Sherlock (2010 BBC/PBS series)
Hi.
This outstanding series just premiered on PBS last weekend; though the BBC showed it earlier this year. If you live in the US and haven't already seen this example of how to take on a challenge like re-imagining Holmes and Watson for the 21st century and do it right, the PBS Masterpiece website will be streaming the episodes online; at least until people start buying the DVDs and/or Blurays, I guess. (Sadly, despite WNED technically covering southern Ontario, the video doesn't play here in Canada...) So, anyone else get a look at it; and if so, any thoughts?

Oh yes, I've seen this preview on television quite a few times. I'm not sure about it entirely because I haven't actually watched an episode, I just find it doesn't appeal to me much because I liked the '09 Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr.. I suppose I'll have to watch it sometime and find out.

Hmm, looks good, definitely up my ally...
Then you should watch Idris Elba in "Luther" aswell...That show is gritty with style and intensity...Also not too shabby in the intellect department as the main character is somewhat of detective genius...

I heard good things about this show since it's written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
Yes, the writers of the new Doctor Who are behind Sherlock. Expect good drama and unintentional HoYay in this show. LOL

The series was okay, quite enjoyable in fact.I think that threatens as much as it promises . To me it did feel too much like a bunch of Steven Moffat's Dr. Who episodes, just without the Doctor. Not that I'd object to that if it was Dr. Who, it just felt too similar, and not so much something really new. The pacing and the directorial style only added to this. The last episode felt particularly clumsy probably because

It had aired before on the bbc, it was very good. Still have the episode and haven't watched them yet.
But no more episodes were made, they were specials after all not meant to be a steady weekly series if you ask me However somewhere in the future we will see more 90 min specials of it http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-10925753 ^old article is old |

It really just depends on the person. When I read the books, Rathbone was the closest to how I pictured Holmes.

I'm with NightWish in my regard for Brett's performance. I found Rathbone too hammy, though his performance fit well with Nigel Bruce's . Brett seemed to keep himself in check enough to make his Holmes believably human. Edward Hardwicke's Watson was equally impressive.
I avoided Downey's movie because the trailers made it seem overly silly and uncharacteristically violent. I might give this new series a try, though.
