We don't if Komillia joined UN Spacy like her counterpart in Macross 2036. So at very least Max and Millia only had one daughter in the military. |

Well, just to shake things up a bit - and, likely to fill a bit of the void left by MF ending - I've started to watch this series. So far, I haven't really grasped why so many people (not only here) complain about this series. Granted, I'm still not even ten episodes in, but I quite like the setting, the characters (gotta love Max) and the music. Let's see if that changes...

It's not so much the series itself that people complain about but a certain crazy haired singer. Though that will change toward the middle and end of the series. I think if one realizes they aren't suppose to really identify with Basara (normally that might be the case as he's presented as one of the main characters) but the other characters they'll enjoy the series more from the start. Mylene (who is the true main character I feel) and Gamlin are suppose to be the gateway characters.
I considering rewatching Macross 7 again myself now that Macross Froniter is over. While it was great outside of the battles I think I still enjoy Macross 7 more due to the characters and story. Though I wish it had MF's animation. The Macross 7 battles would be insane with updated animation. |

Yeah, I thought the Dynamite 7 songs were kinda lacking compared to the TV series ones, although New Frontier came closest. Try Again remains my favorite Fire Bomber song to date, followed by Totsugeki Love Heart.

MF is great revival of the Macross series but it's seriously lacking in depth and story.
It has maybe just 1/4 of M7's story and my main complaint with MF is the chars developments are too shallow and rushed. Alto is extremely boring at times compare to even Hibiki from Macross 2. We know he's good but too good like Tom Cruise. Sheryl at times is frustrating to watch, she was so confident of herself but around Alto she acts like so weak and their relationship is a snooze, hardly any chemistry. Ranka is probably more interesting than the other 2, because she actually changed the most but at best her char is just a supporting role. M7 while people complain the most about Basara singing during battles, nobody seems to complain about Ranka singing in battles. |

I think it is but just barely... I think one of MFs problems is trying to gain the attention of to many niche audiences instead of focusing on characters and story. Both hit enough of their marks to be good if you can overlook their flaws.

remember most people were annoyed with Basara cause he was flying and singing in the middle of combat. Ranka was in a battleship and was actually part of the plan.
man just listened to my M7 play list, gotta love that rock and awesome vocals. If they ever do another Macross with a male singer, they're gonna have an impossible task getting compared to Basara. |

In M7 you have 2-3 great battles that lasted several episodes. Each great battle in MF lasted maybe just 2 episodes long at best. They even wasted time with 2 episodes that are "filler" quality. The development between Basara and the Protodevlin's Sivil seems much more involving than Altoh and Sheryl. While Basara was cold to Mylene, there are some tender moments. I rather watch Basara sing to Sivil instead of seeing Princess Altoh trying to make up his mind with anything. Basara can be annoying, he's got conviction, he's determined in what he believes in unlike Altoh. |

Atleast Basara was unpredictable, if Altoh was in M7, he would get annoyed of Basara's singing. I thought Sheryl was kind of dissappointing, she didn't have the charisma Basara had. We saw a little bit in the 1st few episodes but later it went downhill. Atleast with Basara, he's always writing music and singing in M7. |

Most notable things about M7 1.Weak animation 2.Basara!!Basara!!Basara!! 3.The music. 4.The character/plot development(in retrospect). 5.The struggles and battles. Most notable things about MF 1.Great animation. 2.Solid character designs. 3.Rushed story/plot/character development. 4.The loli. 5.The struggles, battles and conspiracy. I think MF is mostly rushed and needs a 2nd season to clean things up and deal with the conspiracy, I forget was Galaxy destroyed, or just battle galaxy? Plenty of stuff for a 2nd season but like most modern media went for rushed development cycles to get at the profit without thinking abotu much else.

Just keep in mind that M7 is memento of 25 years of Macross. Else will solve itself. Maybe...

