Your Preferred Videogame Genres

So, which videogame genres do you enjoy the most?

As for me, i enjoy versus fighting games and platform games. Among my favorite versus fighting games are the KOF games, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Guilty Gear and Melty Blood. Among my favortie platform games are the Mario platform games and the Donkey Kong Country games.

Other genres i play once in a while are RPG games and racing games

RPG, RTS/strategy. I suck at FPS, although this is strictly speaking multiplayer since AI in single player is pretty predictable (once you learn the spawn points after dying a few times).

Rpg/JRPG. Like Shin Megami Tensei, Digital Devil saga... Tales of series, and so on. The highlight of JRPG in my opinion, is persona series and Tales of series.(The latter being kinda dropped by me because of the Vesperia crap.)

Horror: RE series, step aside! Because Dead Space just owned your arse. I like games with horror-based tendencies (playing on fears, claustrophobia being an example)

Shooter: Gears of Wars wasn't much for me because how reliant it was on online play to get the real fun. Turok being a good shooter game. Another would be Pr---Resident Evil, I mean. Since I more or less consider it just a shooter game now, after playing Dead Space not too long ago. Fallout 3 was a good shooter, too. thanks to that, I can now snipe quite well (It was my character build, actually.)

Sports: Never touched one in my entire life.

Fighting: Soul Calibur being my first, actually. after that, I hyped myself on Street fighter, and later stuff. My most recent being Blazblue. (Quote: "I am the white void, I am the cold steel. With sword in hand I will reap the sins of this world and cleanse them in the fire of destruction. I am Hakumen, the end has come." Unquote )

Racing: Urghh.. just.. URGHH... sooo redundant.... so many left turns and crashes... Look, I have 200+ vision, I am not going to drive in real life, so I don't need to feel depressed about me being able to crash 20 times into the same wall.

I named games and handed out my opinions. Hazardous? Most likely.

Turn based strategy, RPGs (especially anything with Shin Megami Tensei in its name), tactics games, occasional action games. I've acquired a taste for roguelikes recently. I really liked real time tactics games, but the genre never really caught on (Myth: The Fallen Lords). I used to be really in to RTSes, but have kind of gotten tired of them. I played the original Command & Conquer a lot (incidentally, it was just released as freeware officially).

Some VNs - but I'm not sure if I should really count those as games so much as books.

My latest addiction is Armored Core. I heard it mentioned on a Zone of the Enders board and tried an AC game and got hooked quickly.

Strategy RPGs (FF Tactics, Fire Emblem) would be my favorite genre. Shooters come in a close second. Action/Adventures like Zelda and Okami round out the top 3.

JRPGs have really fallen out of favor with me over the last few years, but I'm starting to warm up to western RPGs a lot more these days.

I love fighting games and action games as well, but I really suck at 'em, unfortunately.

Top 3 Genres for meself:

Platformers: What can I say? The gaming industry was built on top of this genre and has been, in my humble opinion, the best genre of all time. I love retro gaming and whenever I think of it, I always come back to this genre. (Ex. Mario Bros, Kirby, Sonic the Hedgehog, Megaman)

Action/Adventure: While this genre was practiclly scarce till games went 3D, it's about the closest modern form of gaming one can get to that retro-style platforming these days. (Ex. Legend of Zelda, Okami, Devil May Cry, No More Heroes)

Racing: Another genre that didn't really get incredibly fun till gaming went 3D, but I love this genre for my multiplayer itch, and the preferred of 2 genres I actually find fun to play with other people. (Mario Kart, Sega All-Stars Racing, F-Zero)

Genres I like but don't play as often:

Action RPG's (Ex. Kingdom Hearts, .Hack//, Tales of)
Shooters, FPS and TPS (Ex. Metroid, Metal Gear, Halo)
Survival Horror (Ex. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Rising)
Fighting (Ex. Soul Calibur, BlazBlue, Super Smash Bros.)
Flight Simulators (Ex. Starfox)
Party Games (Ex. Mario Party, WarioWare Inc.)
Un-realistic Sports Games (Ex. Mario Golf, Sega All-Stars Tennis)
Arcade (Ex. Pac-Man, Frogger)

Genres I downright dislike:

Tactical RPG's (Exception: Pokemon)
Strategy (Exception: Pikmin)
Puzzle (Exception: Tetris)

Hack n Slash / FPS / 3PS / Fighting Sims / Racing

Though I am not fond of movies being made into games I sure would like to see Universal Soldier: Regeneration being made into one . It has a lot of potential IMO

MMO/RPG and RTS definitely.

Real Time Strategy
I don't like build wins, simple as that.
  • Starcraft, because its not about the units its about the player!
  • Tiberium Sun, Red Alert 2 were fun in their own way.
  • C&C4 is excellent (love Kane's Wrath), probably last good C&C game
  • SC2 looking good as well even though its still beta.

MMO
I've played quite a few but just going to list the more memorable ones. Generally I like interesting graphics, nice skills and nice gameplay. In order of fun factor.
  • Guild Wars (co-op)
  • Soul of Ultimate Natison
  • LaTale (side-scrolling)
  • Domo (team grinding fun)
  • Requiem: BloodMare
  • WoW (didn't play much but its okey in its own way)

RPG
Die hard diablo fan.
  • Diablo I
  • Diablo II
    etc =P

Also like games like Prince of Persia but I don't really put those into genres.

Like most members here it seems, my favorite genre is RPG's, followed by action/adventure, and lastly fighting. My favorite RPG's (in this order) are: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3, Final Fantasy X, and Kingdom Hearts.

Hands down it's RPG. -Final Fantasy-
-Still, I love games that have some kind of strategy or require some thinking.
(I usually fail at fast paced games)
