I just don't know what to say. Mawaru Penguindrum is probably in my top ten of all time favourite anime so I was more than willing to give this a chance. But that premiere was just flat out awful. Never before have I taken an immediate and intense dislike to such sickeningly infantile cutesy characters like these since probably Little Busters (and even that was nowhere near this level). When that brick was flying in the air, I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one wishing it would hit one of girls in the head and kill them in the middle of their dainty little laughs. And the yuri just felt like pandering trash masquerading as art.
I'll give it one more episode just because it's Ikuhara but that was simply not the best first impressions.

It's really interesting. Putting aside the silliness of the presentation, there's seem to be some sort of social commentary going on here.
First thing that stood out to me was the school's general encouragement to have friends and blend in (conform to the norm?) and the contrast with Sumika's fear that her relationship with Kureha would be found out. Her school is big on friendship but she feared for her relationship. So friendship is okay but whatever Sumika had with Kureha (romance?) was not. Sumika and Kureha were aware that keeping their relationship was a risk and were afraid, but they decided not to give up on love despite the danger. And Sumika paid for it. But who attacked Sumika? The bears? The visual evidence seems to suggest they did it, but I don't think so because the bears are in a similar position as that of Sumika and Kureha. They too are given two choices: to give up and become invisible or choose love even if it's considered a "sin." I think there could be some misdirection going on in the last scene. They're trying to make us think the bears attacked Sumika, but I doubt it's true. But, if the bears didn't attack her, who did? The other suspect is the "storm." The way the school president talked about it, it seems the storm is a prevalent occurrence in their society, like something that it's always there, lurking in the shadows, so I don't think the storm refers to the bears. But what is the storm then? Well, that's when we go back to the school's insistence for students to blend in, to conform (to become invisible?). Whatever the storm is, it's something that happens when you go against the norm, when you stand out! Maybe the series is trying explore society's tendency to force the individual to conform, and how it shuns whoever does not. I guess that's why Ikuhara is using yuri (homosexuality?) as a subject.

........what the fuck did I just watch?
1. Intellectual fantasy about homosexuality? I took it that the flowers symbolize innocence/innocence lost. The bears want to 'eat' the MC. 2. I'll give it another episode or two to see if there's an actual plot other than the symbolism and the two bears going'GAO KUMA' At least Utena and Penguindrum had a plot underneath the awesome animation. 3. Bless Sawabe Junichi for winding up in roles where he comes across as over the top. 'SHABADOU' Overall, this is a hot mess. At least the bears are cute and I liked the music. The animation was definitely the best thing about this show. Pigtail Bear is a horny little thing... At least I got thru this compared to the stupid magical boys show

Ikuhara is, like, one of my favorite people ever. Well, as far as anime goes, at least. He could literally make a show about a race of overly horny pancakes drenching Pluto in maple syrup and eating it, and I'd watch the heck out of it.
So yeah, it's no surprise I'm perfectly in love with... whatever this is, I'm not too sure yet. It's gorgeous, it's insane and it's probably deeper than it looks. I'm not even going to question what's going on at this point... but I'm excited to see where he's going with this. Am I the only one who liked the first two episodes?

A nice playful episode that mainly reinforced some of the ideas generated in episode one. It seems clearer now that it is simply toying with the premise in favor of the themes and character - a severance of base narrative, so to speak. Definitely a keeper.

I really liked the first episode, yes it's pretty strange but all of Ikuhara's works are. It gets even better in the second episode. I guess I'm one of the few who is liking it so far and enjoying the overly yuri. To me a lot of the yuri series could be better and so far this one is really impressing me.
It makes me very sad how all I see when I look this up is mostly hate.

The bear court seems a bit more confusing than in episode 1, since the transfer student bears aren't even there when the court appeared this season. I wonder if it's some internal transformation for Kureha instead, and the two transfer bears are actually closely related to her in some form or another.

So the Kaichou was the one who eat Sumika and Lulu and Ginko weren't involved then, right? I didn't quite grasp... that part very well. Oh, and loved the Kaichou here.
Weird episode, but entertaining nonetheless. I hope there's a special relation between Kureha and the bears, besides her being Delicious Smell. |

Wait, I thought the Kaichou was shocked, in the ending of the last episode that Lulu and Ginko were engaged in eating humans and were bears? Or was this a red herring, and what she was actually shocked, was that the Court actually approved Lulu and Ginko's passage past the walls of severance, when they couldn't seem to control their urges?
Also, since the Kaichou shot her fellow bear (with a human weapon meant to kill bears ,no less), this has turned from predation, to murder. Is the author trying to make a point that if one has no qualms preying on intelligent beings, arguably, one should have no qualm on murdering another member of your species? Kaichou eating Sumika actually makes sense. She was in the way, so murdering your romantic rival to Kureha's affections was the way to go. But was it Kaichou, or was it the newly transferred bears who did the deed? Or was it that fourth bear who was shot dead this episode, who did the bloody deed? |

Can't explain it, but I liked the second episode. It entertained me. (Still can't get over how good the music is.) Aoi Yuuki's portrayal of Mitsuki is something I particularly enjoyed.
As for when we saw Mitsuki 'watching Ginko and Lulu eat Sumika'... I'm not sure what to make of that. Maybe she ate the leftovers? Or maybe she actually started eating Sumika first and left to go do something, only to come back and find Ginko and Lulu eating the leftovers? No idea. Spoiler for Possible spoilers?:
