Yeah, it was just shoved in there without much thought to get a reaction, to let audiences know "yo, this is serious business".
I think bringing Ange off her pedestal should've been a slower process and less exploitative. Like "if you don't take the examination, we aren't gonna let you eat", or "we're gonna throw you outside and let you fend for yourself" or simply mistreat Ange (non-sexually) and slowly break her spirit until she realises she's no longer special and relents to the examination. Maybe even good-cop-bad-cop, one's being nasty while one's trying to nicely coax Ange and say she's gonna be piloting a mecha for a good cause or something lol. Though, I doubt they'd want to take things slow due to time constraints/just wanting to establish the setting quickly. Also, I was surprised at how the hatred of Normas allowed the Prince to pretty much take over like that. |

I enjoyed the episode. The ending has clearly polarized the community, but before that...
A fairly compelling setting by introducing this society that outwardly seemed beautiful and perfect, evidently hiding the peace created by these outcasts. The princess is a seemingly perfect representative of this society: beautiful, pure, covering up a veneer of hatred and inhumanity toward the desperate pleas of a mother. Her introduction to this more cruel world is portrayed in a terrible fashion. She is stripped of her previous life, her innocence - both literally and figuratively. In the end we see her laying on the floor in a fetal position with the blood of her mother stained on the tattered remains of the clothing - symbolic of being reborn in this new world while also seeing the visceral remains of her tattered purity. Now, as for the scene itself - I admit that it was carried out poorly. The art direction here did not convey the appropriate message for what I think the intent was. This scene required far more tact than was delivered, however I am hesitant to brand the entire series as a result of poor direction. I think there is some potential here. |

Just finished watching it, and...I don't see how this is exploitative or titillating. Okay, maybe titillating for those who get their rocks off on seeing someone pinned down on a table and struggling with that camera angle, but that's not what I took away from it. What I did take away from it is that, in Ange's position, it's a humiliating and degrading thing to be subjected to after having everything but her life taken away from her. While a big shock to the system, I think this presents an opportunity for her to rebuild herself (but not without a lot of difficulty, given the negative chemistry going on in the next episode's preview).
I think the episode's pacing could've been slower and establish Ange's fall further with another episode, but I figure the show wants to establish things right away before moving on to the crux of the plot: the dragons. (And where there are dragons, there are Warcraft references to be made. Huzzah!) Overall, I liked it. This has potential, and I'm interested to see where this goes. |

I was considering of giving this series a watch, but with all this rape talk (and inconsistency of whether or not it was rape or surgery or cavity searching or whatever) I am having second thoughts. It is a shame because I am a fan of Dendoh and CE Gundam. Plus I really don't want to be pulling a "it was not rape" card like I do with Saki in VVV.Seriously, I do not like to be that guy.

Anyway, I wouldn't really call Ange a "monster" because of what happened with that mother and child. It's more that she's just so sheltered not only from having been raised in royalty, but also extra protection because of her parents wanting to hide her own "Norma" self (which seems to just be "normal" humans with no mana capabilities). She still seemed a little conflicted, which is why she was shown out on the balcony in the next bit. Now she's going to have to learn first-hand what it's like to live in the shoes of a Norma, who are seen as not even human in this world. It's easy to ignore a real problem if it's not personally affecting oneself. Ignorance is bliss after all. One may hear about problems, but unless they directly negatively affect that person, chances of them doing much about it is slim.

This is your calling Sunrise! More stuff like this & Valvrave & less Buddy Complex,'mkay? This won't be my favorite fall anime but the discussions surrounding it will probably be the most fun to see |
