Based on my knowledge of story structure, drama, tropes, and other similar such things, I will predict with a fair amount of confidence that any death he may appear to suffer at Mirai's hands at this point will not be the last we see of him. As far as I'm concerned his survival isn't really in question at this point. Oh, it's possible that he'll die, but if so they'll find a way to bring him back. The "OMG, is the main character going to die?!!!!1!!1" cliffhanger doesn't really work when you can tell by how the story's built that they're not really going to do it, or at least not at that point.

I doubt he is dying.. I think at least Akihito will be in a coma.

The titles make it sound like they will troll and show 3 different outcomes.
White world he dies but the world is better off Black world he lives but the world burns Grey world he lives but the can gets kicked down the road, our closest to happy ending. |

wow, things are getting really intense.
Anyway, in the LN, what perspective is it in? Aki, Murais or is it just 3rd person? Anyway, I guess Murai is really the MC, thinking back, Aki never seemed to have much screentime or dialogue..

It's sad. If Kyoukai no Kanata had done a better job of engaging viewers earlier on, and had done a better job with its major characters, then Episode 9 would have been truly excellent. In a vacuum, it seems like a key episode in a legitimately very good Shakugan no Shana-esque show. But it's let-down by what came before, causing its emotional notes to not ring as true and clear as they otherwise would.
As is, my feelings are similar to Kanon's. Quote:
But Akihito will likely pull through, of course, so I likewise hope that it has a good explanation, at least. Quote:
By contrast, Izumi seems much more cold and matter-of-fact about this. She seems to think she's in the right here, whereas the antagonist is just acting selfishly, and he knows it. At some level, I respect a sincere straightforward villain over a manipulative trouble-maker who hurts others while acting high-and-mighty.