Ok, I think this is my fourth time trying the series, and I just made it as far as I ever had before. Oddly enough ep 12. I dunno if its the fact that I am getting into Macross more (as opposed to RT, my first anime love) but I am definitely handling it better than I imagined. It's actually kinda fun.
One thing that I LOVE that this series does, that MacF most assuredly did not is the variety of music that's around. Hell 12 eps in and I have heard Bomba, Alice, Sharon Apple, and a few others whose names I can't be arsed to look up. Now I don't like all of them, but it does a great job of making the world seem more alive. I do also like the idea of the band trying to make it big, though the execution on that angle is often flawed. I always wondered, what defines a hit in the Macross universe? How hard is it to make it big? Every other series had 1 or at most 2 major idols at a time, Mac7 shows that there is a variety of popular stuff. Dislikes are still manifold. It's 12 episodes in and there is no reason anyone should think of Basara as anything but a complete fucking lunatic. The guitar flight control is one of the stupidest ideas in the history of ever, and I had forgotten just how much Pedo bait Mylene was used as, (it makes the treatment of Ranka look reserved by comparison.) I still love seeing Max and Milia, though greed bulbous head Exsedol still bugs the shit out of me. Finally, the space battles are nothing short of awful. I hope the series gets better in this aspect because quite honestly the Original series' battles always felt more dynamic and engaging than these do, and I think they used stock footage LESS, which still amazes me. Whoever directed the battles for Macross 7, was not at all at the top of their game. I mean it's Macross, and I saw missles flying straight FORWARD? WTF? Still, I'm onboard, I can deal with the wacky a bit better now than I could before. We'll see where this one goes. Edit: Oh yeah almost forgot, Mikimotos designs rock, as usual, except for Gamlin, who looks like the love child of Quicksilver and Wolverine. |

I just finished this bizarre incarnation of the Macross pedigree, and I can rate it as strictly average.
The Pro: - The music in this series is excellent. Fire Bomber's songs are all catchy and fun. - The characters are pretty well developed. I even became sympathetic towards Basara by the end. I especially liked Gamlin's character development and how he and Basara came to respect each other. Mylene is a total brat, but in a good way. - As pointed out above, the character designs. - Veffidas' voice actress. Shame she only speaks about four times, because she has a gorgeous voice. The Con: - The series has about ten or twelve episodes that could be easily classified as "filler." There are several that simply have no plot or character development, serving no purpose but to pad out the story. As a result, it slows the plot progression greatly. - Also as indicated earlier, the battle animation. They used a ridiculous amount of recycled animation, and whoever storyboarded the battles apparently had very little experience doing so. There were a few cool scenes, like Gamlin busting out his beam cannon and whupping up on the Varauta fighters. But it kind of loses its appeal after the sixth time. They literally used the same animation cells, just changing the background drawings. This is an area where the series really suffered because of its length. - Gigil singing. My skin still crawls at the memory. Ray's singing is a close runner-up. - No replay value. I'm hesitant to watch the movies or OVA's after slogging through M7. I think I've had all I can take of its goofiness. - The VF-19 custom just doesn't have the same spark as the YF-19. Too many rounded surfaces, I think. - Logic problem: Just how many frigates and carriers did the M7 fleet have? Every time the Protodeviln attack they destroy six to ten of them in one shot. Heck, the unaired episode opens with about a dozen such ships being wiped out in a matter of seconds. And yet they never seem to mention anything about how much their fleet would have to be shrinking. Their escort fleet would have to be HUGE to keep the city from being overrun by episode 25. - The world. The series never goes to any length to make City 7 seem special. Most of the time is spent in the back alleys or slums and other generic-looking city streets, so there's never anything about the city that sets it apart from a generic urban location. About the most interesting civilian vessels are the resort ship and the agricultural ship. This is one aspect where Macross Frontier really shined, as it made me WANT to live on the Frontier colony. M7 never made me want to live there. - I know it's the future, but sometimes the series gets a little too fantastic for my tastes. Namely with regards to cars that can travel through space. One thing I'm glad they didn't carry over in MF. I still have the movies and OVAs, but I think I've had all I can take of Kawamori's silliness for a while. I will be humming Submarine Street for a while, though. Great song. |
