Anime about loneliness
At the risk of sounding emo, I'm looking for more anime with loneliness as a theme.
I've seen: Ghost in the Shell: Innocence Monster Garden of Sinners Kino no Tabi Mushishi Welcome to NHK Genshiken Reference titles: Lost in Translation Taxi Driver The Machinist Avalon 2046 Batman movies I'm stretching it on some of those, but I'm looking for a somewhat dark atmosphere like in Innocence. I'm not emo btw, you don't have to recommend me emo titles. Preferrably not loneliness related to love. More like a feeling-out-of-place-at-the-new-job loneliness or however many other types of loneliness there are.

I don't see how xxxHOLiC is emo... (or how Welcome to NHK passes this emo test while SayoZetsu fails, but w/e)
Fruits Basket - the two male leads are lonely Kare Kano - Tsubasa arc Aishiteru ze Baby - young girl latches on to the protagonist in absence of her mother; his love interest is lonely But none of those are very dark... hmm. Kurau Phantom Memory - not too dark, but at least it's sci-fi... about alien lifeforms that take over take over/form human bodies; they are utterly lonely without their "pair," their other half, so to speak. Much of the conflict arises from the forced separation or loss of pairs. |

Haibane Renmei has an almost surreal feel to it, and definitely conveys the idea of being new and alone or in a different world. Midway through it becomes a focus of the show after

Spoiler for another big spoiler:
Voices of a Distant Star is an amazing OVA, that tackles the concept--it's more about distance but loneliness definitely could be considered a theme. It's very short--just a single ova however. Serial Expertiments Lain is an interesting piece, but I think the main character is very, very isolated and while not the focus it certainly exudes from the atmosphere. Higurashi has it a bit in the second season, though it's by no means a prevailing theme or focus. It's also very violent. I can't say more without really spoiling it. It's a bit of a stretch. |
