Watching the raws now.

... Man, this show really lives up to the "Bakemono" part of its name. I'm getting shrills just by watching the scene between Araragi and Hitagi.

I feel like this show is actually the Epic Walls Of Text, done in graphic form.

Well, there were less, I guess...
That moe line actually exist in the original novel. In fact, they did not add anything beyond the original content (well, other than that 0.5 seconds of "ZETSUBOUSHITA!" on-screen text.)

I've heard the staff said in the interview that the first episode has a lot of still frame since they've used 420 cuts or something; the second episode will have more animation (not so sure, still not have any chance to read that interview) so I don't think they've blown up the budget... yet.

Yes and yes. The opening will be different for each chapter. I'm sure this OP will be used for the next episode (which is unfortunate to be used for only ONE episode, since it's so good.)

Well, here are some screenshots from episode 1:

For the visual alone, the episode is worth the watch. Mind you, it wasn't big on animated movement. Just the drawing, CG, and the background art along with very good camera panning what makes the episode visually special.

edit: @Sirn: it remains to be seen how much animated movement this show will see, or whether Shaft will put any effort at all in that aspect of animation. This studio has always been big on the first episode and has toned down on the eye-candy as the series progressed into the episode count. Background art and CG eats up a lot of money too if done right. 5cm, Beyond the Cloud are couple of example.

And the smart disguise for the Epic Walls Of Text.

Seriously, I can see walls lines of text almost every second I advance through this episode. Even to the smallest-places-where-we-would-ignore.

Lol... the dialogue isn't too bad. All these talking heads are shaping the upcoming event and what to expect. I'm sure a few viewers who aren't liking all the talking right now might change their mind if they re-watch the episode with subtitle which I'm going to do as well.

Yeah i didn't understand much in terms of dialogue, which is unusual for me. Still, just like most SHAFTxShinbo shows (and ef), i'll watch it each week raw for the visuals.

Some of the jokes I did not get until I looked it up: like the scene where Hitagi called herself tsundere, but Koyomi replied "no, you're a tsundora". I'm like "what the hell is a tsundora?!".
Here's what I found...

Tsundora: to freeze the atmosphere with a boring joke, or a person who does something like this.

No, I don't mean the dialogue, I'm fine with it though since I have much patience to endure my sooo anticipated first episode. What I mean is the random lines of text that appear at most intervals in this episode. What supplements these is the texts appearing at signboards etc etc and even the "Do Not Cross" tapes have 'em written in detail. Hence why I address 'em as "perfectly hidden Walls Of Text." And TBH, that sent me a bit dizzy and that was complemented with the use of the visual style Bakemonogatari has. Wow, now I'm hypnotized to say it is a good start for this series. Yay!

Looks like this is going to be lots of work for the would-be subbers...

Anyway, anyone wishing for a HD subbed episode? Count me in.

I don't know about that, I think all his SHAFT works are still inferior to Soul Taker/Cossette when it comes to experimenting with direction and visuals.
I was hoping Bakemonogatari would be his return to bit more serious anime like those two, but after reading that novel is more about gags...well, maybe some other time.

Granted SoulTaker made it's own league, but still looking around for experimentation in other studios what do you get:

anime j-pop opera (Macross),
commercialization of trolling (Haruhi Endless Eight),
and testing the limitation of verbal (Umineko) and visual censoring (Queen's Blade)

So even with asterisks, SHAFT is an oasis

Censoring is almost always done by the broadcasting stations, not the studios.

I'll agree in terms of visuals, Soultaker is Shinbo's best work to date, though after this first episode that first position may be in trouble. Anyway, i was talking about all the ShinboxShaft shows in my earlier post.

It actually refers to Tundra (read as Tsundora in Japanese) which match Hitagi's personality.

i think he means she is a cold person, unsocialise

the story is interesting, at least i want to know how and why there are special people like them

the background is a bit too shiny sometimes, other than that the art looks good

i dont understand why in certain scenes they show many writings but only show for 1 second, did not give us time to read them...

yes another series for me to follow

Haven't read the novel, but the 1st episode is very good in my opinion.

This certainly seems too peaceful for a world with vampires. Donno the genre but sure hopes the paces pick up in later episodes, wanna see some actions! Animation style is quite different, kind of give you this mirror image feeling during sunset, makes me wanna sleep.

Only bad part for me was old guy talked way too much philosphy bullshit, which was horrific to interpret.

actually I enjoy its somewhat peaceful atmosphere so far bar the crazy chick moment, its something a little different from the usual doom and gloom that we get from vampire stuff.

This is def got to be one of the more stunningly visual animes of late, very nice indeed.

I heard abit of Zetsubou-Sensei in there somewhere, after he gets poked in the eyes

ahhh 2 very great visual animes this and the great despair that is Zetsubou-Sensei!

lol.. you are right! That's one of the typical Shinbou-signature for a series he works on. Yeah, I also feel sorry for the that gullible typesetter who is volunteering to undertake such monumental task. I kid.. you guys are great. While there are a lot of signs/text already in English, there are tons more for any group that prides themselves to be thorough.

Btw, the episode was full of lol. The exchange of dialogues in several occasion made me lol quite a few times. We also seem to have a true tsundere whose Tsun-side is in display when she staples people on the side of their cheek, or the gumline with a stapler. She also plays with a box cutter and seems to be equally adept at using other precise geometric tools. Gotta love it.

If anyone watched the raw you can see a lot of text used throughout, this only increases the time to make subs for this. If it was just straight dialogue I'm sure subs would've been out by now...
