Plus there have been worse films that have had sequels made. Lots of them show up on the SyFy channel on Saturdays (the horror of it all).

Those films don't cost 200 mil to make though.

There's a difference though with this movie.

With almost zero marketing and word of mouth the movie made up to 92 million in the states but hit the international box office as well as breaking records in China.

So that at the very least indicates there's potential in it (IE. Anime, comic books, toys, etc) and with China now on board with Legendary they could make a sequel and lower the costs as well as take more money in since it'd be exempt from the 25% return.

But they don't earn 300 mil+ neither....

Honestly, my only problem with Pacific Rim is: it is too short. That's why sequel and preferably a much longer one certainly is welcomed. And it seems sequel tends to earn more also, so finger-cross for a solid franchise....

There is this site that say:
"Sci-fi blockbuster "Pacific Rim" topped China's box office charts in the week ending Aug. 4, grossing 290.5 million yuan (47.46 million U.S. dollars)."

So probably have to wait for this week to see whether it's going strong or sharp drop

Del Toro on TV
Worshipping the 1/1 Gundam looool

Also, apparently he got the inspiration of Cherno Alpha from Zaku.
(and Coyote Tango from Gun Cannon of course)

Man, he's like a kid at a candy store.

Totally can't blame him for being so thrilled at seeing that Gundam . Seems like he had quite a lot of fun on that trip.

I find it hard to believe that an executive would have greenlighted a completely new project that is original, no big names, and no big name director.

If James cameron or whedon were behind this project sure but they aren't.
This is because box office are not dollar for dollar. For example, you would need a revenue share with the theater (It is usually high at 98% remit to studio on opening weekend, and decrease subsequent weeks), and oversea revenue agreements (usually only 1/4 to 1/3 of actual intake.)

So the 300 million you see would be a fraction of what is going to the studio---that is why opening day in the U.S matter a lot and oversea significantly less...this is not pundits looking down on oversea people, this is a realistic assessment on what is actually gonna get paid.

I know this is because when I was in getting my masters in accounting my roomate was doing an research project on movie theater revenues for his MBA, and I read part of it one day when he was out.

Bladehead Concept Art

This started as a Bladehead concept, but I think it might actually have been used for Hardship in the opening montage. Not sure. I hope someone with sharp eyes can say whether or not that makes sense. (It’s the green night vision part.)

So 11 live Kaiju types showed up in the film.

1. Trespasser

2. Karloff

3. Bladehead/Axehead (Hardship)

4. Knifehead

5. Mutavore

6. Onibaba

7. Otachi

8. Leatherback

9. Scunner

10. Raiju

11. Slattern.

The ratings got up to 4.11 /5 in the yahoo movies site, people liked it. The big problem is the Box Office.

Box Office forecast

1 (1) The Wind Rises (Toho) ¥480 million ($5.0 million) Week 4
2 (-) World War Z (Toho-Towa) ¥400 million ($4.2 million) DEBUT!
3 (3) Monsters University (Disney) ¥320 million ($3.3 million) Week 6
4 (2) The After-Dinner Mysteries (Toho) ¥290 million ($3.0 million) Week 2
5 (-) Pacific Rim (Warner Bros.) ¥280 million ($2.9 million) DEBUT!
6 (-) A Boy Called H (Toho) ¥250 million ($2.6 million) DEBUT!
7 (4) The Lone Ranger (Disney) ¥225 million ($2.4 million) Week 2
8 (5) Kamen Rider Wizard in Magic Land (Toei) ¥150 million ($1.6 million) Week 2
9 (6) Pokemon Best Wishes: ExtremeSpeed Genesect - Mewtwo Awakens (Toho) ¥120 million ($1.3 million) Week 5
10 (7) Emperor (Shochiku) ¥80 million ($830,000) Week 3

Good WOM is the key here.

I will never forget the phrase, "Fat Otaku Heaven."

Though, I'm surprised Kamen Rider and Pokemon still doing so well.

Anyone who says, "I know this because I'm an expert at this" is no such expert. Especially when they "claim a friend"

If your friend truly studied this he would also have mentioned to you that nearly 70% of Hollywood's revenue now comes from Overseas. You cannot deny that so I call BS on your friend's part.

Even a child could see that Hollywood's been gearing up to overseas markets like Russia and China and they are willing to move Heaven and Earth to make sure the movie gets in there. You don't need to be an expert in that. If it's truly a tiny fraction then they wouldn't even be bothering in the first place.

I'll let you in on a secret, an accountant's true job is to fudge numbers to either make a company look profitable, neutral to avoid high taxes, or negative to get assistance. Since you're pulling the "I know" I'll throw it back at you and say that I've done some accounting and have a general idea of what they do. It's all about working the numbers. There are limits of course but with Pacific Rim it's not exactly doing horrible. Dredd 2013 now THAT was horrible in it's performance.

I'll let you in on another secret, Hollywood is run by business people and they aren't idiots. They look towards the future and they know that China and other countries are expanding and cannot be ignored. America is no longer the great awesome nation they have to work with. There are other markets to tap into. If you're an accountant you should know the basics that you should never put all of your eggs I one basket and should diversify.

This is why I do not know why it's so hard to understand this yet people like yourself still cling onto America as it's the only one that matters. Guess what? America isn't as important as it used to be.

And before you freak out the reason I'm saying this is because I do like to see an original IP movie with no-name actors, international cast, do very well to prove to Hollywood that you don't need to rely on reboots, remakes, 10 sequels of the same thing, big name directors, American patriotism, and adaptations of comics all the time. I mean we seriously need new stuff and not just the next Captain America 2/3/4/4,etc.

I'm not sure you should be trusting the word of a kid on this matter. It doesn't sound like it's that simple.
