Ghost in the Shell: Arise (TV) [Anticipation]

Got news that GITS Arise will have a TV show in Japan this Spring. Not enough info to determine if it's a recut on the OVAs or what, but Production IG is going to be involved.

Ghost in the Shell Arise TV Anime Announced for Spring

This info was released as part of the 25th anniversary of the franchise's establishment.

Likely a recut with additional episodes. There's 4 ovas confirmed at 55-60 minutes each so that would cover maybe 8 episodes. So they'll add more stuff and likely add one more story are to bring it up to 12-13 episodes (1 cour).

Personally I'm kind of in two extremes about Arise. On the one hand I like the fresh take and 'younger' approach to Motoko (EG being more liable to make mistakes and wrong judgements that she might not be able to handle as opposed to the older version). On the other hand it doesn't feel to me nearly as well-written as the original movie or GiTS:SAC.

It's likely going to be a case of Break Blade where they will add some additional content or worse, Psycho Pass edit version. Not sure what I think of this yet as I'm not a big fan of Arise but we'll see.

Not sure what you mean, I guess you're expecting 1-hour long-style episodes in Arise's TV version if it happens then?

Well, until they announce the actual content, my guess is that we won't be getting a brand new series but rather a TV show adapting the previously aired Arise with additional content.

Psycho Pass Edit had some minor additions from what I've read (haven't seen it though, only heard from some people). And basically, I don't think it will be 1 hour long but trimmed down a bit into standard 24 minute per episode style.

All these OVA/Movie series seem to be getting shown on tv later these days.... Break Blade, Katanagatari, Yamato etc...

When's Marvel? Unicorn? We'll be seeing a Code Geass Akito TV thread in here in 2016 or whatever.

Katanagatari was a TV-series from the start. Just with non-standart airing schedule.

So this is it, Ghost in the Shell ARISE ALTERNATIVE ARCHITECTURE. Best as I can tell, it's a re-edit of the ARISE movies with two new episodes to bridge the gap between Arise and the upcoming new movie later this year.

Teaser video, for what it's worth:

Normally I'd like the fresh take on the franchise, but the writing really let the OVAs down. Really really down. :/ Motoko and even Batou were out of character more often than not (and it's not a case of the characters being younger - it's things like Motoko blowing up at Togusa and berating him for being just a human, and Batou standing there and saying nothing, to say nothing of the penultimate ep with the romance that was just really weird and not in a good way, etc.), and frankly the stories were very predictable and not very interesting. I think the first episode was the best and it was downhill from there.

So I'm not very excited about an Arise series... unless they fire the writers and get better people, more attuned to GITS.

Isn’t it normal for adults/mature people and those who have more experience to behave differently from their younger selves? We don’t even know how far in the past Arise is set before GITS.

Also, I read somewhere that Arise is supposed to be a Re-imagining. Well, if it’s indeed a re-imagining, then I supose anything goes, and the argument that some characters are acting out-of-character is moot (hell, they can even change Motoko into a guy if it’s a re-imagining).

As for me, I enjoy Arise’s plot as much as I enjoy the plot in the movies & GITS. I’m not a fan of Motoko’s new look though. Still think her GITS-self as the best.

As I said, it's not that, it's that Motoko is shown as having fundamentally different values than she does in her other incarnations, with no good explanation at all. No Motoko should be the kind who goes on a rant like Arise!Motoko did against Togusa. (And for that matter no Batou should be the kind who just stands there and listens to it without saying a word...)

Or the kind who doesn't even background check her lovers despite her job and affiliations being what they are. (Or the kind who is surprised and impressed when she learns that old people can look young in cyborg bodies... I mean wouldn't she know best?) Actually that part was extra confusing because even Arise doesn't make clear how old she actually is...

It's a re-imagining like how the Oshii movies or even GITS:SAC is a re-imagining of the manga.

Well, people's values can change depends on what they have gone through. And we don't know every detail of Motoko and Batou's life from ARISE to SAC do we? (that is, if Arise is indeed the prequel to SAC)

Yes, so? A re-imagining doesn’t have to follow any rules outside of the very basic premise. Sherlock Holmes and his pals got different incarnations in various TV series, movies, and cartoons. In one incarnation, he’s a perfect gentleman who values human lives in general, in another, he’s a grating sociopath who jumps in excitement on receiving a difficult case of child-kidnapping, abuse and attempted murder (he doesn’t really care about the kids as much as solving the problem because it keeps him from being bored). Still, both personalities are exciting to watch because the stories themselves are good. So what if Arise-Motoko is a bit slow or careless or more lively than what we usually get in GITS & SAC? There’s no “out-of-character” when it comes to a re-imagining.

Anyway, I still have fun with the franchise so far. And probably will too when Scarlet Johanson plays the live-action Motoko (or whatever name they decided to give her) as long as the movie itself is good.

Wow, am I the only one who loved Arise? I'd be game for a look into Motoko's past and why Section 9 got created. I wish there was more!

I looked at it as an AU version; Saakamoto as Motoko was all right, but TV Motoko, especially Mary McGlynn, and Origa's theme is iconic to me.

The first two OVAs were okay, but I loved the last two OVAs.

I just want to see if the TV version will give more details in Aramaki's head when he decided to form the unit.

Do I have to watch the film and all previous Ghost in the Shell animes before I watch this?
