Something that really bothers me is when the MC says something and other character says his/her name for example in fate stay night shiro says Saber like 5 times in every episode.

I know that sometimes it's necesary to create some kind of effect to the viewers. Sometimes I do that when something happens to a X character I say the name but my point is that i don't like it in excess.

  • High School Setting
  • Slice of Life (Because appearantly life is bread...)
  • "Fanservice"/Ecchi (uncreative and repetetive ways of causing such "Ecchi moments" as well)
  • masochistic, Male, Main Character with "average grades, average stats, average etc." getting involved with some over the top girls who blame all their own faults on the guy by using violence
  • Love Triangle, "All-Girls-Cast" or Harem (combined with the "average MC" above and a very bad excuse for the girls getting the hots for the MC. Compared to that, the American "Reality shows" almost seem like art)
  • "Moe" for the sake of Moe, but badly written
  • "Trap" for the sake of having a trap
  • etc.

Does this remind you of something? Oh not of "something", but actually of 80% of anime nowadays? Yes, you are not the only one who thinks so!

The "default girl syndrome" that plague most of VN adaptations and the fact that studios don't take enough risks with those adaptations.

You'll just love Inuyasha then. Shiro is like an amateur compared to the MC's of that pile of garbage

1. yes

2. IMO bad presentation can destroy the enjoyment unless you turn your brain off (but then you could just watch a hentai anyway...) The only real excuse I hear is the "modesty" of Japanese people... they should really grow a spine... I mean "bloody nose", just from seeing a panty, or a "cute" character? This may be a cultural thing, but I cannot emphatise with that.

3. Again, only "excuse" is that Japanese are modest... but excessive copy pasting being so successful is still a tragic thing, no matter what excuse...

4. Useless charcter + harem seems to be a way for the readers to "project themselves" into a situation they will NEVER attain in real live, i.e. escapism at its best. But aside from this we also get not just "bad writing", but asolute "garbage writing".

But maybe I am just rexpieriencing a cultural shock...

Well, that is pretty much the same thing happens with Korean drama nowdays. Can't blame them. Entertainment is a harsh industry, and I don't surprise to see more and more studios don't want to risk their lifeline and instead choose to make moderate but safe projects.

I think the issue there is the industry's money-making desires. They're far too susceptible to trends based on hugely popular shows. Character designs especially have become a bit of a problem. After Haruhi aired those character designs started appearing elsewhere. K-On was considerably worse, as those characters were not only appearing elsewhere, but were literally being abused for the specific purpose of getting viewers. Female-cast slice of life is getting shoved down our throats because it sells, apparently.

To that end I had done a small little rant about how I'm tired of seeing certain archetypes rendered in a specific way, but I came to realize that the example I had (serious ojou-same-esque girls with long dark hair, probably tsundere) didn't really work. The more I think of this kind of character, the more I realize that this character is almost always idolized by those around her. I suppose knowing that it's mainly an issue of cultural stereotypes I can't fault it too much, but I really like to see when characters break that mold. That's one of the reasons I love the cast of D-Frag! The girls are mostly ass-kicking delinquents, but they look totally normal (except the Senjougahara character, who gets away with being reminiscent because she is Senjougahara).

Some shows like this were pretty good, but most shows in this genre bores me to death.

It's not so much as the genre's fault as it is of the retarded writers and directors. Same shit every effin' time.

Like Maria Watches Over Us is extremely good, K-On is enjoyable (in small doses), Madoka is too.
So, yeah there are good shows in the genre when the writing and direction isn't shitty and check-listed.

The fans. We're all so disrespectful to one another. We should all be doing the opposite, since a large portion of the world is against anime.

Lack of sex.
Platonic love is nice and all, but "Jesus, **** you two already" way too common.

There's a good reason for that, demographics and all. Doesn't mean I can't complain.

One of the things I'm starting to hate is the kind of elitism where only anime that does something new is good. This can come in two ways.

1) The fans. They only think anime that are outside of the typical anime cliché is good, dismissing typical high school romance anime as bad. I disagree with this sentiment. I find a lot of enjoyment in anime like Sakurasou, which takes something already done before but does it better without the bullshit that makes the genre infamous for being stagnant in the first place.

2) The directors. I keep seeing lots of very weird and unusual anime lately, especially those that try too hard to be something unique and different, at the cost of enjoyment, story flow, and understanding. Come on guys, you don't need to do this. If you don't want to make another high school romcom, fine, but you don't have to totally go the other extreme.

^ Reminds me about a certain article on CNN: "Capitalism is a Zero-sum game". Basically, the world is devided into two "Inventors", who invent and having ideas nourished by public funding. Then, there are "Non-iventor", A.K.A dependence people.

Basically, everything is a gamble. You win, you get a lot of rooms for merchandising, sequel or prequel, and more. You lose, then bankrupt. Also, how much anime has changed since 2000?

Well I am not sure that anime has changed that much although they had changed the way they create anime.

The elements of the list I made above by themselves weren't bad. However most (not all) anime that use too many of these bulletpoints tend to be fundamentally flawed. As you say, even (or rather "escpacially") anime with irregular ways can crash easily, while Highschool rom-com settings can be over average or even quite good sometimes. But using the same setting by itself simply makes it boring at some point, no matter how good the new story is, at some point the repetition of the setting may make you dislike it.

I just want to say that I didn't post as a response to your post in any way (mostly because I didn't read the previous posts lol). I actually, like you, very much dislike many contemporary love triangle high school crap, especially if ecchi harem is involved. But no matter how many times I'm disappointed, I find a good one here and there. So I guess the point is, I keep trying, whereas people just simply dismiss those anime before watching the first episode. (You might even say...because I have such a low expectation of high school setting anime in the first place, I feel especially rewarded when something decent does come up.)
