Mini-sans-spoilers-review:
Yes, it's pretty and looks very impressive in multiple places. No, it's just disappearance. Nothing really more or less. I set my expectations too high. Fortunately, the movie will drag anyone who does that down to reality very quickly. |

There's another campaign, announced from the website, that begins next weekend.
All customers who ask for the present will get a set of two postcards, one is a special illustration from Kyoto Animation and the second is one of four possible scenes from the movie. All theatres that are currently showing the movie will be participating in this campaign. Source: Official homepage

And they work. I'd estimate a good 25% of the people who were at the morning showing last week were repeaters. |

Edit: Here is a picture of the image produced by Kyoto Animation for their special postcard: 2nd Edit:Not really deserving a double-post bump, but one more theatre has announced start dates. In the Toyama prefecture, Toyama Theatre Daitokai will begin their showings on 4/10. This is one of the second run theatres.

Now I shall apologize for a double-post since the box office earnings were finally published for last weekend.
The Haruhi movie came in 15th place on Box Office Mojo's rankings, down two spots. It earned $155,599 USD (14,083,265 yen) last weekend (down 34.4%) and has earned $7,122,204 USD (644,630,684 yen) in the 7 weeks it's been out. Right now we're still at 28 theatres, but one is added this weekend and another in two weekends as I posted above. Source: Box Office Mojo

Well, yeah -- this is not by any stretch of the imagination a mainstream movie or a mainstream movie release, nor does it have anything near a mainstream movie budget. It's only playing in around 30 theatres, where as more major productions can play in hundreds of Japanese theatres (and when you're talking about the major blockbusters, thousands of theatres worldwide). Anime aimed at young adults is an extremely niche market in Japan; it's not ever going to compete with mainstream stuff.
