looking for some advice on conversationwith japanese
So I'm tutoring Japanese Foreign Exchange Students in casual conversation. They've been in america for 1-3 months. Anyways, I'm looking for topics to talk about or rather ideas. The goal is to make them talk so they can start to think in English. If they are humorous ideas, it would have to be something they would understand. It would be particular helpful if it has to do with the japanese culture.. you know, topics that stimulate conversation.Anyone have any ideas?
Conversation topics discussed so far... their lives casual stuff: age, family etc General observations about differences in about the holidays holidays Last edited by luckme10; 2004-10-05 at 00:14. |

I like to travel so talking about where other people had gone on vacation - and the better restaurants, sights, and such - was always a plus on this end. Since they're exchange students, they might be interested in seeing the sights while they are in the country. Some good but relatively unknown places would be good, IMHO.

Also, try to get them to understand how life in America is. Like what people do in their daily lives and such. Popular "after school/work" hang out spots, ect. I'd say anime, but that would probably scare em off. |

On that note ... I'm going to get serious You know ... I'm actually going to recommend staying away from a conversation revolving around Japanese culture. If I went to Japan as an exchange student I would want to know about their culture and their hobbies. It would bore me if I had to sit there and go through a conversation about San Francisco that i have with my friends anyway. But if you must ... try something hip happenin' like Jrock. Get as much Gackt and Dir en Grey as possible before the next meeting. Listen to it. Pretend you like it. |

what about assignments? Things i can give them to heighten their communication skills. I was thinking about making a mock aim conversation and using tons of commonly "slured words"
kind of like how katakana was formed... nekkutai necktie nekulasu necklace why is one neck have a stopper in between the ne and ku... |
