” He mused.

He flipped the pages, all its content of a language he didn’t recognized. “This…language! ……Isn’t Japanese right?” was his only thought as he studied the characters, albeit it would have definitely brought a fist down his head for asking such an obvious and stupid question were Hotaro there.

Oddly, there was no library tag anywhere on the book, electronic or otherwise. “This book doesn’t belong here? It looks old and different from the books I normally see.”

He continued flipping through the pages and saw something he didn’t really like all too well, “these…are…math formula???”

“Is this a…scientific research journal?” he wondered. He really isn’t all too fond of science and math, but the thought of learning another language intrigued him, and if he were to start somewhere then the tome looked as good a place to start as any.

He cocked his head as he considered, and thought ‘Not a problem! I’ll ask around. The letters are Latin characters, so it must be some European language.’ He copied a sample sentence from the first page of the book and decided to come back the next day and use the Internet facilities available in the library.

The next day~

Itsuki kept his discovery from everyone else, worrying that they would think he had lost his mind. Right after school, he headed straight for the library again. He showed the sentence he copied the day before to one of the librarians there who said, “oh…that’s German. Are you interested in learning? I think there’re some Japanese-German dictionary around in the language section, and you could try the Internet too.”

It was certainly unusual though, because Itsuki couldn’t recall there being a lot of German books in this library. Dictionaries are almost a given, but most Japanese wouldn’t have a reason to read German books so there weren’t many around.

He decided to go back to the shelf he found the book the day before and found it at the same spot, once again glowing at his approach, as if it was welcoming him back.

‘Odd…you’d think someone else would’ve noticed the glow it gives off by now’ he mused.

He took the tome off the shelf once again, feeling it pulsing under his touch, and stared at its title, which he now knows is German.

‘This book is really mysterious…no, its more like a tome. Those old and dusty ones you read about in fantasy storybooks and see in some anime. So that would mean this tome is really old huh? Seems pretty well cared for actually.’

[“Tome des Weckens”] reads the title of the book. “Okay Tome des Weckens! Whatever that mean…anyhow I hereby declare Project Learn-how-to-speak-German an official Itsuki spring project!” he shouted excitedly, prompting an angry admonishment from a librarian nearby.

“Ehehehe…sorry ‘bout that.” Tittered Itsuki.

Months later~

It was months after Itsuki discovered that tome, known as the “Tome of Awakening”. Not a name that fits a scientific journal, which was his initial believe of what it was. Revelations proved to be nothing short of…amazing.

Near the orphanage where he stayed, Itsuki was hiding in a small shed compiling whatever he had learn of the German language and of the tome so far, which he sneaked out of the library. A few days after he made up his mind to uncover the ‘secrets’ of the tome, he decided to just take it out of the library since it was obvious by then that the tome didn’t belong to the library. A dictionary was sufficient in his “quest for knowledge” (that was what he told himself when in actual fact he was plain curious), and any other ambiguous phrase or words could always be copied and has its meaning check whenever he visits the library.


Picking up bits of new words here and there, he slowly pieced them together and began to read of many things he found skeptical to believe in. ‘Magic (magie)’ was one of those words, which he understood but was skeptical of. Then there was ‘Belka’, ‘Linker core’, and ‘Knights (ritter)’ among many other terms, some familiar and some not.

In all seriousness, Itsuki would have believed it to be a fantasy storybook written in German. However that wasn’t the case as the tome’s contents were not exactly talking about stories. While it certainly had a few chapters of history on some unknown civilization, the book also contained numerous figures and pictures, as well as mathematical formula. That was the reason he thought the tome was a scientific journal in the first place.

‘Is this…pseudo-magic? I’ve always thought magic to be innate but if it can be somewhat explained scientifically, that would kinda throw all that stories tell us way off. This tome must be some sick prank of some weird scientist somewhere.’ He thought.

Still, it didn’t explain why he felt strange whenever he came within a certain radius of the tome.

“Heh… real or not, lets find out. I’ve always dream of being able to wield magic, even though I really know it can never exist. Now that something is telling me otherwise, even if it’s a prank there’s no harm making sure right? Being able competently read and understand the contents in this tome seems like it’ll be worth more than just learning a new language.”

New possibilities and new paths will surely open, if the contents of the tome were to be true. Should that happen, he would want to take the path less taken, and open the door to a future no other can envision.

Far, far from the lunar ship, the Menos warrior emerged from the wreck of his Practical Trooper, astride his Aibamshin and stringing the spiral Tausend Kreuz Caladbolg II on his bow like Kha always did.

"I borrowed Kha-danchou's cross for luck, and now I make this sword mine!"

Kha glanced up from his HUDs in alarm. "ISHIDA-TAICHOU!"

Meanwhile, Ishida looked down on his bike and whispered, "I'm sorry for having to drag you along, Tokoyama."

Even though the barrier counter on Tokoyama was running down at a dizzy rate, the assault cycle neighed in spirited acceptance.

Ishida smiled. "Arigatou, Tomoyo..."

He glared up at the swirling hole of violent radiation in timespace.



"Let me show you the might of the Seiou!" Ishida barked his trigger command, his Mark of the Seiou coming to blue fire. "Hoero, boku no Menos!"

The captain waved the Caladbolg II at the roiling void of space.



"Koetsu ga Kha no--

"Dai-Baason Dan no--

"Seiou no--

"IYA! KORE ORE-SAMA NO TAMASHII DAAAA!"

He was grinning like a madman, feeling more alive than he had ever been.

"With this, I'll tear you bastards to bits!!!"

He ignited with the green flames of Spiral strength as the Knight made his valiant charge.

"SAINT!"

He raised his bow.

"KING!"

He pulled back on the yew.

"GIGA!"

The sword imbibed his Spirality, and exploded with force, renewed and spinning. It grew faster, louder, bigger, as strong as his heart would ever be.

"DORIRU!"

And Menos Captain Ishida Uryuu released his last arrow.

"BUREKAAAAAA!!!"



"So this is Spiral power, eh?" Ishida grinned. "Sure was worth the effort... Hehehe..."
