Oh my god, Ufotable is doing it again. I didn't get used to this type of drawing at first (heck I even thought it was just flashback type of drawing) but soon I realized this is not bad at all as it resembles 3D the more you watch it.
The first half of episode 1 is so so. Nothing impressive, merely introduction of the world. The second episode is quite well done in introducing the first team and what new-types are capable of doing. Last edited by MagicaLideaL; 2015-07-14 at 00:10. |

Looks quite nice and the action is solid, plus there is enough room for further improvement when they duke it out against the bigger Aragami.
Lenka addition is also welcome, it is nice to see him interact and talk with all those known characters from the game. Basically injecting personality to the voiceless GE member created by the player. And the OP quickly became one of the favorites this season. |

Reading discussion on the net on God Eaters is cancerous. Many people can't recognise that characters are hand drawn with CGI filters that make shading. Monsters are full CGI, tough.
Anyway boring episode. Not even Ufotable can't make good anime from video game, I expect another Devil Survivor 2 (which I dropped halfway) but with better animation and artstyle. MC is typical "hater of main threat" but complaining about undeveloped protagonist at first episode is sign being new.

Don't expect too little, the game's plot is very good (especially if you consider the way the game is made; a mission hub, a terminal and a lab...and the stages where you hunt monsters till you're satisfied). I expect a lot - if not all - of the game characters to make an appearance and maybe even get a bit more into each one's background, but even if it sticks to the plot core, it should still be enough for...9-10 episodes. Add some padding and you got yourself a cour!
P.S: The OP is starting to grow on me. |

It doesn't matter if the original game has a good plot or a large cast to begin with. Depending of people responsible for the directing, storyboard and script, the narrative quality range can go between a masterpiece into a very crappy result.
Whereas Ufotable got a very good reputation with their typemoon adapations, people are quick to forget the atrocious adaptation they have done for Tales of Symphonia. Granted, ToS plot wasn't really memorable by any means, but they managed to turn many poignant scenes into bland talking heads scenes and whatnot. They also did a good job when it comes to tedious pacing and fucked up action scenes. In general, I'm quite cautious when it comes to game adapted into anime series. Successful adaptations are the exceptions, not the norm.

I had forgotten about Tales of Symphonia, and did not know ufotable did that series. I dropped it after two eps and did not look into it much because of that. Hmm. For me the first ep did not work very well here, but this kind of story does not really work very well for me to begin with. Even so, perhaps it will show more promise in future eps?

Episode 1
God Eater is a fantastic promo for what is surely a great video game, because adaptations of video games tend to suck in their own right and just make you want to play the game instead. Kudos to ufotable if they wanted us to play the game, but if not, then we have a problem. In some kinda walled city in a futuristic-but-not-really-setting, the citizens are under threat from Digimon rejects. They instill about as much fear as mooks from a children's cartoon would anyway, as the basic angles, underwhelming SFX, and understated musical score don't make for very threatening creatures. Walled off city being under siege by monsters? I'd rather rewatch Attack on Titan. The Titans were threatening, and although the characters were basic, there was a straightforward attitude in the show's narrative to grant it a lot of energy. God Eater is dishonest. It has basic characters, but it also wants to be 'subtle' but instead comes across as 'nothing.' It spends most of the episode on Renka but his personality is non-existent, while flashback attempts at a backstory flash by so quickly they make Gunzou's background from Arpeggio look biographical. To top it all off, there's not even a sense that Renka is going through a trial by fire. The pacing in his training scenes is disgustingly fast and somehow lacks focus on him. It makes him acquiring his God Arc uneventful instead of 'yes! I got my weapon!' Ibuki from Chaos Dragon brings more urgency than this. I would call that show less offensive because it's a victim of trying to do too many things at once. But God Eater has the worse crime of trying to do too little for the illusion of depth when it absolutely failed to dive past the damn surface in the first place. But hey, it makes more sense than Aquarion Logos. Score one for God Eater!
