An anime list sorted by highest rated, at Site X. Check out the number of "members", people who have watched the series. I would definately add a fourth or fifth vote on this thread that Aria is an underrepresented masterpiece. Maybe it's because it's a "pure" slice of life which is boring to most western audiences, while partial slice* like Clannad etc gets a lot of coverage.
Spoiler:
I also loved The Cat Returns by Ghibli. While the story was quite linear and predictable, it was a light-hearted adventure and comedy. I was laughing for extended lengths of time and was highly entertained by the whole movie. The main girl also shows more maturity in the end. *Seeing the slice-of-life debates, I'll just call anime which contains significant amounts of slice of life, but that not being the primary driver "partial slice".

I'm not sure if these are truly underrepresented, but my picks would be:
Planetes- excellent drama and emotion. I loved the focus on a futuristic blue-collar profession. The hard-science approach to space was awesome, and the compass and the oxygen tank (those who have seen this know what I am talking about) completely sold this show for me emotionally. Now and Then, Here and There- the art style of this series completely belies the dead serious tone of the story. This series had me riveted to my seat. Orguss 2- it has been so long since I have seen this one; however, I remember the political drama and depiction of warfare being well done. I also liked the male and female leads. I'm not sure how well it would hold up today, but through the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia, it looks pretty nice. |

The unknown anime's
So how many of you like an anime no one has heard of
the one I like is called Welcome to Pia Carrot it was originally based on an eroge game and had 2 series' based on it (3 episodes each) the second had a 6 episode remake that wasn't a "softcore hentei", which gave it much more plot to go off on, even though the originals had a lot of plot (somehow) it also had a movie, which wasn't hentei at all either and was the first movie based on an eroge |

Brigadoon Marin to Melan
By far the most awesome adventure which has EVERYTHING (action, mecha, drama, comedy, yuri, slight lolicon, mystery, phychedelia) in great directing and nobody knows about it. Seriously, that series deserves a place in the top 50s of all times. |

Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo.
Raise your hand if you ever heard of this show. I actually preferred its manga though as its anime censored lots of gore stuffs. Unlike Higurashi and School Days, it did not use violence as major gimmick. The show spans about 140 episodes but it was overshadowed by more popular Detective Conan which still shown in Japan right now. |
