Uhh, momonga is versatile while Tatsuya is pretty much a one-trick pony in what abilities they have. Not to mention the stories are fundamentally different. Of course you would treat them as two different things. The way they have limited emotions is also different. The comparison is rather dumb...
Ep 3 was really fun to watch. Enjoyed it a lot. If this is the direction the show is taking with Ainz starting to be the bad guy, then I'm fine with this. |

momoga can still hold the memories of what triggered the emotion, he just can't keep up that emotion. his inner deep still want be human but the "magic" is more like "keep holding at check his humanity. tatsuya see his sister half naked or any girl he don't have any reaction or if get that memory will be erased, now ig momoga seeying albedo naked and he get deep horn then the magic will calm him down and he not forget it, the magic just keep him at check he will still able to be "happy to see her naked and never forget it he just never gonna be "excited enough" to be true pleasured by it.

Differences in premises aside, at least with Monmon we understand why he's a powerhouse. He goes from playing a game to being said game's avatar with all said powers. The world's not out to make things easy for him, indeed it barely knows he exists.

Comparing Momonga to Tatsuya has some ground though. Both of these shows are power fantasies, most contemporary isekai stories I've watched are like that, even Gate who people say it's deconstructing the genre (I don't think it is). They both work on the same principle of what I like to call "surprise treasure chest." You don't really know what badass magic they pull out next. Momonga is teasing us with the mimimum of 9 tiers of magic, while Tatsuya pulled out one ridiculous spell after another. Even world building is subjugated to this. Everything about their world, the magic systems are a mystery. This is why I kind of like these stories, even though they are at the core power fantasies, because it's not just about which character is more badass and more OP, it's explaining the systems that's attractive to me.
Mahouka anime had weird pacing issues, I think it mostly came to the adaptation being bad that we don't think of the show in a positive light. Overlord doesn't have that. So far I've been super impressed with everything, character and world building. But there are comparison points between the two, even if one end-product is better than the other. |

I agree with others, that I can relate and enjoy this power fantasy tale more than Mahouka though for different reasons potentially.
Overlord is something that, as a tired 30 year old gamer, I understand. He spent years in an MMO, building up his character. Immediately I can relate Momonga to a Level 90 mage decked out in heroic warforged gear going back through old world content - soloing old raids. It's almost nostalgic from this angle alone, and even though we don't see it in the anime itself, we understand that through time and effort he's earned this. Contrary to what Mahouka comes across as, where he's just gifted with all these powers, intellect, and love. Furthermore, he did not descend into immediate bad-ass brooding mode. His interior dialogue makes him relatable. He's being cautious until he understands the new rules of this "game". In many ways, he's just on a RP-PVP server now. He's roleplaying, though it's clear that is likely also due to the body change itself starting to influence his thinking. |

PS. Yea, I would lump gate into that category as well.

At the moment the reason why I like Overlord over the usual "power fantasy" shows is that this at least seems to pose a strategical challenge rather than a physical one. Whereas Momonga is probably as powerful as Tatsuya, his challenges at the moment seem to be focused about getting a grasp of this world and how it works. Also the fact that he's sort of cast into this "evil" role is interesting. Bad guys are overpowered all the time, but we never see them rise to power, only be defeated at the end. In this sense this could read as "the other side" of a typical fantasy story.
Mahouka on the other hand sounded like Harry Potter as written by Ayn Rand.

I think your best criterion is: everything that hasn't been explicitly said in the anime is spoiler. Even if it's a monologue that happened at the beginning of Vol. 1 and the anime has likely skipped it altogether, you can't rule out the possibility they are just saving the content for later, or simply withholding it for the purpose of packing more surprise with some future event. So if we respect the judgement of the anime's creators, anything they left out is to be considered potentially spoiler-ish. At least that's how I feel as an anime-only viewer.

Episode 4:
Mm, so I guess our skeleton MC should be referred to as Ains now by the development of this week's episode. The action is nice imo with the angels although parts of it felt fast. I felt somewhat bad for Gazef though for almost getting destroyed by the angels. Too bad he wasn't lying about Ains when he mentioned that there's someone else stronger than him. And lol, I spotted a yandere Albedo this episode yet again

Hmm... the episode didn't mention
Spoiler for Novel Content that was omitted by the anime:
But it doesn't matter much, since in this season it won't become relevant anyway, don't know about after that as I haven't read further than vol. 3 Still great episode, great adaption. Since the producers don't try to broaden the target audience when compared to the source (unlike GATE), they can adapt it directly, which is great. Can't wait for the next episode.
