How about H2O? You could learn how terrible it is to be "socially dead".
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien teaches you how to "let go" of the past. Saikano for shits that war brings. Someone mentioned Niea_7, I'm adding Haibane Renmei Heck, go with Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei while you're at it.

Binbou Shimai Monogatari and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. The latter is quite relevant to what's happening at the moment, so you might find it interesting.
Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two - you'll either love or hate. Personally I think it's one of the best shows that deals with love/loss and it might just be the kind of bittersweet show that makes your fancy. |

I will second this, however not for your reason. To the OP, I would not recommend this anime because it will probably bore you to death if you are not into the "hardcore" romance stuff/you hate asian dramas.

I'll add House of Five Leaves to the list. Life is difficult when you're an unemployed ronin as the samurai period comes to an end.
Usagi Drop provides some good insights into the difficulties of being a single parent.
