Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that. I have seen characters featured in volume covers that were eventually killed in the story. Personally, I believe that Vritra will be killed while trying to protect the MCs from the ninth calamity and her Authority will be inherited by Kili.

Also it seems that darkness will indeed possess Mitsuki, was it really necessary? Was there any need to make Mitsuki the ninth calamity?
This really demotivates me from looking forward to the next volume

Actually, it's probably the other way around. Vritra implied at the end of Volume 10 that Yuu's desire to protect Mitsuki came from his instincts as a Counterdragon since Mitsuki hosts the ninth calamity, which means that his feelings towards her are not geniuine.
