Right now...
The Mars Volta - Sometimes pretentious and most times unapproachable, but overall an extremely satisfying progressive rock outfit. Especially with the addition of their new drummer Thomas Pridgen, a fucking virtuoso, they just define a supergroup. They have some brilliantly composed songs of amazing complexity. Portugal. The Man - A really fun band that always brings something very different to the table with every record of their's, from hints of electronica to swamp rock, to choral vocals to gospel rock, to progressive. Although their most recent record is a little disappointing to me, they push their limits and every time I see them live they are dramatically tighter as a group. Lightspeed Champion - Also known as solo artist Dev Hynes. He's just a very good songwriter who is easily relate-able. His take on songwriting, a sort of diary-style way of writing, is very inspiring to me, that someone is able to make art without it really being triggered by anything, to have that much imagination. He shines in the same way the Bob Dylan did, the willingness to share a story. Girl Talk - A mashup artist who also goes by Greg Gillis. Just about the most ADD-fueled party music I have listened to. I don't really listen to records of his unless they're playing at parties, but I see him live whenever he's even remotely close. I would go out of my way to see him live. |
