Or a giant Yukari adventure as she tours the larger Armor collections around the world.

While everyone else is at the beaches of Santa Cruz (California) Yukari goes up to the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation

(They'd have to go to Monterey Bay as there is no way they could get that ship under the Golden Gate Bridge.)

Actually, this would depend on whether Panzerfahren is a martial art, or a sport.

Now, if it's a martial art, then you're correct, it would not be translated - should not be translated. Hence the various sportified martial arts available in Malaysian schools don't have their names translated - Karate is Karate, Tae Kwon Do is Tae Kwon Do, etc.

On the other hand, if tanking is a sport, then yes, the name would be translated. Soccer/football, bola sepak; Swimming, renang; Long jump, lompat panjang; basketball, bola keranjang. Just a few local examples from my end.

Given that it's being referred to as Panzerfahren, tanking seems less of a sport and more of a martial art.

I've heard it called "tankwondo", "Panzerkraft", "senshado" and "Panzerfahren" in different places. For me, "Panzerfahren" wins out on the virtue of sounding the coolest, but can we really credit the subbers for propagating it?

Why not? Not only does it sound pretty good to the un-initiated ear, it is really no dumber than the other candidates.

Tankwondo is not only cheesy, but is a mishmash of English and Korean plus actually reads out as "Way of the Tank Fist" - this clearly is not on.

Panzerkraft sounds like making tanks rather than using them.

Senshado is a transliteration.

Tankery is ... practical and safe but plain.

Commie's subs are not always of the best quality, but they do make them fast, it is in a sense nice to learn a little German on the way, and hey, they were chosen. We should be good sports and acknowledge their contribution.

IMO, the dividing line between translation and transliteration is the difficulty of finding a reasonably suitable alternative in your own language.

With martial arts, the problem is that they are often in some ways very similar. Karate - a martial art using punches and kicks. Tae Kwon Do - same. Judo and Akido both rely on force-redirection. OK, actually the details are different but it is hard to find easy mapping that distinguishes them. So transliteration is common.

For Panzerfahren, an in-universe explanation may that the term through long use expanded beyond its component parts and grew to be sufficiently more that its full essence is treated as untranslatable. It may also hint at Germany's dominance in the sport/art.

Well, I'm sticking with "Senshado" since that is what the girls actually said out loud in the show.

And that, of course, is the most important part. Insisting on using yet another term, which in and of itself also has no real meaning, when the girls clearly say something different, just seems stupid.

Let's consider the cultural connotations. Tankery would have had no specific meaning. Tankwondo wasn't a candidate to begin with.

Ignoring the Rule of Cool and As Long as It Sounds Foreign (which as we all know are the real reason for the selection), from an in-universe perspective, if they actually use Senshado in English, it implies possibilities like:
  1. Japan runs its own form of (for lack of a better word) Tankery, which is slightly different from the rest of the world (comparable to the difference between Kyudo and Archery).
  2. Japan dominates Tankery, period, so everyone, even the great United States of America, follows the Japanese.
The latter possibility seems unlikely.

While if Panzerfahren is the English term, it suggests possibilities such as:
  1. Germany is dominant in Tankery. Which is at least more plausible than Japan.
[variant]Germany played a substantive role in the development of mock tank combat in its modern, high school form. For example, perhaps if they invented the "carbon" and started using it for mock tank combat before everyone else, that might give them the kind of acclaim to make their own word the English norm.
  2. There are a few specific variants of Tankery, but Japan to a great extent follows German Panzerfahren practices and thus use their terms at least for English (but apparently not enough to just call the sport パンサーファレン)
  3. The term was brought in during the time of WWII when English was despised as the "enemy's language", and the term stuck so well even after the war it is Panzerfahren to the Japanese and the Allied re-education politely ignored it.

The word could also come from the country that invented it even if they're not dominant anymore. But the extra materials point to Europe anyway.

So the following image (I guess snipped from a magazine) has info on the Anzio OVA and the Movie:

The movie will be around 80 minutes long

No people will die suddenly

There won't be any treachery or sordid events

There won't be any strange events that will give the fans a feeling of 'we were betrayed'

Friendship and passion will be a theme again

There will be an 'Ankou festival' again this November in Oarai. Please come and see again

The chamber of commerce and trade is planning to do a 'Japanese Senshado federation mock test' quiz that can be done wile walking across town starting mid June (I guess it will be something similar like the stamp hunt that went on in Oarai during spring)
I have a feeling we'll be seeing the Little Army crew in the movie, possibly Emi.

Yes, normally, but here history takes a hand. Tankery pretty much started just after WWI, and remember Germany lost and had to sign the Treaty of Versailles?

Somehow I don't think they'll be allowed to keep or make tanks "for girls", so if anything Germany would actually have been something of a late comer to the sport and that's why this variant was not a candidate in my post.

It is actually pretty hard to make a stronger team than KMM in terms of equipment. German equipment is, for the tactical work they are doing, as good as they come in WWII. An all-Maus team would be a bad joke.

If they are Russian they can play with the idea of a force made of Su-100s, IS-2s and IS-3s, but even that would not be drastically stronger.

Maybe they'll just be smarter (that would be easy)

That's not news. That's not even information considering the show's nature

I agree. It'll be predictable, safe and un-revolutionary, but ultimately Girls und Panzer is actually a pretty stereotypical show that wins on its execution.

Well this makes me feel much better!

I'm guessing:

1) New tank upgrades!!! Let's get Miho and our stars into a Panther pretty pretty please? It's only the logical evolution since they've shown themselves to be adept gunners and excellent drivers, plus that'll give them the kind of firepower they'll need against a team that's tougher than Black Forest. Other team upgrades? King Tiger for the motor team? Or maybe another prototype German tank (but honestly I'd expect that of the enemy team)? The Rabbit team girls deserve at least a Sherman from Saunders...

Maybe that's part of the story, the Ooari girls can't really afford any new tanks despite being picked to go international, so all the other schools pitch in with both crews and tanks to build an all star team! A Sherman for the Rabbit team, along with a Firefly crewed by Saunders girls. A Matilda for the Duck team, along with a Churchill crewed by the St Gloria girls. A KV-2 for the Mallard team along with an IS-2 and our favorite Pravda duo.

Still that's not enough to handle the fearsome late war prototype tanks of the opposing team... All hope still seems lost until Black Forest shows up to contribue a Panther (Anglerfish), King Tiger (Lion), Jagdpanzer IV (Hippo) and JagdPanther (Turtle) along with onee-san in her Tiger!

2) International rules and teams! Capture the flag instead of flag tanks? Point based teams? Infantry and Artillery support? I hope it's something more tactical and balanced than what the Japanese teams play - just because every body looking to make a game tie in has got to be chaffing under the ridiculous imbalances between school teams that the Japanese league rules permit.

3) Childhood friends and flashbacks! Maybe Little Army characters (maybe not, since they've disregarded the Anzio manga fight) but a similar premise seems essential for themes of 'friendship and passion'.

Getting psyched!

Yes, they're making an OVA dedicated to the Anzio battle. So look forward to more Acciuga Anchovy.

Awesome That was my main gripe earlier in the series, and of all my years of asking for something to be animated, this has to be the best news yet. ANCHOVY!
