I've been watching all three. I cannot say much about the script, but I think all of them are ok. GG seems to be the most "localized" to me. And despite being known for speed-subbing, I found Commie putting the most effort in translate and typeset the text on screen.

Just a note to myself:
We CAN talk about subs here, right?

---------

Anyway, I still prefer Mazui subs over gg's....or Commie's... (I've had bad experiences with them, especially with the gruesome 500+ MB subs and/or insanely liberal GC / KWZDk translations/encoding....)

The series is not currently licensed. As far as I understand the rules, that means we can discuss subs here. Of course, if anyone licenses it all these posts will vanish.

Sometimes I wonder why Oreki just doesn't demand Chitanda, "If you want me to answer your question, then you should go out with me." She keeps forcing her questions on him, and even though he usually does not want to, he always gives in to her "I'm curious". It's like he is infatuated with it and her looks.

In that regards, it will either 1) cause her to stop asking him, or 2) will give him a reason to help where it does not seem so one sided anymore.

My impression is that Oreki is not particularly interested in romance.

In fact, it's possible that Oreki's typical lethargy might reflect a lack of sex drive or libido. Chitanda arouses him, but I honestly get the impression that it's more intellectual than physical. Basically, she's become a real curiosity to him; something that he can take an interest in, in a general way.

That being said, it probably will lead to a romance of sorts (I do get the sense that Oreki is slowly but surely getting attached to Chitanda and may soon find her to be an irreplaceable part of his life), but it'll be a slow-burning romance that's rooted in practical friendship and shared interests (and even just the simple "go along with the flow") more than in passionate desire, imo.

That's about the worst way for him to ask her out. You should never set conditions.

I agree with Triple_R. I don't think Oreki is attracted to Chitanda romantically, he's simply as curious about her as she is about pretty much everything. Well, there are dem eyes, but that's about it.

Oreki is most likely not interested in a romantic relationship at the moment, as it would be too tiresome to keep one up for somebody like him. For now, it's out of the question, but I'm sure he'll be ready by the end of the series. He wants to change and he'll succeed with Chitanda's help. She actually provides good "training" for him. Entertaining her (it's really what he does) will slowly build up his stamina and his motivation (even though he denies it, it's obvious he's having fun solving mysteries for her).

Now that I think about it, it will probably be Chitando who will indirectly confess to him by asking him "why she feels a tightness in her chest" when she's around him. I can definitely imagine her being clueless about love.

I also don't see Oreki really into romance right now, either. Also, the way I stated it was right to the point and unromantic. Of course it would be better for him to ask her out in a direct, but more passionate way. I agree with both Triple_R and Kanon that both do not see any romantic realizations yet.

It is just that it seems so obvious at this point where everything will lead to. They have an attraction to each other that they either do not realize or refuse to accept.

As for what Triple_R stated about his sex drive, Chitanda is about the only person to drive him to do anything at all. She is heads and shoulders above everyone else already. If anyone is going to spark passion in him, it will be Chitanda. His best friend can't even get him to move if he did not want to.

However, the type of interaction and requests that Oreki and Chitanda have are usual signs that lead to romantic endeavors. As an unmotivated person like Oreki, you would not move for anyone unless you have interest in them. As for Chitanda, she has become attached to the point where it is almost a need for Oreki to be around to help her and for her to rely on him.

I get why this is frustrating. The slowly-building romance between Oreki and Chitanda is even slower than the one that Kyon and Haruhi have in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. At least over there...

Spoiler for Major Haruhi Suzumiya spoilers:

But all I can say here is that this is really not your conventional anime romance, or even close to it. It's about two teenagers who first become "just friends" - Very close, but very platonic, friends - And who will almost certainly shift into romance once it clicks for both of them how irreplaceable they now find each other.

But until that "clicks", neither will be fully cognizant or accepting of what exactly is going on between them.

In a way, I kinda like this different approach to romance-building, as I think it'll make the payoff even better once it arrives. But it also means that the show might be a disappointing for people who like nice, clear-cut romance in their SoL shows.

I agree with all of this. Well said.

Since some of you suggested this show in the KyoAni thread, I watch up to episode 6 and WTF?!?!?

Almost all backgrounds are static blurred photographs. Eru puppy-eyed curiosity closeups are repeating every episode. There are only animating the characters walking or talking... last episode also stretching (i.e. 1-2 key frames), but the worst are their "artistic" animations that not only add absolutely nothing, but take up half the screentime... On the other hand the OP/ED animation is superb

As for the content, if ZEXCS takes the most interesting material and turns it into the crappiest anime, KyoAni animates some of the most boring, pointless, and lame material, but it looks so cute

Nonetheless, it fun to watch... especially the novel discovery episode... everything was presented so dramatically, the BGM could be used in any J-Horror, and everyone overreacted... that I was expecting a hidden corpse or some bio-weapon development to be taking place in that lab, instead of more anti-smoking hysteria

As for the last episode, Eru got "angry" and Houtaro told her why... only it took 20 minutes instead of 3-second sentence but Eru still looked really cute

So you would prefer the same information given no depth and buildup, and without an artistic style? Then we can all just go watch a different genre entirely, y'know.

Hyouka is set to run a total of 21 episodes, so they actually need longer scenes to establish and develop characters and their relationships with one another. We could sum everything up into 12 episodes and get to the same point, but in a genre as entrancing as "mystery", it's important to never move too quickly.

Just watched all six episodes today and I actually like the series despite all the negative feedback. But if it weren't for the characters and their interaction with each other + the possible shipping of Houtarou and Chitanda, I would've dropped the series by now. Sometimes I couldn't help but be more interested in the random convos between the characters than the actual mysteries themselves. The uncle's mystery was pretty good though. Hope the show tells us what happened to him in India.

Also Houtarou's character development from being a lazy bum to less of a lazy bum interests me. WATASHI KI NI NARIMASU! I like how he's conflicted about whether he wants a rose colored life or a gray one. I thought he wouldn't have cared because of that personality of his but now he's not sure anymore.

A bit true, although his "being lazy" is just simply attributed to not having interest. Now, he thinks it's bit better to be conservative at energy-spending (taken from his latest call to her sis) ... all because of Chitanda Eru.

heheh, hot spring episode.

I think it's safe to say that Houtarou is definitely romantically interested in Chitanda - just because he's lazy doesn't mean he has no libido :P So pretty much what everyone said above has been proven wrong.

Does Chitanda know how Oreki feels about her and vice versa? Or are they both oblivious to each other's feelings?

They both have some feelings for the other, but don't really seem to act upon it yet. Oreki's lethargic nature isn't helping much either.

I'm tempted to say she is oblivious to it, but it's actually pretty hard to tell what's going on in her mind. She's often said her done stuff that surprised me, like for example being disappointed the baths weren't mixed in the most recent episode.
