But other than that, like the manga, the anime so far also feels like an epic shounen sword & sorcery adventure, which would be OK, except Arslan senki is an "epic shounen sword & sorcery adventure" as much as LoGH is a space opera. And the Arakawa mannerisms and sense of humor just don't align with the novel's style so I'm not looking forward to seeing them in the anime as well... But the cast is really good, so for their sake I continue to hope for the best. |

That may be your point of view, for others it may be the exact opposite or at least less of a negative point of view.
I prefer to see how things may fare before starting to throw bombs everywhere. Expectations are simply that... |

Well yes, it's my opinion, I didn't say anyone had to share it...
Knowing what I know I have an idea as to what to expect and I know where I stand on that, especially since, as I said earlier, my main issue with this anime is something I don't see changing in the show. But I still hope for the best from the part where the story moves beyond the manga and into novel territory. |

The art style fits her writing. Its certainly not as adult as the original adaptation, but I dont think its so off the mark either. Its just one interpretation of what the characters might look like - and their designs are fitting, imo. Its got an appeal for younger audiences as well, that is my impression, - who might otherwise be turned off by more realistic character designs. As for complaints about the 1st chapter of the manga, if you raed Arakawas interview in the English retail volumes with Yoshiki Tanaka, you can see he approved of it, and she thought it was necessary to establish the setting a bit before dropping the reader directly into a political conflict. This is standard fare for manga anyway.

Either way, still very curious to see how this turns out. Especially when compared to the OVAs I stumbled upon at Hollywood Video when I was a tiny kid. And funnily enough I never knew there was a manga adaptation by Arakawa either so definitely need to take a look now.

Well, people keep going "it'll be OK, it's Arakawa!" and we're running out of ways to say that Arakawa is kind of the problem.
(Again, I've nothing against her. It's just that she's completely wrong for Arslan.) And snark or not, JKL is completely right that Arakawa fans will (do, actually) most likely love it. Which is another "symptom", kind of - you kind of have to be a fan of Arakawa or her style of writing to really enjoy this new Arslan, which is really annoying to some of us. Her writing... Quote:

Well it's true is it not? It's a safe bet that people who like Arakawa are guaranteed to like the Arakawa-esque elements of this particular adaptation.
If the shoe was on the other foot and a beloved franchise was being adapted by someone you didn't have an appreciation for like say, SHAFT, Mari Okada, Shinbo Akiyuki etc, I'm certain your words would be less than complimentary also. Last edited by JKL; 2015-04-04 at 20:22. |

So it may really come from that Chap01 that kuromitsu so much seemed to see as unnecessary, I guess?

Arslan's face looks very much like Edward Elric's from FMA.
That's pretty much the only reason I decided to check it out. Lots of characters.. Prince Arslan is totally nothing like his father. The other kid was more interesting then Arslan. They do make a good duo though.. Will give this a few more episodes.
