Sento's hair in later volumes became more and more brunette. Probably because there was other girls in the cast with actual silver hair. So it seems KyoAni just went for the recent designs instead of what she started out as.

I wonder how long these designs will last as their default.
I like gray but Lion brown is cool too.

He is actually suppose to be bishie. But for reasons he doesn't think being admired is a big deal.
There is a bit of Gordon Ramsay in him. At least that's my interpretation from reading his words.

They did diverge from the original design, but only for the guy

What is it you don't like about this character design? It looks good to me, and it doesn't look too moeblobish.

Just as I suspected ^^;
MC became more generic and looks like boy student A from another kyoani show.
Even kyoani is going for fanservice too huh?

And... it looks like a KyoAni show. That's to be expected, they really don't take any risks when it comes to character designs do they?

Kyoani, you just have one job... Now we have Oreki, I wonder if Eru will appear here going yandere on the other girls, ended on a blood bath slaughter in the park.

Saw it miles away coming.

Sigh... whatever.

At least they won't ruin the original character's personality, right? Right!?

The protagonist is the only one who looks anything like a KyoAni character, and IMO he looks more like Yuuta than Oreki, though it's hard to tell from just one shot.
Also, will you people -ever- shut up about them "taking risks"? What is with this studio and the bizarre expectations people have of it?

This isn't the drafts of a first volume from a newbie, but a work that seems to have enough volumes on it and comes from a recognized author. I think we're safe personality-wise.

Wow, I thought my concerns about the designs were petty. Also, I don't mind how Kanie looks because, well, I like Oreki

Kaisos, just to make it clear, "risks" in this case doesn't refer to controversial themes or stylistic/director choices, but the ability to not chicken out on your plot resolution at literally the last second. If you want to know what that means, just watch chuunibyou s1 or kyokai no kanata.

When I said that KyoAni never takes risks I meant it relating to character designs. Personaly I think that they DO take quite a few risks from time to time when it comes to the kinds of shows they adapt (Nichijou and Hyouka comes to mind).

Although, and to be fair, at least these character designs are relatively distinct from the usual KyoAni fare unlike what happened with Tamako Market (for instance) where some characters seemed copy pasted from K-On sadly.

People are going off

But idk why they are so surprised, it's not like you can get much originality in the 21st century for anime.......... There's only so much you can do to fit in with the current trends..

Let's bring the generic KyoAni discussion and criticism to the appropriate thread and keep this thread on topic.

Oh wait. Never mind.

I certainly have no problem with Sento reminding me of Shinka.

Are we really going to go through this phase where people complain about character designs in every KyoAni show?

The light novel's designs aren't anything to write home about, and these aren't Horiguchi's sameface K-On designs either.

Like, to my eyes these don't look anything like KyoAni's other shows. Like I said, I would definitely have much preferred Nishiya's Hyouka designs to these, they're just... way too generic.

Because Tamaket and K-On have the same character designer?

Yes, I'm aware of that. But just because you use the same character designer doesn't mean that he/she has to design characters that almost look like a palette swap (Example: Midori looks just like Mio dyed and cut her hair).

You can have visually distinct designs while still retaining an overall look that's recognizable and I think that's what's happening here with the Amagi Brilliant Park designs.

Horiguchi is a woman, and yes, her tendency to reuse facial designs is something that has been commented on ad nauseam.
That doesn't mean that Horiguchi's work is the "usual KyoAni fare" (there's a wonderful image that I'm sure we've all seen proving just that) or that Horiguchi's designs are, themselves, bad.

I'll put it to you that if you took the guy out of the shot, you wouldn't be able to tell that this was a KyoAni show at all.

Personally, I think the character designs actually look kind of generic (mostly because of the eyes). Like, they aren't the absolute worse thing ever. But at the same time... eh. The look is sort of like something I would expect for a low-budget comedy or something. At least the clothing seems very detailed and the hair is nice.

Maybe it will look a lot better in motion. Maybe.

Maybe it's the eyes but I'm reminded of Kanon/Clannad, maybe my memory is failing me but the "eyebrows over hair" feature is something that's been out of fashion lately, makes me think of the mid 2000s
