Pa...Pancake faces?
Ume-sensei's widefaces are awesome and adorable. I guess it's something of an acquired taste. As for whether they fit the mood of the show... I think people are too quick to dismiss this anime as a dark/fucked up show simply because Urobuchi is involved in it. It's obviously not all going to be cats and rainbows, but I don't think it'll be quite as bad as people assume. Sure, Urobuchi has wrote some very messed up stuff before, but that doesn't mean he's unable to write something different and a little more light-hearted.

Personally speaking, I like pancakes. And I like Umi Aoki's designs, I certainly like the designs in the anime, but I think that when the magical world visuals are present, it creates a really strong contrast that the design of the characters doesn't really work with it. I mean yes, this could be just a matter of getting used to it long enough, but going from the first episode it didn't really fit with the surreal almost dystopian world.
Though personally, the mismatch between the two didn't dent my enjoyment one bit, considering everything else was great. So really, it's a minor complaint on my part. About the possibility of this going the grimdark/fucked up road, well, Urobuchi's reputation didn't help with it, but neither did the visuals or the demonic monsters >_> I still do think this will take a dark turn, if only due to what Homura told Madoka (and her general mannerism before that speech, especially the biting of the lips)

Wideface is moe~ And pancakes are delicious, though inferior to rofls.
All this speculation caught me off-guard. Back from the future Higurashi end of the world special? I just interpreted the opening as a simple prophetic dream, and Homura knowing all about Yuno as just good intel (since she's a professional magical girl or whatever). Glad to see I'm far from the only one who thought "Hey! It's the Pringles guy!" during the acid trip. A school with transparent walls is kinda... awkward. Odd design choice there. Yuno has a damn big bathroom, too. Nori pulling a fire extinguisher on Homura was great. Kudos to her! Suck it, Gilgamesh. You do not have enough swords. The whole "one wish for the contract" reminded me of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer. I hope Yuno's wish doesn't turn out as lame as some of those wishes did. And of course, wishing for the end of the world to go away is against the rules. (I'll switch to the right names next time... probably. )

Guess I'm a little to used to Hidamari Sketch's style of animation and atomsphere for these types of character designs. Btw for such effort to go into this so far they made a pretty big error at the part when after Mami transforms, Madoka isn't holding Kyuube.

About the designs, Hidamari had a more solid animation, the eyes in Madoka's series are changing depending on how close is the "camera". |

A question of some interest: what is so bad about becoming a magical girl that Kyubey offers an unlimited wish as an incentive? Usually folks don't get that sort of wish without offering to sell their soul, and there are generally all sorts of bad side-effects as well. Many girls would wish to become a magical girl, but he's offering them that for free, and talking as if a wish for anything is somehow necessary to "repay" them for agreeing to the contract. That doesn't bode well. Of course, folks have already been predicting trouble. Heck, Homura started it.

"sell your souls to me, and then you can wear cool dresses"
Like i'd said before, i'm willing to treat the contrast in style as intended way to enhance the "something is off" feeling that I'd been having the whole time watching this episode.

if we combine both information we get much deeper infomation: - so main theme is "believe" how do you believe? are believing in yourself? - seem there is a war or some conflict before that involved many mahou shoujo. homura was one of the survivor and prevent madoka to join the war.

I am not invested in the designs or their authoress, I did not like the designs in the anime, but I think the contrast really makes them work. Sometimes you want to establish a disconnect between characters and the world around them and the 1st episode of Madoka seems to fit the bill. So moar pancake faces I say! MOAR!! |

at the moment it's still debatable as to how the story will progress.
I would love to see a typical Urobuchi storyline, however they can still troll us by making this still fluffy. (didn't read the interview because of the warning)
