Shion is gonna surprise us, I'm sure of it. As for Emma, is quite ironic that the dream of the fourth of the brothers was to become a white mage and heal wounds. Precisely the tittle that most fits Emma, it's natural for a mother to constantly worry about her husband and children safety

Emma refills Shion's magic? AND he just re-uses the star sword? I'm getting huge "Strongest Move" vibes from that sword now and I don't like it. More variety please? If he has to undergo some sort of "training arc" because he's too weak then the title of Arch Mage really doesn't amount to much.

Yes, I understand that his repertoire might include a variety of non-combat spells too, but I've always thought an Arch Mage was quite knowledgeable. He should know more than 2 for combat, no?

Also, Magico has taken a huge dive in the rankings over the past couple of weeks.

edit: Though this chapter may feel rushed because of that.

I feel pretty much the same way. But thinking about it, maybe it's for something rather small - Shion was overhyped. If he'd just been "the most infamous criminal", rather than "one of only three archmages", I wouldn't have been nearly as disappointed in his performance.

Well he's one of the three archmages of the west or east I forget which, but it implies that the other quadrants also have top mages. Also we've been told that broom magic is quite strong so maybe it is really his only attack magic and the rest of his magic is all to do with the magico rituals.

Being a top mage doesn't equal to having lots of deadly combat magic abilities, just saying. If you are disappointed is just your own problem, for putting your expectations too high.

No, it doesn't. Though if we put it into perspective, let's take a look at an MMO. Even the highest level white-mage type has a wide range of abilities, and surely a few attack options as well. Now here, it's stated Shion is a black-mage type...incorporating every type of magic which is rare all on its own. Add to that he's an "Arch Mage" which puts him at being one of the best.

Being a top class mage of all studies should mean he should have access to a few more spells. Though Broom magic has many uses, it's still only "1 skill" as a whole, only one ritual was needed to attain it. Like it was said earlier, maybe the fault isn't in Shion, but the fact it was pointed out he was an Arch Mage. Also, please consider this before brushing it off as "our own problem". The author wanted us to know Shion is a powerful mage. To me, powerful means beating 3 guys with a vast array of skills this early on in the story.

Would it ruin it? Possibly, but look at ID. I won't go too much into it but the story thrives on his power.

Well... keep in mind that for a weekly shounen, we're still pretty early in. It hasn't even been running for quite half a year, so I won't be surprised if more tricks are pulled out much later in the series. After all, you've got to have more surprises in store without going asspull level, like I've seen more than one JUMP series do

Plus, as powerful as these three were, I highly suspect that they were still cannon fodder compared to later enemies

Indeed. Not only that, but his reputation as a criminal stems from the fact he routinely defeats the rich and powerful.

The first of them, as far as we know about anyway, being Zodia.

He may have been exhausted, but if Shion had that much trouble taking down Gaspar, I don't know how he stands any kind of a chance against Zodia whose build-up has him becoming ridiculously powerful.

I certainly Shion picks up on some new spells and perhaps even some training in the time he's got left.
