Then how do you explain the device? As I understood it, he was dreaming the entire thing but it was of a real event. He was also pretty hellbent on going though with his "mission", for it to have been merely a dream.

I suppose the part where the enemy stairs at him could have been just a retcon of reality though.

Alright really quickly. The dream was also something that happened in the past and his mother really did give him the AGE device 7 years ago before dying. It's kind of like his recurring PTSD in relation to the day his mother died and introduces that aspect of his character and why he's so paranoid about the UE. You miss that and you kind of miss the core drive behind his character arc in this episode, which would be a real shame.

I would have though that this was something that would be really damn obvious, especially since it's before the credits where you'd expect the episode establisher/hook to be, but I guess not.

In any case this does raise a good point, how did he escape that scenario and why? I have little doubt that'll be elaborated on moving forward and that we'll come back to that Day The Angel Fell event more than a few times.

The fact that they didn't show it leads me to believe there's a good reason...cause it'd probably spoil the show.

That older commander guy, I think his name is Bruzar, is said to have taken Flit in as a father figure. He could of been leading a counter attack and saved Flit at the right time.

We were talking about how it was just a DREAM, or at least the robot lock-on part was.

Meaning THAT wasn't real. He didn't survive the UE because that part of the dream never actually happened.

(why must you make it so hard to explain)

What makes you so sure that part with the Gafran looking at Flit isn't real? There is nothing that suggests it wasn't real.

God dammit people learn to read one post above your own already. It's not me but SoldierOfDarkness who suggested it. And the reasoning is simple:
  • he would be DEAD if it was
  • it conveniently coincides with him waking up and the scene in general
  • there was no aftershock from that; so it probably didn't happen
And I'm not "sure" Dark's theory is just more plausible at this point.

Well to be fair it could be the trauma regarding the UE playing tricks in his head and making the UE even more intimidating inside his own mind, but until we actually find out the true history of what happened during that arc that's still just pure speculation. It does make one wonder what was really supposed to have happened then and why though.

Not bad for a first episode. Wayyy better than I thought it would be. I might actually enjoy this series. Also I LOVE the UE, they are so evil and menacing. I wish 00 had enemies like that.

What about the theory of someone distracting the Gafran long enough for Flit to escape? It isn't that far of a stretch is it?

Since it's presented as a dream, and not a regular memory/flashback, it doesn't matter how Flit survive his first encounter with the UE. It could just be a fictional part of the dream or it could be a real memory that may or may not be explained later in the series.

Actually, Ovan != Angel. The Day the Angel Fell happened the year Flit was born.

Obviously 0 Gundam shows up from out of nowhere and shoots that guy up, lol

I find it odd that like all (or rather most) Gundam series, we weren't treated to an "opening narration" establishing things... Wonder if that'll happen in episode two or not...

So why do people fight, anyway?
Perhaps the meaning of existence lies within their will to fight.
People feel a sense of accomplishment through battle.
And it’s also a fact that the ones actually fighting are never perceived as being tainted.

That's likely because all we know is that some unknown group has been attacking different places, seemingly at random, for the last 14 years. With many of the previous series, a conflict between two known groups are already established before the first episode. So the narration simply brings the viewer up to speed on where the series is starting.

With AGE, the dream sequence and the news that Flit watched in the morning accomplished pretty much the same thing that an opening narration for previous series would.

Regarding Flit surviving, I reckon 0 Gundam came just in time to shoot a pink beam and made Flit into a Gundam fanboy who obsesses on it and want to build it........

Okay, just kidding but I reckon the scene would likely be extended later to show how he survived.

I won't be surprised if it came up in the next episode, wasn't there one in the trailer where we were shown about a peace treaty being signed in the past and all. They may have wanted to amp the focus on Flit first by showing his mother dying as the starting scene.
