I'm going to 2nd Seijisensei's recommendation on Hataraki Man, it's an anime for adults that deals with very familiar situation at work

Saiunkoku Monogatari is ok if you liked 12 kingdom, it's heavier on the shoujo overtone but underneath that is a very intelligent anime with many Confucius philosophy in it. A must watch if you love oriental style story.

Seirei no Moribito is also a must watch, another oriental fantasy that would appeal to both gender with it's much more mature plot/story and high production value. Darker than Black as well but it's more of a supernatural 007-esque story (psychic, ESP).

Azumanga Daioh is another very good comedy anime for those new to anime and appeals to both sexes.
