Spoiler for Ending:
It's Gainax.

But to answer your questions, the setup for her eventual disappearance began long before that episode. It's wasn't just out of left field. Besides, she died happy. Her life meant something.

Simon never wanted to be in the spotlight in the first place.

And everyone gets old eventually. It's a fact of life. (Well, except Viral.) I'm personally glad that they showed that.

The ending made perfect sense. I thought it was rather beautiful.

lolwut? Eww.

Also, surprised how nobody commented on her wedding dress becoming anti-spiral too (only read upto pg 37 of thread, so might've been brought up already). She's been holding onto Simon (mixing up salivas and whatnot), he should've disappeared too and same with her ring.

I thought the same thing when I watched that scene, too! (I just never thought about questioning it.)

Holy s***, this was a hell of an anime.... never seen something this amazing....
I thought FMA was god-like, but this one kicks away everything... Its been years since i was this excited about an anime....
but that ending was really full of melancholy.... i hate endings like that but i think it was and fitting end for an impressive anime like gurren-lagann.

wow. this series def deserves a spot in my top 5 all time favs.

its amazing gigantic epic. buuut the ending.. ahhh the ending made me sad. it felt like final fantasy 10 all over again..

simon reacted kinda cool tho. he knew it for a while so i guess he prepared himself..

no mater how desperate i want a 2nd season.. i think the scens in the end fitted to end the story. the tale of simon the digger is toled..

That Simon and Nia didn´t cry but instead ended it with a kiss, smiles and "I love you" made it feel like they had promised eachother to do so. It made the ending so beautiful and it certainly gave me a (big) lump in the throat. It made my little sister cry her eyes out. But even so it felt unnecessary and almost evil. Antilove Gainax... (Atleast I tried to be funny, that has got to count for something, right?)

(Seeing Yoko old felt even more unnecessary. )

All in all a great show though.

Funny how you question this, when five minutes prior they had been throwing galaxies around like shuriken....

I'm going to hide a huge long coat under my tuxedo jacket when I attend my own wedding. Then I'll throw the ring I gave her on the ground, pretend she disappeared, walk away, reveal my badass longcoat, and wait for someone to throw me the ring I threw.

Someone will record it, put it on Nico or YouTube, and it shall be known as the wedding of awesomeness.

God, that ending weighs heavy. It leaves itself open for a sequel but I doubt it'll come.

ending was awesome! gave me a "complete" kind of feeling. Definately one of the best i've see. But when i look back @ the first ep. intro, it showed Simon and Boota giving orders to fire etc, how is that connected to the ending? i mean boota was in a uniform and everything, and as far as i know he turned back into original form? and what was the heavy chains i hear when simon was walking?

The anime was tottaly epic, they should have just ended it at the wedding and it would have been the most epic anime ever

The intro and the end-of-series result was the fault of the people behind the show. Apparently, at the beginning, the original idea for the later episodes was what you saw in the episode one intro. But by the time they got into making the space episodes, their ideas were completely different and they didn't want to change them back.

So now it is just an interesting boo-boo in Gurren Lagann. XD

Did anybody else feel sorry for Yoko? I mean she loved Kamina who proceeded to die immediately after and then when there was potential with Kittan he got vaporized also immediately after. In the end she just ends up by herself, seems like a pretty sad and lonely fate. Yeah, she's got the kids and all but with the bitter-sweet ending for Simon I would have at least liked to see things turn out better for her.
