Another point of Mai HiME was to show the many different kinds of love that exist, and how they are all worth fighting for. We had the sibling love of Mai/Takumi, Nao's clinging to her mother with the hope that she might someday wake, Yukino and her quiet love for Haruka, Fumi's respect and gratitude toward Mashiro, Yukariko's guilty desire for Ishigami...the list goes on. Shizuru was there to demonstrate painful unrequited love and how it can drive people to do things they never thought they would, so her role wasn't pointless.

Hmm, Shizuru did help Natsuki from falling too far into herself back when she was still in junior high, but revealing Natsuki's true nature...? I think Mai did more for that than Shizuru did.

I think you can. Why don't other ships get equal billing I know it's not because ShizNat is pretty canon because most shows have more fans of crack pairings than they do the canon ones. Either way this is not the issue at hand. What I want is Harukas head smashing into Shizuru's in a display of cajones that would put the manliest man to shame.
